All this talk about pool, leads me to one question, Who Cares & Why

All the endless BS about IPT, Bonus Ball, More people playing, grow pool etc.


got me thinking, i was playing tonight. took a 15 minute break looked around the pool room which was kinda busy. And as wondering HOW DO I BENEFIT? if 10,000,000 people go out buy a cue and get real serious about pool. What's in it for me? NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.


It would help Shane, there might be a few more guys come along who are good or better than he is. Diamond would sell more tables, great for Greg and Mark, Jay mite sell a few more books, CJ a few lessons. But other than a hand full of people NONE OF us benefit at all, sure I play better than most of them would for a few years, but its not going to put me in the big leagues because there would be new talent that would pass me up in 2,3,4,5 years. There will NEVER BE ACTION AGAIN, cel phones with cameras and the internet destroyed that. More Tournys, I dont play in them and if I did, how much would that matter. As far as the Pro's sure 100 people out of the 10,000,000 new people would be making a living, yay for them, always like to see people do well, but 100 people dont really effct me.

So why the big push, i'm really getting board with it...


Of course i want to see my friends who do make $$$ in pool do well, but at the end of the day its their job, i have my job. my nose in their biz aint what its all about

EDIT: thats why i made this thread, its a legit question, i'm trying to see why people are interested in pool beyond themselves.

I'd like to see pool do well because I love the game. I don't really care if there's anything in it for me or not.
 
Eh, I disagree on some of those. The more popular it becomes;

1) The more tournaments there are
2) The more tournaments, the bigger chance they're closer to you
3) The more tournaments, the more local tournaments it will create
4) Cameras, etc.. a bit hard to keep an eye on 300,000 potential local A players even with cameras
5) More people will gamble at it, because they think they're good, just like cards now

And so on..
 
Same could be said about any sport/entertainment entity.
As much as I appreciate watching excellence in any medium I never have understood the "sport" phenomenon anyway. I mean why should I care if my city team wins the cup, 99.9% of them are from elsewhere as is the coach and management.
They make millions from it I don't make anything, sure I may get entertained by their skills but do I really give a monkeys if they win or lose? is it a reflection on me as a person from this city, does it make me a lesser person or inadequate when they lose or better when they win? no of course not.
It's an odd human condition a neanderthal throwback methinks.
 
I'm not worried about 10 million new people playing pool. I'm worried about the tiny portion of the game I care about thats hanging on by its fingernails.

I've never understood the push for mainstream acceptance of pro pool. It would likely ruin the things most of us enjoy about it. Personally I just would like to see some structure and consistency so maybe the players a decade from now can play for a little more than what guys played for in the 70's. If that happens it means the pro game is healthy instead of on charity funded life support like it is now.

Pool itself is awesome now if you look at the global picture. Its only the pro side that sucks for all of the endless reasons that have been discussed here for years.

As for me, I guess I don't care about the new venture, but may not go to Tunica if the field doesn't hit 64 and half the field is from Oklahoma. I know I should paste this into Jay's thread, but oh well.

Why do you need to benefit? I play for the love of the game, the few shot's, games, stories and people I'll never forget. I don't know why anyone would need any more than that ;-)

that I agree with 100%,

with that in mind why sit there and grind away about bonus ball?


that's my point, its not as much about pool as it is sitting here grinding away arguing with people were friends with, all the in-fighting. its destructive.

Ive been kinda following some of threads and it got me to thinking,why dosnt someone
approach the beer and pop companies.Then i realized it probably dosnt matter to them,were going to buy their product regardless.Good for them bad for the players.

I still think some how if they could tie in with the pool leagues you could create a wider range of people getting involved with the pro players,could start something.

The primary reason I'm concerned about the future popularity of pool is to make sure I have somewhere to play (no room for a pool table in the house).

I play at my community rec center but most of the other players there are in their 70s. Will the rec center management keep the table when they're gone? Who is going to take their place and justify keeping a table? We've already had to fight with the fitness nuts who want to expand the exercise room by eliminating the billiard room.

There aren't any decent public tables within 10 miles (the only good spot closed two years ago), just bar tables that haven't seen new cloth in years. I'm certainly not going to pay $5-7/hour to play on that junk.

I'd like to see pool become popular enough that an owner could operate a quality room.

I was thinking about this very question and for me it comes down to making the sport I love easier to enjoy. right now I have to drive almost 30 minutes each way to even play pool. I can't find any cool t-shirts or hats that are pool related in my local mall. No stores around here carry pool magazines even though they have every other esoteric subject imaginable. It's difficult to find a person that does cue repair. There are very few brick and mortar billiards supply stores. I just think it would be easier in general if there was more mainstream appeal.

I, too, play ONLY at local Pool Halls (there are only 2 within 50 miles) and
losing one or both of those would basically end my Pool Playing days. I used
to play in local League, but the Bangers, Drunks, and Druggies finally got
the best of me this past season. NEVER AGAIN !!!
I have been playing since 1949, with a hiatus from 1980-1995, and have seen
so many great pool halls vanish over those years. However, I see nothing in
it for me if Pool grows, but I do see a great loss if Pool doesn't at least
maintain it's current viability as a recreational sport, at the minimum.

I don't see much infighting. I see a bunch of people who have put a lot of money into the game having their dates shit on because a newcomer can't organize properly.

Many of those people were approached in past and offered the benefit of their experience and knowledge freely only to be bitten by the thing they tried to help. Not hard to see why people are pissed. Lots of people in the industry find ways to work together. You don't get 20 page threads when that happens.
 
When you have access to a great pool room, the rest of the industry really doesn't matter. Only the retail customers that keep spending their money does. Keep them happy, run a few tournaments for the possibility of casual entertainment for the retail crowd and for the players that begin to experience to need to practice and a pool hall can make $$$.

Unless you are in the top 20 pool players in the world, it is difficult to make a living and support a family.

Yet, I follow the tournament results from the Major events and share with players in the pool hall.

I applaud the Promoters that continue to support the Fans and Players with events that payout as soon as the tournament is completed.

Leagues are still the big money maker's for the industry and they rarely account for 20-35% of the fans that attend these events.

IMO, if the leagues folded pool would die a swift death. Leagues accounts for a large percentage of the pool player population. If you were going to introduce a product to pool, who would you show your product to?

the internet, not people. business goes where business is, and thats online. there are more people on AZB at any given time than in any one pool room anywhere(almost) think about it.:)
