Hi everyone
More and more fellow az'ers are telling stories of cues being damaged while being shipped. The best suggestion that was made was using pvc pipe. Trying to come up with a cheap bullet proof container. But there are some mysterious damages.
Example, I was told this by a fellow az'er that a prominent cue maker air freighted 2 cues to NY. Both cues were cracked behind the pins on arrival.

I have received sealed steel containers that have been air freighted to me and the container was sucked in like an empty gas can on a cool night.
drilling some holes in the pvc pipe will stop this vacuum with its crushing force.
At the same time many of us use air travel monthly, if not weekly, having bottles of shampoo break in our bags.
But the finish on pool cues is an air and water proof membrain covering almost all of the butt of pool cue.
with only the joint and butt of the cue to breath out of.
this hasnt happened to me yet.

So here is the question over a long periods of air travel at 35.000 ft or what the normal altitude is on a jet airliner.
Is it possible that cues can be damaged just
by rapid decompression, plus extreem temperature rise.
And is there anything that can be done to protect our pool cues?
This thread is about trying to understand the laws of physics not shifting blame of any damaged cue to / or on anyone.
I think there are times that our cues are popping, warping splitting because of unknown pressures and rapid temperature changes.
Any info on rapid compression and decompression, presures and a temperatures changes that take place on a air liner could be helpful

The standard temperature lapse rate is 3.5 degrees drop per 1000 ft. of altitude outside temperature. If it is 70 degrees on the tarmac at sea level the outside temp at 35,000 feet could be over -50 F or lower.

Since we PMed, I found out that all cargo holds are pressurized and only forward cargo holds are heated because animals in cages are put there for protection. All other cargo holds are generally not heated on most transport aircraft but the pilot can control these environment to augment heat if required

I knew Ray Schuler and his shop was about 1 mile from my house. He told us that he once shipped some cues by air to NY and when they arrived they both cues were split badly behind the pin in the forearm. What had happened is that they had used a new thicker epoxy for the pin and it had built up a hydraulic pressure in the blind hole behind the pin during install. That pressure was sealed in and a constant. The exterior of the cue was subject to the lower pressure in a non pressurized aircraft and the wood split on both cues.

I can't be certain but -50 is quite cold and would freeze many liquids ect in baggage compartments. I would think cargo temp "even on cargo planes" would be maintained above freezing as well as some cabin pressure. The lack of cabin pressure would have undesirable effects on may sealed items as well. Its my understanding that the entire body of an airliner is sealed and pressurized. Of course cargo will undergo changes but I doubt it is subjected to external temp and atmospheric pressure extremes.
 
I use heavy wall cardboard tube (5/32-4mm)wall, with bubble wrap and tape a wood block inside the end.
Never had a problem.
 
I've often gone into my checked luggage right after landing and nothing has ever been frozen or cold to the touch.

Apparently, the entire airplane is pressurized. Even if the back cargo bay is not heated, the air temp is still habitable.

You are corrected sir.

Did some research, called a commercial airline pilot friend. In most cargo holds, the exhaust air from the pax cabin is exhausted around the cargo bin sidewalls keeping it from getting too cold and well above freezing. The forward holds are temperature controlled to ensure transported animals are treated in a humane way.

Thank You Everyone for straight info. evey reply was right on.
i check everything i could from soda cans to co2. nothing that i can add to what hasnt already been said
cargo hold ( can) get very cold. thats it .
the flooring store throw away heavy wall card board tubes is a favorite
not much we can do about the fork lift driver running over a hi end cue.

I did find some info that i feel is important but its not on this topic
When flying you should always be awake at landing yawning or swallowing
if you are flying with a young child or infant and (if) the child has a
cold, there ears (may) not adjust to ambient air presure.
