The players must talk about that before playing. Generally, the looser pay ... or 50/50, I've never seen the looser asking the winner to pay his part.
IMO, you were right.

Where I play, we alway agree ahead of time who will pay the time. I think it's best to split the time. But then again, I don't bet high. Perhaps those who are going for a big hit will disagree. But why have an extra bone of contention after the match is over?

Make your game before you gamble.

If a guy get's that freaked out over $ 30.00 he's a nit and I wouldn't pay any of his time. Playing a smalll time, small minded type is the kind of action I would avoid, that type of action is repulsive to me.

Now if I were playing someone for pocket change as in your situation and the guy was cool I would kick in a few bucks or a couple of beers.
If it were for some serious dough I would do the time and take care of the house.

No, you weren't wrong.

Pool time

Next time make it clear up front who will pay for the time. I don't think you should have to pay his time if you only won $30, but if you won a couple hundred then maybe.

hi,

the other day i played a dude some eight ball and i beat him out of thirty bucks.we played for several hours and my time was 12 dollars.he asked me to pey his time an i said no! he got mad with me,but i told him that i barely won anything to begin with .

was i wrong?should i had pey his time?

Love all the, "no, keep the money" answers. For one thing, you were playing for VERY low stakes....which means that either one of you weren't willing to up the bet (either because of differences in playing ability, lack of cash, whatever). You just played "hours" for free with competition....pay the time, and go have a burger. Who cares if you end up up in the deal. It's twelve bucks, and it would probably get you more action with the guy.

After my Saturday round of golf, I usually buy the first pitcher....even though I just sip on my iced tea. I more times than not win a couple of skins, maybe a greenie or two, and even a team game here and there. I'm up on the deal, and had a good time playing, and enjoyed the competition...don't be a cheapskate, or you'll sound like a guy who wants the winner to pay for their time. Do it without even thinking twice about it. SHEESH. Sorry, if I went off on a tangent. :D

I think the winner playing table time is a classy thing to do, sort of like a walking stick but it doesn't look like charity or pity so much.

Since the money was trivial, the race was probably short and the table time was probably trivial too. To me, it's the casual, just for fun money games that merit paying someone else's time.

However it lacks class to walk up to a pool table and simply expect someone else to pay your time (hi earl lol).

Marty Kyman,would say before a match"you pay your time,I'll pay mine,ever if you beat me out of $100.00." Made you kind of ready to play him.lol

It's your call in the end, but IMO, you should have paid.
1) Marketing - he'll want to play you more in the future;
2) Paybacks - if you were to lose to him in the future, you can have him pay;
3) Karma (if you believe in that) - it will come back to you, one way or another;
4) Free Pool - you were already ahead, got free pool for the night, and still had money left -> even after paying his time.

You didn't bust this guy, so there was no "obligation" to pay, but I would have paid for the reasons above.

I 100% agree, I get so tired of hearing these nitty stories about a few dollars. Just pay the damn time you still won money and he will play you again. If he beats you next time he will pay---its how the world works. Did you really need the extra 12 dollars that bad??????
If you did you should not have been gambling OR you knew you were stealing and you didn't play as good as you should OR he played better and you are bitter he pulled up after only 30 bucks!
Next time just pay the time and save yourself the embarassment of going through public humiliation over 12 dollars

You should use the money you won to invest in some spelling lessons. If there is a chance you could play him again you might have considered paying half of his time.

You know,everyone on this post understands what happened,every if some of us don't spell so good .You need to spend some money on the book"How to win friends and influence people."

No, I wouldn't. It brings up another question, though. When I was learning to play in NY, it was pretty much assumed that the loser of the set paid the time for both players. I prefer this overall, although it made it a little tough on the counter guy because we were always starting/stopping the clock.

I have since relocated to PA, and table time doesn't enter into negotiations. Is that the case for most parts of the country?

If I like the person or it's not a hate-match, I would personally always pay the time in that situation. All comes down to if you're trying to make a living playing or you're gambling because you like to gamble, in my opinion. If you're trying to make the nut for the day, which a lot of pool players do -- don't pay the time. If you want to keep a happy gambling sucker happy, pay the time, his half is only a few bucks. Think of it like a "comp" at a casino. Never know... he may go-off next time if he likes your actions.
