All around best american player??

I could be wrong. Maybe John is the only person that can do it. Whatever though, it's still a practice game in my opinion.

And John will never have my respect as I'm sure I'll never have his. That's just the way it is.

Seems like i heard about Earl running a bunch in practice and he doesnt really play the game.I think it was over 400. John is an incrediable 14.1 player

nevel is talented for sure but sometimes i think people mistake strength for talent.
larry is definitely one of the strongest physically on tour.
he can do stroke shots no one else can do ,thats not being more talented ,thats being stronger.

if he was the most talented he would have many titles but talent in pool is things like poise under pressure, shotmaking and cueball control.
dont get me wrong larry has all those talents for sure.

i guess it would be like saying bubba watson pro golfer is the most talented golfer on tour because he hits it the farthest, theres more to golf than hitting it far.

anyway im bringing this up because ive heard many times larry is the most talented poolplayer and frankly hes just the strongest ,big difference.

by the way when i ran 403 larry was overheard saying thats easy to do any pro could do it if they wanted.

i noticed in the last few 14.1 challeges i dont think larrys broken 50.

trust me running 400 takes more talent then doing stroke shots that have nothing to do with pool except they take strength.

in closing i think larry plays awesome and is extremely great player ,its just that strength and pool greatness are completely different things.

John I grew up in a room with Bobby Hunter and a couple other guys that played 14.1 about his speed so I think Ive seen some good 14.1 games and games played the right way and anybody that says any pro can run 400 is frankly full of(well you know) . Man 400 is freakin incredidable and I commend you on the dedication it takes to get to that level. 400 what the hell theres nothing much that can go wrong in that race is there LOL.I dont care how great you shoot balls in the hole one bad roll and its over.
Keep up the good work and good luck at the open.

I don't mean disrespect to anyone here but I had to speak out at least once. The reason so few people play Straight Pool is because the game is too hard period!!!!! 8ball, 9ball, 10ball, Banks, One pocket compared to Straight Pool is like comparing Checkers to Chess. It's paint by numbers vs. Michael Angelo

People just don't have the mental focus to play Straight Pool. Sure we can have laser focus for a rack of 8ball, 9ball, 10ball etc.... but show laser focus for 100, 200, 300, 400 balls.

People don't play it anymore for the same reason balk line is no longer played. It's boring... Try sitting in a seat for a half hour while an opponent shoots 50 balls in, snorefest...

Earl Strickland
Shannon Daulton
Buddy Hall

I love them very much, I wish Shannon would shine more in tournament play... but he's a great player and maybe he didn't get good rolls in his career, but he is a genuis.

Jay, what a Post!

Chris you're a pretty smart cookie yourself and a damn good gambler. BUT, you don't know pool quite as well as you think you do. Efren in his prime against Ronnie in his prime would have been no contest. But it wouldn't come out the way you think. Overall Ronnie was the superior player. I won't go into all the reasons why, but he was.

Ronnie claims today that Efren is the best he ever saw, but Ronnie was never one to brag. I will say this, Ronnie knew things about One Pocket that will be lost when he's gone. He had moves to "funnel" balls toward his pocket that no one knows or shoots today. NO ONE! He could escape traps with two and three rail kicks that are never seen or shot at today.

His ability to shoot off angle combinations, find dead balls in the pack, and make crazy billiard shots may never be seen again. No one could read the pack better than Ronnie. Efren isn't even close there. One more big plus was that Ronnie NEVER missed a ball to win a big game or a big match. He was fearless under pressure, the bigger the bet the better he played. You would have really enjoyed seeing him play. You wouldn't be able to take your eyes off him. No one could.

Plus he was entertaining as hell, with a gift of gab unmatched this side of Keith McCready. And when he turned that conversation on, his game went up a ball and his opponents went down a ball. Add all these things up, and you'll see why he was the top dog in One Pocket for twenty years or more.

One last thing Chris, Ronnie was a grinder like you. He was always giving up the nuts, so he had to play a long time to get the money. God bless Efren, but he has some quit in him. I've seen it. Get him down a few games and he's looking for the door. Get Ronnie down and he wants to raise the bet. You would have liked him, a lot! Back then.
,

I know this is a couple of days old Jay, LOL, but what a "GREAT" Post! I'd have given anything to have seen Ronnie play in his prime, about 66? And Joey Spaeth told me he thought that Ronnie was the best he'd ever played, must've been something to have seen!
I've got to chirp a bit about Sigel and One-pocket, though. You really like him over Varner in that contest? Sigel played really well, but Varner in 1-pocket has another gear, and it's a grinder! Now there's a guy with no quit in him!

Ken...Earl WON the Carolina Classic, a 1 pkt event that hosted the best players in the country, just 2 or 3 years ago (this was a sort of "comeback" tournament for him, as he hadn't won anything in quite a while). Trust me, he can play 1-hole with the best of 'em! :D

I disagree. Justin Cone beat Earl playing even one hole for a lotta cash.
