Age and Focus.

Poolmanis, there is one surefire way to sharpen your focus. Gamble.
If that doesn't narrow your field of vision, nothing will.
And, speaking of wives, my second wife started ragging me about not taking her anywhere. She said. "Take me someplace I never been before." So I grabbed her by the arm and took her into the kitchen. :)

I would gamble if someone wanted gamble against me. Town where I live nobody wants gamble against me and all I can get is small bet games with huge handicap to my opponent.
When I go southern Finland I get money games but making trip is already so expensive I can't do that often. So I compete. But still competitions are too rare happening to get full benefit from it.
Sometimes you can also get shot out from tournament even you don't do anything wrong. (lost couple matches sometimes just losing lag.. Opponent made 6 and out or 8 and out)

When you are the best player you always have to give up weight. Thats good though because you can always get a game.

I always take my wife with me every where I go. I'd rather do that then kiss her good bye!

I believe if you've played the game for money all your life the focus stays about the same. But one size don't fit all. Johnnyt

'Our life is frittered away by detail...simplify, simplify.' Henry David Thoreau.

We live in curious times, my friends. It's called the information age, but it could just as easily be called the age of distraction. Phone messages, emails, Twitter and Facebook accounts, and not to mention time spent on AZB. No small wonder we loose focus in our daily lives with all of this connectivity.
We can quickly see how distraction (another word for being connected?) hurts creativity. And, creativity is precisely what we use when developing and playing the games that we do. But, and here's the catch, we can't communicate, or consume, while trying to create.
The solution, although simple, is hard to do. We need to move away from these distractions, (and, no, television is not the answer). We must turn off the phones, and computers long enough to read, write, run, nap, watch, listen, and play. Even a quiet conversation with someone can be beneficial.
The key is disconnecting. By adopting a few of the above techniques we can become less stressful in our lives, and I can promise that your focus, as well as your pool play will improve. :)

Sounds good, but is it possible?

Good thread, btw. At 61, I have the same problem of focusing. I've found some help nutrition-wise, but I think aging means our minds are full of stuff and that takes away attention from pool games and other things that are not life/death situations.

A guy would think he'd be better, not worse, at focusing, what with all the practice he's had over the ages. Harumph!

I don't believe that it is, Jeff.
I'm near your age, and because of that I can say that a lot of things that used to be important to me are not so important now. People call that maturity and I think it's a good thing. We've moved past many of the obstacles the younger folks are calling their passions, and are now able to focus on the more simplistic, and meaningful aspects of life.

Poolmanis...Learn a consistent eye pattern. That will be the best thing you can bring to your pool game, after an accurate and repeatable stroke.

Lately I've been practicing a lot and especially shooting Straight Pool.
I noticed that my focus is lot harder to keep these days if compared to days when I was younger.
I never been really good focusing things unless I'm really into that subject.
Reading comics was one my favorite things to do and you could drop bomb next to me back then when I was reading them. It would go unnoticed.
Pool was second thing what kept my natural focus. I could play six hours straight and never notice how much time was until they come kick me out from pool hall...

Nowadays I can dwell to focus short times but I'm easily distracted. I noticed lack of focus everyday subjects even more last two three years. I've started working out to my physical shape more seriously lately and I'm gonna find some practices to better focus.
I'm only 38 years old..

So anyone here noticed similarities to their life or is it just me? And if yes what age you noticed dropped ratio of focus? Have you try fix it and how?

Bingo! .....

Aging n focus, etc.

I'm almost 65 and could shoot pool forever when I was younger. I was out of pool for 40 years and now I'm retired and I have my own 9" table and some good Pat Diviney cues. I'm to lazy to shoot drills so I shoot Ghost 9 Ball for practice. The Ghost has the best of me quite often. I'm only good for a couple hours by myself and do my best shooting the first 3 hours when I play some one else.

It is hard to stay mentally tough for me. I guess I shoot pool for fun and I'm ok with that. Priorities change when we age. Pool, shooting my guns, camping, hunting/fishing, ATV riding and bike riding are priorities for me.

I admire the really good players who are intense and grind out a long tourney or match.
I also believe if Efren had the interest and fire in his belly that he had 30 years ago he would be at the top even at his age. Things just change as we age.

That's good though because you can always get a game

I wish that were true........
