Age Related Decline

At 41?

Hell, my socks are older than that!
I was a full blown cripple at 40. After 5 back operations I’m ok. I’m 54 but can see my body rotting away quickly and the back problems are creeping in again. I’d be long dead if I had any habits. Genetics are so powerful. It’s a spectrum and I’m on the lower end of it. My brain is on the upper end of that spectrum.

Take the good with the bad and enjoy what you can while you can. No guarantees.

Im 54 and haven't been a player for 20 years or more. Recently bought a new cue that does things I never was able to do with my 30 year old playing cue. After playing off and on the last few months I'm sure I could get back to 90% of my old self but the desire isn't like it use to be. I got the room to.put carpet in the garage with a 8fter. Still kicking around the idea.

One thing I know for sure is age in most people interferes with range of motion. Some people eye sight fails with age.

My eye are ok, knee are shot, arthritis in feet & spine.

Age or getting old sucks.
Right?

I actually pulled a hamstring shooting pool about three weeks ago.

I’ll say that again. I pulled a freaking hamstring shooting pool! 😑

I fell going up the stairs a couple months ago. How is that possible I wondered. It is……

Still better than the date with the stainless steel table……

We are lucky to still be here, no matter our current form/condition.

I was crippled by a clown doctor at 50, and I was born stupid, lazy and poor , Any chance of a redeal?

Lol I hope that’s not true. I’m not laughing at you. I’d like a redeal.

I see old people working their ass off thinking they have it better than me. Is the grass always greener? I’m not sure.
Redeal granted! If I could

Thanks, I meant it as a little comic relief , and I appreciate the kind thought, but I am like many other people , I focus on the bad, and forget that I was blessed with a wonderful healthy wife , 3 great healthy children , 13 beautiful healthy grandchildren and 6 beautiful healthy great grand children. I'm ashamed of myself for forgetting . If it were possible , I would take all their pain and suffering of their lifetimes on myself, so that they did not have it.

At what age do you feel that age related decline in ones game is inevitable ,assuming general good health and average eyesight? Can lots of practice help offset decline or is it just a fact? Thanks
Efren (67), Earl (60), and Bustamante (57) are all strong examples of pro players who have managed to play at a very high level in to their 50s, and even their 60s in Efren’s case. However, compared to how they played in their 20s and 30s, even with all the knowledge and experienced they’ve gained from decades of competition, their is still no comparison.

For any player in their 50s, 60s, or 70s that says they are playing their best pool of their life, as awesome as that is, I’d guess most likely never got obsessed enough with the game to put in the time to become that strong a player in their teens, 20s and 30s.

There is no one rule that applies to everybody. Some people age better than others. That's a reality. My father, who was a physician once told me that Stress is the biggest killer! Living a stress free life (as much as possible) seems to prolong our lives and our health. I have a good friend named Jack Rafferty who is a stress relief specialist (a title I gave him. he's actually a therapist) who is 85 or 86 years old and bounces around like a young man. He is full of energy. Of course he eats a healthy diet and gets plenty of exercise (he has an active sex life too!). And he loves to play pool!

My opinion is that lack of continued motivation to do the work is what derails many pool players as they age. Efren still enjoyed playing and competing well into his late 50's and may have still been the best One Pocket player in the world at that time. Irving Crane and Jimmy Caras could (and did) win major pool tournaments in their late 50's. Joe Balsis can be added to this list of winners in their 50's. Onifrio Lauri won the Eastern States 9-Ball with all the best players in it at age 69! Jimmy Moore could still run 100 balls and beat strong players (sometimes) at age 80! They all had physical ailments at some time in their life but that didn't stop them from competing at a high level.

How old is Ike Runnels and he is still kicking ass. He and all the above are exceptions, but the main ingredient they all share is the motivation to continue to do the work to maintain their skill level at pool.

On a personal note, I somehow lost my motivation to play pool in my mid 30's, after fifteen plus years of daily play. I had sold my poolroom and put my stick away, for just a while I thought. That while turned out to be 2-3 years and when I came back it was almost like starting over. I didn't really play much after that (I was busy putting on tournaments) until I was in my mid 50's and opened my last poolroom. I got back into playing on a near daily basis and would say that I regained close to 90% of my top speed. I was once again competing against good players (road men) and holding my own. It took a young Tony Chohan to put a real ass whipping on me. :)

At age 62, i decided to give it a go as Darren Appleton says. I have played EVERY DAY FOR TWO YEARS ON MY HOME TABLE, 3 hours a day. I did not miss a day. I did it all, drills, playing the ghost, hitting hundreds of straight shots a day. I gave it everything i had. Turned 64 a few months ago, and i knew it was over. I just dont have it. Fat fingers, big body, i move around too much, can’t get my head down low enought like the pros. Too many things working against me. And now I’m dealing with a sciatica nerve problem on my lower back, three weeks already, and my stroke is gone. Gone for good i would imagine. But hey, i did enjoy the game, and i thought i could do some damage playing 9 ball. But its over for me.

i still lift heavy weights in the gym, and i dont think pool is the game for bigger muscular guys, (5/11-265 pounds)
Tell that to Mike Massey while he's turning you upside down and shaking all the change from your pockets ;)

Got to be one of the best lines yet. You suck because you're just too buff to play good?? Holy shit. lol

It’s true when you are training regularly your muscles are not firing like they do when your instroke. Your touch is gone, soft delicate shots are a disaster. When I was full time in the gym on steroids for years my pool game suffered. When I play pool full time my gym results suffered. It’s impossible to properly lift & play at the same time. One of the 2 will not be near par. That’s in the past for me-they both suck right now🤣😂

Besides Mike M "strong arm john" is another man that's buff and tuff to beat, esp on a bar box.

If i had to guess i'd put him in his mid/late 60's

One of the last and greatest bodybuilders was Frank Zane (imo) who, per general consensus, achieved his titles on the natch

most who followed him at the top levels of the sport looked like freaks

i believe SAJ got what he has/had on the natch because besides playing pool at a shortstop level he also shot free throws for $$$ which most that are roid enhanced wouldn't do well enough to get the cheese....70/80% maybe, however, you can't challenge the world if your a sub 90% shooter

that said i would have tried him some when i was 18/19 yrs old

played 21 with a college baller for a dollar a point in 63 or 64

the way we played was flip a coin for choice of breaking or shooting second

i won the flip and elected to shoot 2nd

he ran to 24 and missed, i ran to 151

that was the only game

disclosure....basket at my parents house where i spent hundreds of hours shooting the rock and my ball which had a little less air pressure than a 'game" ball

Frank had amazing genetics. He wasn’t natural, however he didn’t do the amount of drugs the guys just after him used. These days the 50 year old bodybuilders are dropping dead like flys. 3 or 4 this month. I used everything myself, I didn’t abuse any of it. Frank was smart. The guys who were all natural from his era look like swimmers.
