age pros started playing

I think we have to define, playing pool, and playing more serious pool.

I played pool some as a kid on friends tables, and as a teen, i'm sure like many do. Should I count this? Or when I got sucked into it, Hook-line and sinker, when I was 21? (Bar's) Thats when I started playing in Tourneys, Leagues, and buying equipment to assist me on the road to becoming a pro! :D

John, howmany yrs was it before you turned pro? Howmany hours a day did you play when ou got serious?

I know Lori Jon Jones started when she was 4. Her dad built a a stand around the table so she could shoot.

Shane started at 18 months, I first heard of him when he was 6. I was the lucky one to be his first opponent in his first State tournament. He was very capable of getting out from the break then. 8 ball or 9 ball. Two years later he was runner up in his division.

Hmmm.... at the Derby City, I asked him when he started and he said when he was 2 years old, climbed up on the table... etc.

I started when I was about 15. Leagues at 18, tournies at 20. First national title soon after.

Oh wait. Oh hell, that was a really nice dream there........:(

Dont get me started on Jeanette.... she used to come down and play pool and many other things in a room in Deer Park, NY. does she mention that in her book, or how she got to be so good??

Deaf since birth, Van Boening grew up in a world defined more by sight than sound.

SHANE VAN BOENING, 18 months old, perched in a captain?s chair in his grandfather?s poolhall and watched the white ball chase the colored balls around the table. No fussing. No wandering. Just watching.

reading further into the article it continues...
Months later, at Christmas, his grandfather ripped the wrapping paper off of a big box and said, ?C?mere, Shane.? It was a 2-by-4-foot pool table, with miniature balls and stick.

Wow. You know, you see all these so called "feel good" sports movies but that would be a great one. Best part is it's true! Maybe that'll be the next movie to give pool a jump start!

I was also thinking that the SVB story would make a great movie as I read that article. It could end with Shane winning the US Open and 15 or so years from now there could be a sequel.

Absolutely. I'd pay to see that. I'd just be curious to see how the general public might recieve it. I honestly think they might go for it.

Wow, I just got back in town and noticed all the great replies. thanks John S. and everyone else. ps I won the tournament :D

Well done! Sounds like a good Saturday night to me!:D

I was 13 when i played for the first time. Use to go to the arcade after school and play on the bar tables they had. I remember getting so excited when I learned how to draw a cue ball. Sure miss them days! :)
