Kay, it was a pleasure meeting you down in Jacksonville. For anyone who doesn't know, Kay was there longer hours than anyone else and I saw that she ran a great amateur event despite the conditions of the equipment. As for the equipment she had to work with, they were equivalent to what you would find in a dive bar, and there was nothing Kay could do about it. To my knowledge, Predator had nothing to do with that either, since I saw someone bring them up. Dragon Promotions had a table sponsor, and I would think that they could have done something to help the situation but didn't for whatever reason.
I noticed that the ref waited until Saturday to pick on Corey Deuel about his break, when at no time was it stated that three balls had to make it completely past the side pocket. If not for that, I believe he would have won. I'm getting pretty tired of hearing people complain about Corey's soft break when they're just mad that he's perfected a technique that they haven't been able to copy, and we know you've tried. I compare it to jumping. Just because some people can't jump shouldn't mean it should be barred from being used by others.[/rant]
One thing that always astounds me is the number of people who don't turn their mobile phones to vibrate or off, but rather keep the ringer volume turned up. Then when the phone rings, they stare at it in astonishment instead of silencing the darn thing. This is rude and distracting to the players and referees. The first time it happens, the rude glares you receive should be hint enough to turn it off, and for everyone else to make sure they have done the same. It was unnecessarily prevalent this weekend, and I hope the guilt parties realise what clowns they are for disturbing a professional sporting event.
I liked the change of venue. The lighting was much better, as was the seating. I remember last year hardly being able to see since I am shorter than most, whereas this year there were bleachers so everyone could sit and enjoy the matches. It was also more convenient for some players who needed a room and could stay in the hotel. There were people who complained about paying for the parking, but there was a free lot right next to the hotel available to everyone and had plenty of space as I parked there every day/night. As I understand it, this event will be held here in the future, which I think is a welcome change.
By the way, there was an amazing female player from Spain who finished in every event she played in. I forgot her name, but I'm sure someone could post it, and her finishes, as she will be someone to look out for.
I don't understand the lack of quality equipment in the amateur event, which made it painful to watch so I didn't. I hope a lesson was learned and we'll see a change in future tournaments. However, from a spectator's point of view, I enjoyed this tournament very much, and I look forward to attending next year.
