Alex- The next Efren?

yobagua,
Alex has yet to prove himself in all games? You're not serious are you?

His knowledge in all games is suspect. hahahaha I love that comment from you.

You can love that comment. But it is my opinion. If you read my post clearly you can see I give big props to that young Pinoy. But he has not reached Efrens status yet. And I have not seen ALEX play Banks or 3 Rail Billiards like Efren. Perhaps suspect is the wrong word. But I still think he has some time before you give him Pool God Status. And I am very serious.

And to you KC dont confuse me with Fast Larry! Please read my post carefully before you chime in. I only meant to give Alex big respect but he is still a young man and it should be exciting to see where he goes from here. I dont consider myself to have any superior knowledge other than my opinion.

Alex will be a great player.
But, will he draw crowds like Efren?
I don't know. He has a ton of potential though.
A friend has told me, Thorsten Homann might be the best player in the planet now. He is serious as he and his business friends are sponsoring Hohmann.

I think Alex will be one of the all time greats. I watched a performance of him playing the 1o ball ghost at JOB's several years ago that convinced me of this kid's heart and talent.

He hasn't really hit his stride yet in tournament play but he has had some noteworthy accomplishments including US Open 2cnd and 2cnd in the world championships. Plus if I remember correctly there was a thing on the Joss Tour where he won four tournaments in one week, 9-ball the first weekend, then one pocket and eight ball during the week and then 9 ball again the following weekend, all against top notchers.

The performance of the last two weeks in Hawaii and in California really shows his diversity and his mettle. I think that Alex "may" surpass his elders eventually to have a better record than his Filipino elders.

At least this is my prediction - check back in ten years :-))

John - sure that Don Purdy disagrees and has some test to prove he's right.

I would hope that your friend thinks that Hohmann is the best player if he is doing the sponsoring. - Warning self-aggrandizing name dropping about to happen - When I was with Instroke (famous brand name case) and we sponsored Ralf Souquet (famous US Open and World Champion) for two years, I felt as though Ralf "was" the best player breathing. I had to, he was my horse and a finely tuned one at that.

John Barton

Last year in June I saw Alex play in the Hard Times Jamboree. It is a tournament with 9 ball and 1 hole. This was right after Reno where John Schmidt captured the title. Alex was beaten soundly by Scott Frost and Tony Chohan 2 well known one hole players. They just seemed to outmove Alex. Alex was a different horse when it came to 9 ball. He just moved through the field and mowed everyone down. I guess thats why I still felt he had some other things to learn. However this young man learns so fast that surely his one hole game must have improved by now. I still think that if you have ever seen Efren play a long session of one hole as I have there is no one that surpass' his game. Just my opinion.

HAHAHA!!! Sorry I couldn't resist but to quote this. Your friend is nuts. Thorsten is a great player and all, but his winning the WPC was a fluke. Alex was out of stroke, Thorsten was in stroke. Thats why all these top players beat each other on any given day. The best player on the planet is Efren, Thorsten may fall somewhere in the 30's or 40's. What an immature statement your friend made. Thorsten doesn't have enough knowledge to be the best player on the planet. This is what separates the kings from the knights. Efren will out-kick, out-bank, out-safety any of these young players. What the young players posess is mainly firepower, with the exception of Alex, who's got firepower plus extensive knowledge. Of course they can beat him on any given day, but if they were to play a series of matches consecutively, Efren would come out on top for sure.
This brings to mind the Tony Robles/ Ernesto Dominguez match at this recent tourney in LA. Many people thought Tony Robles was supposed to beat Ernesto, what they don't understand is Ernesto has tons of knowledge on Tony. Ernesto played 3c Billiards quite a bit in the past few decades, he won every safety battle, never left Tony a shot the entire match. If Tony were to win that match, he would have to put on a break and run exhibition, before Ernesto got to the table, because he can't out safety mr. niceguy.

Alex the next Efren?

We're still waiting for the next Babe Ruth. No, Alex may turn out to be a great player, but there will never be another Babe Ruth or another Efren Reyes, they're from another planet.

m right there with you LastTwo. I talked to Ernesto and he told me that he has a tough time trying to play in tournaments and holding his regular job as pool table mechanic. When he covers the table for a tournament he most times makes more than the winner. He can be such a great player. I have been fortunate to live in the city where he lives and he has been so helpful in making shots understandable. His knowledge of 3 cushion is deep too.

I saw Alex run racks on Efren to beat him at the Bike Casino 11 to 3. Alex would rack, slow break making a wing ball in the corner and send the cue the one and the two ball down the table and run out - 5 racks in a row. Efren's rack and break was not as effective. I was in awe of Alex and had doubts about Efren.
In later matches Efren adjusts his break and is pocketing a ball and running out. Efren then beats Alex 11 to 5 and I am in awe of Efren and had doubts about Alex.
These road warriors are so good that anyone can win a given set so we will have to wait for the long run.
How about a race to 125 or 21 ahead to allow the players to adjust.

Here's a little tidbit since someone mentioned a long race to adjust. When Alex and Corey Duel were running around together they played races to 30 every day.

Corey never........never won a set.

That's exactly why he is my pick to win the Ring Game Steve. I believe, at this time, he is the best player in it.

No problem yobagua. Alex never beat cory in any of those sets? hmmm thats hard to believe.
