Alex P vs Mick Hill in the Finals of a Chinese table 9 ball tournament

To be fair to the topic, I did watch a few racks of this and there is just no way this would make it as a spectator sport. Obviously, it's a way tougher table than even the tightest Diamonds, but the idea is to get as many people watching. This does not even come close to that.

Although, it is interesting to see a 9 ball tournament on these tables. I honestly did not think anyone would ever do one.
theres nothing about this that is viewer friendly aside from the hot ref which is pointless imo for pool

its an ugly table, using ugly balls, ugly cues
ugly jerseys
ugly arena with ugly chairs

The Chinese are trying to invent shit for the sake of being different. IMO.

They have a bastard table, now playing 9 ball on it instead of 8 ball.

That’s an improvement over Heyball at least.

The scoring system though is hard to follow. They couldn’t just play a race to 7 like every other 9 ball tournament in the world?

Old saying goes money talks BS walks personally i don't like it at all ,but for that kind of money they'll play on a 4x4 table.

I only watched a rack or two. Couldn't do more.

It seems the points awarded for winning a rack are 4, and for a break and run its 10.
Correct, and give one to opponent for a foul
I think they play a set number of racks (35) and whoever has more points at the end of those is the winner.
Correct - Or if the time elapses. Highest score wins. Took a while for my American friend to get that one player could win more racks, but lose on points.

Orcullo vs Wu Jiaqing was awesome

Ko Pin Yi vs Chu Bing Jie promised to be close for a while, but CBJ took it.

This DuYa event has had more TW and foreign players in the last 32 then I've seen in any Chinese-8 event.
I'm surprised more people on here do not love this? Everyone is always whining about needing tighter pockets, well, this is it, as tight as pockets can realistically get, apart from the side pockets which are actually somewhat generous. Pocket sizes do vary a tiny bit from table to table, the tightest ones are extremely tight, even more so than a pro snooker table.
I think it's fantastic, I love that it's moved beyond 8-ball.
I've played some 9 ball on this kind of table and to reliably run racks, you need to be pro speed. I ran 2 in a row at one point, which I was actually proud of. Many racks have to be developed, even if the balls are all clear of each other and have clear paths to the pockets, balls on the rails will limit what you can do. I have also missed near hangers with ball in hand, which hasn't happened to me in a decade at least on any tightness of American style table. Even low 700+ fargo players have no shot at stringing racks outside once in a blue moon. Any shot can be missed. In 8 ball you can work around the problems, but in 9 ball, if the balls do not lay right, you can't run the rack. Personally I'm not a fan of tight pocket 9 ball, but this is what that looks like. Lots of safes and tactical play.
Same people moaning about this game, will moan about 4" Rasson tables. "It's not for Joe public" - well, Joe Public can play on 5" buckets, no sweat. Pro's can play on Pro level equipment.

Tables look alright, Dynaspheres are nice and the right colour, the cues are a players preference
ugly jerseys
I quite like the colored differentiation to show ranking (a bit like the purple and orange caps in some t20 cricket tournaments to show highest run getter or wicket taker), and then the standard shirt. they don't look awful, but could look better.

The arena is a bit like China open, so there's two or three areas, and I don't think they all match up. The MainStage is awesome, but they need to make it more available to be filled with people... It seems only players who are out, and players invite have been the crowd so far.

Had a lot of friends play and attend this event. I'm too busy working like a slave to make my way there. Same goes for a tournament near HZ soon with a 3million RMB 1st place. Only people who already have money and time to spare can make more money playing pool....

These tables have existed for quite a while... longer than they have been exporting the game to global eyes.

agree

It's easy once you spend a second thinking about it. It also makes games much closer and more interesting. A lot of the general public play "Zhuifen" with cards to keep score for a bit of money (4,6,7,9 ball variations exist). This follows similar scoring.

Great shot but relatively common on a snooker table. You go side rail first just wide enough that the pocket won't except ball. You can even load up the topspin and arch into the object ball.
Top + a little outside. It works on 4" Rasson tables too. Have to be more specific with the point. I've also used the jaws of the middle on an American table in a similar fashion.

I made a 3/9 combo after using the top left jaw in this fashion. One of the best shots I have ever made. DM if you'd like to see it and I can send a link. Seems to be the only way I can post videos here.

If the Chinese group behind these international events on these tables had simply used American style tables, and played regular 9 or 10 ball, I think they would have had a winner. International superstars would probably want to go and compete, for the sake of competing. International fans would probably be more interested in watching. I also think the Chinese general public might even be more interested. A case of "beating the foreigners at their own game" would bring pride to the nation.

As it is now, Heyball and this version of 9 ball is only gathering some international fan attention due to the high prize money. It's still boring. I don't think many are watching.

It's just like Bonus Ball was. Everyone, including the pros, knew it had no future, but went to get the free money.

Pool table unbefitting.

Makes sense because Rasson's are gaffy if not fresh or set up perfect.

First place according to Alex's partner doing commentary from Canada is 700,000 USD.
Wow, two $700,000 first prize events in a row. First, heyball and now nine ball. Simply incredible.

I watched a couple of racks and didn't love it, but I love anything that brings this kind of payout to those who try to earn a living at cue-sports.
