Jim, I have done business with this gentleman many times. He ships quickly, and is certainly safe to deal with.

Why use aluminum? For a few bucks more you could use nickle silver or sterling silver. I do not know the exact expansion rates but they are less on the better material and they polish up nice. Chris.

Chris,
Never been a fan of silver. I started using aluminum years ago and found they are better for me. I use the nickel every so often, usually customer request. Just a personnal choice.
Thanx to all for the help,
Jim Lee

I use aluminum when someone wants metal rings. I don't like to use aluminum rings as they don't glue well and aren't as shiny as silver. I would much prefer silver but the cost has got so high it would really affect the pricing of my cues as when I use the metal rings they are usually in concert with my rail road track deco-rings which use 15 .060 wide strips also. I don't like nickle-silver what-so-ever.

I think that a lot of people would be surprised at the number of hi-end production cue manufacturers that have switched to alum. rings. Cost difference may be the biggest factor and let's face it, they have to compete with the Chinese. Probably an even greater surprise would be to learn how many 'custom' CMs are now using alum.

I can tell you from personal experience that, depending on the finish you're using, there could be compatibility issues with silver or ni-silv. rings. I have a cue that I built for myself about 10 yrs. ago for bar league play that has a few ni-silv. rings in it. I was still shooting lacquer at that time. Within 1 yr. the lacquer started to react with the silver and the rings turned a lovely shade of green. I've never had an adverse reaction using alum. rings. I very rarely use any form of metal rings in my cues anymore but as a function of my work in building shafts for my largest client, I use the type of metal rings that are dictated by the cue that I'm building a shaft for.

Tap, tap, tap.

Aluminum, $5.50/10
Nickel silver, $10/10

This is not an area where I would choose to save a buck. Most finishes do not adhere to aluminum very well. I see it every day.

Ryan ,
I use a variation of epoxy for sealing. With this strong barrier , I have never had an issue with clear lifting or not sticking in any way.
I know there are many formulas for sealing cues, as I have been thru 85% of them thru the years, but the epoxy really helps in sealing, brightens up veneer colors , makes the black phenolic darker, and gives me a great thin barrier for just that reason with the metal rings.
Just a thought.
Thanx,
Jim Lee

Connecticut Cue Parts has aluminum rings. Check them out. I wish they would stamp nickel-silver. Economical pricing.
