Aiming with english

I always look at the CB but depending on what English I am using. I play with alot of English and have been trying to stop that as much. I like to watch that CB dance lol . But if I am using right hand english then I am looking at the right side of the CB but it depends also if I want to follow thru or draw as to where I hit the Cb also.

When using english, are you looking down the center of the cue ball, or are you looking down your shaft?

I aim the cue. There are few instances such as a very thin cut that are edge to edge with the cb/ob showing very clear in the vision that it makes more sense to focus on the balls.

The rest I find it silly to aim a big ball at a target when I have a much more accurate pointing device I can line up with the cb such that it’s edges are equal to the cb edges due to a combination of perspective with the tapering of the cue working perfectly together with that.

So I’m generally lining up with either the left or right edge of shaft for left or right cut , or the center of the shaft for straight on to very small cut angles.

There’s a few sub groups of stick aiming methods S.A.M. Is one and uses fractional aiming at the ob and what I do is technically a back of ball aim point where I’m actually lining up woth a spot on the cloth where it meets edge of cb at the point where the dark shadow cast exits the base of the ball and makes a little V at that cloth/shadow and CB circumference. Which is behind the ball where it’s visually at and it’s front side is the contact point directly on the pocketing line.

I like the simple visually apparent point. But just using the ob like a normal human being works fine as well.

SVB uses a stick aiming method Joey Grey describs uses and teaches a method similar to what I use. Many players in Oklahoma learned a stick aiming method as opposed to aiming the cb. it’s been around for over a hundred years and possibly used by players like Ralph Greenleaf.

Regardless it works very effectively for many players. Do with that as you see fit.

That’s a good question. I use a pivot for english, so I guess my vision is centered on the cue ball rather than the shaft. I suppose I could move my head or my whole body when I pivot but I feel like that would be crazy.

Which do you think is better?

I line up that way and get my eyes adjusted into confirming where I intend to aim determining my OB contact pt.
Thereafter, I’m not looking at my CB aim point, cue shaft or the CB again. My eyes are focused on the OB contact.

When I use the System for Aiming With Sidespin (SAWS), I pivot my entire body (by moving my hips) with the BHE pivot so my stroking-arm/body relationship remains constant. Therefore, I keep my vision along the cue during the BHE pivot. With the FHE pivot, I keep my body and grip hand still and just shift the bridge hand, but the vision is still mostly over the cue after this pivot (since the FHE pivot moves the cue so little at the head, even with large amounts of sidespin).
