Advice on consistency/slowing down

I too do everything faster than most......When I was a kid my Mom used to tell me to slow down and taste my food.....you know the story.

This is my first session of league and my problem is more nerves/adrenalin.....I can see the out I get excited the adrenalin starts running and I miss the easy shot in the run and lose the game.....Of course I'm a much lower rated player than you but a guy on my team told me that when I felt that racey feeling to stand up and walk around the table.... look at things... and then set up and take the shot...
My point is if you can feel yourself speeding up....maybe you're not chalking up between shots as much as you would when you're on pace...whatever it is that clues you in.....Take an extra lap around the table see if it helps....
It has helped me and I'm going to need it tonight because last week I was to be the last shooter and the other team had to forfeit or exceed the 23 rule. Right now I've got the adrenalin going in anticipation of the match....I got a feeling I'm going to be lapping the table tonight.....if I get to shoot...

I'd be interested to hear how you solve the problem....good luck

The best thing you can do is this, and trust me it's not easy to truly understand, let alone do. Shoot one shot at a time.....

I don't mean to not plan out shape or multiple shots or even the whole table, but do it before you get down.....

When you're down on the shot, only shoot THAT shot, only think about that shot. Be aware of what English you're putting on the CB but don't think about where you need to get to for the next shot, you will already have done that while standing up, ONLY concentrate on making the ball in front of you once you get down on the shot....

If you can do this, it will eliminate a lot of your inconsistency that's due to your rushing for the run.....

Last Night at the League Match

Well I wish I could say I'm now 5-1 but I lost my match last night......and I mean I lost it...

First game i lose the lag the other guy breaks and scratches I decide on a ball set and put several in...I couldn't get out so I lined up on a low % shot with a defensive leave in mind ..... the other guy (SL4) pockets a couple and it's my turn. I run my last couple out and get poor shape on the 8. I shoot it and miss and the other guy gets down to one left on the table...I line up for the second attenpt on the 8 which is pinched against the rail about 2 diamonds from the corner.....a shot I make 70% of the time.....and it drifted hit the tit and parked in the jaws.
Needless to say I was one down. I won the second game, was totally outclassed on the third....and in the final game I felt like I was in the thick of it and it was mine for the taking .... needless to say I walked away from the match feeling like I beat myself........which is usually the case.

I'll tell you as soon as I figure out how to stop beating myself......I'll be able to start beating those that deserve to eat a little crow...... Being a 42 yr old beginner draws more than it's share of snide remarks.....

This will never get old, will it Willie. I can see your grandchildren rolling their eyes as Grampabetmore tells the story again :D

Since I learned how to spell rhythym for this thread, I'll use it again. Rhythym need not be slow, nor should it be too fast, I understand Mr. Fels all too well. Playing at a consistant pace, preferably one that does not cause the Betmore Basement Bums to become belligerant, seems to be very important to achieving consistant results. Given the choice between a slightly faster setup/stroke and a slower setup/stroke, I would favor the quicker approach, only to limit the time available for doubt to creap into my mind.

:D

Your point is well taken, though. My rhythm is too quick. I need to slow it down a bit.

One thought I had was to go and get a cheap wristwatch that had some sort of stopwatch function on it - specifically, something akin to a chess clock - where I can tap a button when I walk up to the table, and have it set for, say, 10 seconds - and I simply do not allow myself to take the shot (or even maybe, go down for a shot) before it beeps. Make myself use that time to look at the table, ponder patterns, etc. Once I've shot, tap the button and restart the timer. I need something... external to make me slow down, I think - I keep reverting when I try and do it myself, consciously.

(Edit: My copy of Capelle's "Play Your Best Pool" just rolled in a little while ago, so maybe that'll help too :D)

Dave,
This belligerence of the Betmore Basement "Bums" that you bandy about is barely believeable. Bellicosity is bad, but bantering is beautiful.

P.S. - I'll bet breakup is rolling his good eye already, a few hundred more references on my part will just about do the trick.

P.P.S. - I think of the AZB forum as a foot, and breakup is the big toe.

P.P.P.S. - If you touch my stuff, I'll kill you. If you call me Francis, I'll kill you.

Are you dogging shots and losing games that you shouldn't?

Have you tried everything?... and nothing seems to work?

Do you have a friend that you can trust? Invest in this remote-operated shock collar and let your friend train you to stroke straight, stay down and follow through on every shot. NEVER miss another shot.

Cost: $99.99. Range: 100 yards.

Oh My God that is the funniest thing I have read in a while!

Set the sucker to ten and I guarentee you will learn quickly. It worked for my dog (we only had it set to 3 for the dog). Now she will only leave the property if shes not wearing the collar.

I think George Fels said in his book “Mastering Pool” something to the effect.

-if you play slow you will miss a hard shot

-if you play fast you will miss an easy one

Holds pretty true for me.

Sounds like a platitude to me. Or one of those things writers write to get humble folk to think writers are profound.

Games are NOT mostly won by someone making a hard shot. Games are mostly LOST by someone missing an easy shot or position.
Pace, rythym, and focus are elements of the game are not only necessary for making difficult shots, but they are also necessary for making EASY shots!

I agree, in fact I think they are more necessary for making easy shots.

Cheers,
