Albin Ouschan is new surprise World No.1. After snapping off recent China Open and making W9B final last year
Euros dominate the top 10 with 4 followed by Philippines 3, China 2 and Taiwan 1
I always tot Europe had tonnes of old champs (30somethings, 40somethings) but few killer youngsters :D Looks like I was mistaken

Great to more youngsters (sub 25 years) in the top 20- Albin, Little Ko, Johann Chua, Wang Can

Love his game and he's like really young.

He seems to be a perfect hybrid combination bridging between a good mix of Taiwanese n Philipino style

He's sharp and makes little mistakes, controls his cue ball well without being overly fancy.

Anyone knows if he's a strong money player too ?
Never heard about him playing for dough as i heard a coupla european champions strictly do not gamble like souqet and thorsten.
wonder why thats so anyway ?

I watched him for the first time in the China Open and he played STRONG!

He rarely made a mistake (I don't remember seeing any during the matches I watched) and he played perfect safes, patterns, and position. He kept a "TIGHT" rein on the cue ball and played what I would call "text book" perfect. He reminded me of the style the Taiwanese players use.

If he plays the same way all the time, it will take somebody playing WORLD CHAMPION caliber to beat him.

Aloha.

There are a lot of things that surprise me on that list.

Canada has more players in the World Top 20 than the USA.

Taiwan only having 1 player in the world top 10, and Jun Ling Chang is not even in the top 20.

SVB not in the top 10 in the world despite his US Open points

Kiamco at #5. This is a guy that most people don't really put into that elite level (great player, but most people don't mention him with Ko, SVB, and Dennis), but he seems to grind his way deep into these big events and surprise a lot of people. He is ranked higher than Dennis, SVB, Yu Lung Chang, Niels... I think he might have a lot of people fooled (me being one of them).

****On a side note, they should take those Euro Tour events out of the World Rankings. If you look at those fields they are exclusively European players and are not international fields at all. At least the DCC, US Open, and Turning Stone get a considerable amount of Euros and Asian players entering the events each year. The Euro Tour - Austria, Euro Tour, Slovenia, and Euro Tour, Dutch should not be used for world ranking points, they are not world fields. For that matter the Member Ranking Event - China should not be a ranking event either, it is exclusively Asian players and looks like it had no one from outside of Asia competing in it.****

I saw Albin in the World Juniors back when he was young. You could tell he was being trained and coached into that mentality. He already played a very "professional" style of game with very little emotion. He was outclassed in the skill department at that time by the Taiwanese who tend to peak "very" early, but I saw a lot of emotional control and that very solid fundamental base that could very well lead to what we are now seeing from him.

He was pretty clearly the 3rd most advanced player in the World Juniors that year at that time (and that field included Morra and Klatt), but he was a large step behind the two Taiwanese competitors who were already playing world class professional (not juniors) level pool and would have been a threat to beat anyone in the world in a race to 11 at that time.

I do not think Warren gets enough credit for how strong his game is. He is called a bulldog because there is absolutely no quit in his game. He fires on all cylinders in every match he plays. He plays and then keeps to himself. He is a sleeper so to speak because he isn't flashy but gets the cash consistently. It may be a rumor but I heard several years ago that SVB said that Warren was his toughest opponent gambling.

People on azb saying he is a second tier pro is absurd. I mean he won Derby City 9 ball this year but people seem to forget about who won events in the US unless it is SVB.

Donnie Mills put WK in a coma gambling at Q-Masters during the Open 10 yrs ago or so.

The Filipinos stayed after the match setting up the rack and trying to figure out how Donnie made a ball most every break. The never did. There was a lot of head shaking! ahaha

That's the problem with the WPA list. With no tour and no real infrastructure, the top 20 players in the world is really the top 20 players of those who attend most of these tournaments. So I typically take these lists with a grain of salt, and rarely look at them. I don't mean to denigrate anyone's accomplishment, these tournament are all very tough and it takes a world class player to get into the top 10, but it's far from the most accurate assessment of pro pool pecking order.

The TAR match between Mills and SVB is one of the most amazing things a pool fan can ever see. Highly recommended.
