advice on short angle shots

do you have some advice on playing short angle shots? Some player said to me to play this kind of shots without any english, they should be quite easy shots but looks like I miss these types of shots very often.

The rule of thumb is to avoid using english whenever you can. The reason is that on short angles (i.e., approaching the rail almost perpendicularly) the rebound angle is especially sensitive to the amount of spin.

However, sometimes it really can't be avoided. The shot in the diagram is probably easier using some running english (off either ball) since the initial angle isn't really that short.

One thing to consider is that you may want to drive the first object ball to a specific place for position. That will require more or less spin on the cue ball as you go for a thinner or thicker hit on the first object ball.

My only additional advice would be to not be too systemie. These small table shots are feel oriented. If you have a table cover or a rake.....block the rest of the table....and go to school on these shots as practice drills. When you get to a certain level they are almost inexcusable to miss.

Hi, im going to give my approach to the shot, which diagramed by Bob, and maybe we all can learn something. This types of shots come up a lot and like Steve said they are played mostly by FEEL. Feel free to add comment or other solutions.

Assuming table and balls are cleaned and in good condition because it's very important. Of course the goal here is to have the cueball arrived at the third, long rail with as much english as possible to have better chance of making the carom.

First option: About 5/8 hit on the left of red ball with 3.5 tips of 9:30 clock english. Adjust your speed so that cueball arrive slowly at third rail with much english. When you practice on the table, you will see the shot better and that will help make adjustment.

Alternate option: Jim Shovak's short angle system work fine as well.

I think that short angle shots are very different; some shots can be play with no english and others are played with more or even maximum english. Sometimes its very easy and sometimes its hard.
