A guy brought in a cue the other day and said , well it played like sh...t. He thought a new Kamui tip was the remedy. I told him Id get to it the next day and he could pick it up in the afternoon. Anyway I opened his case and to my suprise it looked like a Southwest cue. put it together and thought the joint fit was a bit off and thought the quality at Southwest was slippin a bit but after further check the cue was a China knockoff. The shaft thread had been tapped with a dull tap leaving tears in the wood. The shaft quality was maybe a B grade on a good day but the real stickler was after I popped the tip off I noticed the ferrule was way offset. I mean it has less than a 1/32 of ferrule material on one side and about 3/16 on the other. Ive never seen such poor workmanship. I dont think this cue could hit right with any tip. I called the fellow and told him it was not a Southwest cue. Ive had 2 myself so it easy to see especially with this piece of junk. He said he paid 350.00 for the cue. I told him that should have been a red flag. I must say the builders did well with the points but the heart of the cue was a cue builders nightmare. He asked me to build a new shaft for the cue and I agreed after showing him the ferrule. I swear the Chinese can dam near clone anything.

Don't be surprised if the points are stickers..
 
That is the type of offset I have seen in replacing ferrules out here. They must be made somewhere in Asia where getting it out the door is a higher priority over making it right.

Imagine dull cutters pushing that tenon while taking huge plunge
cuts.
I believe in 4-flute 1 1/4 LOC carbide end mill on a router
more and more these days.
 
I cut apart an import and there was a metal rod running the entire length of the cue. It started halfway up the tenon for the butt sleeve and ran up to about 2 inches below the joint pin. The threaded rod wasnt a tight fit either, explained why he said the cue vibrated a lot.

That's like one of those #2 pencils (the classic wood-encasing-graphite-rod type) where the graphite rod was installed off-center, and when you sharpen the pencil, you get this point of solid wood with graphite on one side.

Many times ferrules are threaded on all the way through and it makes it look like the tenon is off center. But I have seen tenons off that much too, so not much surprises me anymore.

i had a customer bring his meucci cue in that had snapped at the a joint, the pin was about 3/4 off from center.
