I found a guy who posted a pool cue on a website (not saying where...you scavengers, I haven't picked it up yet). The post reads:

"
Beautiful cue, heritage cherry forearm with Irish linen wrap and decorative inlays.

Solid shaft with new tip.

MUST SELL!!!! "


I saw the pictures and thought it looked familiar, so I asked him the brand name and he replied with.
"I'm not sure. It has a little 4 leaf clover with an "M" in the middle. Not sure the weight, or what kind of tip, just that it's a new tip worth around $15".

He wants $20 for this beautiful McDermott. Am I going to hell if I agree to buy it from him without telling him what he COULD get for it??
 
Oh man, the moral dilemma on this one.

Tough call. No is my short answer - the seller is accountable for his/her own actions.

If you have a serious moral talker up there in your attic, you could pay him more (maybe $100? I don't know what FMV is) and that would be a win win for both.
 
Part of me would take the cue and run...
OTOH I would prolly tell the guy that it is really worth XXX and pay him at least half.

If he chooses to flip you off and try to sell it ofr the full lick, thne he is the one that has to deal with the Karma....

I'll be honest and say I would jump all over this, but anymore I reap what I sow, so I think I would offer him more and tell him the cue is worth a bit more than he is asking.

mILW...the real dilemma is do i run to the site, offer the guy $40 and grab it before ya...jk.

Hey grab it, if you want to offer a lil something extra go for it, but I right it off to +/-... Ive overpayed way too often then got a deal. Time to score one for the hometeam.
 
My father always told me that fair market value is determined by a willing buyer and a willing seller.

When I sell something, I do my best to do my research and find out, NOT what something might be worth in a blue book, but what it has actually been bringing on the market.

Because of that, I feel that it is up to the seller to make the effort to find out what the market is. If they don't, oh well. Realistically, 15-20 minutes on the web these days can give anyone a baseline.

And no, you won't go to hell for this... :-)

There's always the case that even if the guy were to know how much he might be able to get for the cue, that he still just wants to get rid of it as quickly and as smoothly as possible. Remember that the value of a cue is most generally only as good as it is to the owner.
My dad just spent $5,000 on a 4-wheeler, and I was giving him a hard time about spending so much cash on a 'toy' that he uses less than 15 hours a year and his response was "hey, I'm not the one that spent $x,000 on a #$)*ing piece of wood."
It may be that the cue is worth only so much to this guy, so I'd take a chance and let him know up front. Even if he did reconsider and try to get a little more, you'd probably still get a great deal on it, and you'd get two smiley faces to stick on your fridge!

If you want it, buy it. You're still buying a pig in a poke. Who knows if it's straight or warped? I sure can't tell from a photo online. Can you? And it's a McDermott, not a Ginacue. It's not like your stealing something so valuable.
Maybe he got it for free, so he's happy with whatever he gets. You can offer to pay for shipping costs also.

There isn't any shipping because I can drive out to where he is located. That being said, I'm going to look at the cue first. If it looks all dinged up or warped, I won't get it...And I'll post it on here for everyone to see. lol. I'll post a picture of it if I buy.

Even if I didn't like the cue, my wife plays with a McD and she can always use the extra shaft (God...that sounded so wrong....). If the shaft is no good, I could just buy an OB shaft and still come out on top as well....such a dilemma...

I just feel a LITTLE bad, but I guess I'll go with what some of you have said "If he wants to sell it at that price, that's his decision". I know that I'd look up that value of an item before I sold it...Especially if I knew nothing/ very little about it.
 
I would buy it for the price he asks. When I got it in my hands and it was indeed what you think it is and the cue was in good shape, I'd mail him $50 to $100 more, depending on how much it's worth. Johnnyt (Honest Johnny)..wanna buy a watch?

If your on here asking though, you might just wanna follow your own conscience and do what you know is right. Guilt isn't fun nor is bad karma. Enjoy the cue, I'm sure you'll both be happy with the transaction and both sides will come out smellin' like a rose! :thumbup:
 
Good thing you'll get to look at it. If it is in sweet shape (no new shaft needed, etc), maybe flip him an extra $20 and say something casual like "this is a pretty nice cue, it may become my wife's and if I tell her I paid $20 she'll think I was cheap and not like it as much!."

Hell avoided, until your wife really does see it and wants it and says "it's my cue or you'll be humping your fist for a year". :eek:

Your only going to hell when you bring it here and try to resell for 500 bucks rather than using the cue for your playing cue.

Just giving you a hard time my friend. Wish you had been here last weekend, they had "Spath Memorial" tournament at Micheals in Fairfield.

Donny Anderson, was there briefly. He got up threw about 6 balls on the table and preceeded to bank about 5 in row.....
