Alternatives To Ivory; For Inlays, Points, Joint Collars, etc?

Hey Guys :)

I was wondering what you guys think are the best alternatives are for Ivory, as reguards for cue components like, Joint Collars, ferrules, points, other inlays, etc? :)

I had been considering about ivory before, but the cost and the new US Customs laws on ivory products, puts me completely off the idea of going for a cue with genuine ivory in the cue's construction :)

And so, I thought it best to ask you good people which you prefer or recommend as a good alternative? :)

Hey Dave :), how ya doin buddy? :)

I had been thinking of Holly originally, but I thought that it would be worth asking on here, just to gett a better scope of exactly what alternatives there are :)

It looks like Holly is looking to be the best alternative for points and inlays, but I'm wondering what the difference in feel and hit there is, from the various joint collar and ferrule materials, like those mentioned by Mr Hoppe :)

Usually most likey to happen when cue is being prepped for spraying, Raw Holly is a magnet for dust.

As far as color and grain goes, the Elforyn is tough to beat. It looks VERY close to ivory. I'd be surprised if the average cue customer could tell them apart unless there is a very large slab of the stuff. Elforyn can have a slight swirl which doesn't normally occur in ivory.

We have an Elforyn forearm box cue and an Elforyn pointed cue in the works. I've liked the Elforyn so far.

According to some of the posters here, you wouldn't be bothered at customs if this was your personal playing cue. Many people travel with ivory inlayed cues. I think it is the distribution from your cue shop/dealer where you might have some trouble.

However, I have no personal experience with this. I just know what I have read here.
 
I have a stunning Kikel that I bought from Jamie that has six holly points 3 hi 3 lo with a highly figured redheart forearm that has to be seen to be believed! There is no bleeding anywhere on this cue and Dave's work is superb! My avatar is the butt of the cue.
