After hours Gratuity.

Think that is a GREAT SYSTEM, as ALL PARTIES know what is expected, or CHARGED, or to BE PIAD before asking for After Hours Operation of the Pool Room.....;)
 
Back when I managed "Mother's"...we had a pro event in town. Late that night the room was still packed with pros & onlookers. We closed at 2am. I let a group of 5 or 6 pros stay and continue a ring game while I closed up & did paperwork. At 3am I'm ready to go...they were playing like $40 on the 5 & $100 on the 9...six handed...you could get fat fast. They asked to stay late so I locked them in & allowed it. I asked for nothing & even left them off the clock. 6am they were ready to split...3 of them gave me a crisp $100 each...the other 3 offered $20 each. $360 for an extra 3 hours...I felt that was superb. Allen Hopkins is one of the best tippers I've ever seen in my life...quite a gentleman too..true old school.
Any time after that when I was asked to stay open for action...I just requested $100 per hour...to be paid by the winner...or split if they broke even. No one had an issue with that...if they did then they weren't betting enough to warrant me staying. After hours I never charged tabled time due to I had to close out the computer & cash drawer. All money then went into my pocket...:D

I have even tipped the staff when I was loser because the winner didn't. I take good care of the staff where I play, and they take even better care of me.

$10 an hour to work till 6:30 am is a very fair compensation if you are working in a Chinese prison camp:rolleyes: . In order for many places to BREAK EVEN you have to shell out $30/ hour or more. Some places you are asking a business to risk their business license to accomodate you:( . The last time I stayed open for a customer playing for $500....you know what he considered " a great tip worth waiting for" ...It was $3 for staying 1 hour and 20 minutes late. Needless to say....He was never allowed to play after hours again. :mad:

$50/ hour is fair compensation for renting an entire room for your personal use. Unless of course its in a nice neighborhood. Then $100/hour would be more reasonable.

If you think that is expensive...chances are high you have never owned a business...unless it was in 1972.

C'mon guys......there's a reason everyone makes fun of pool players. Half the time they earn it. Lets move ahead a few decades in our behavior, courtesy, manners and expectations of businesses and their employees.

Some folks think TIPPING is a City in China.

I was suprized nobody asked the obvious question......

Was there a TIP Jar on the counter??? If not how is one supposed to know a tip is expected???.....:rolleyes:

Seriously 10 to 15% of the take with a gratuity seems about right. The three employees can split it the way they see fit....

Any less, and if it was my room, next time you'd be leaving at closing time....

I don't think a % of the winnings would work if they broke even?!...I like a flat amount known up front, so no stiffing would take place.

I used to close The Cue Corner at like midnight, but a lot of players knew I hung around to practice, and they would bring their game there to finish. If I was there practicing a tip was optional. If I was on my way home...we had to talk. Nothing worse than wanting to go home and wash off the "pool room stank"....and someone wants to play some $10 sets til the sun comes up:D

It's things like this that make gambling in poolrooms tough propositions these days. I have been in spots with a large lead where the house has cut off the lights and taken the balls promptly at closing time. I always offer to pay extra and tip generously when the place stays open for me. Even those times when I have been on the losing end I have always made sure to tip the staff appropriately. Perhaps this is a reason I am always welcomed back wherever I go and why I get some good steers from the staff. Well placed grease makes life a lot smoother and easier. And it's good karma.

Now, if you are the person who got stiffed. Well the best thing is probably to let it pass and take a slightly firmer stand next time with regards to "table time". I would wager that the more you ask for, the more you will get. Strangely, people seem to respect being charged more than if you are nice to them. So charge more and don't be surprised to find them tipping you better as well.

Hey Roadie,

Was this room in Miami by any chance? I played a session there once from 3 in the afternoon until 11 the next morning for $500 a set. You can imagine what the bill was (Thank God I came out well ahead)! But I tell you that the owner and the staff rolled out the carpet for me every time I went back! We've got to recognize that keeping a room open for 9 hours past closing time is an extraordinary privilege that's being extended! I agree that 10% of the stake is more than fair.

I think I was in junior high school the last time I saw anyone play a SET for $10...lol :D

yea cue, I was exaggerating, but I would get local guys who were just at the bar knocking on the door to let them play. Usually it started at the bar, then whoever lost barked...I'll crush you on the big tables.....and off they stumble to the pool room.:D It was actually fun to watch them play sometimes, other times it was torcher:rolleyes:

Sad but True:

$20.00 is an insult as in everything a few ruin for everyone. I believe a little discussion with the employees might have gone a long way. There are a lot of words that come to mind but JERK will work.
