Gee,

4 American, 7 Taiwanese, and 5 Pinoys advanced to 32. That's 16 out of 32!
It seems that the world pool is dominated by these 3 countries.

Hmmmm. Eleven of the last thirty two are European. It speaks volumes about the strength and depth of the Eurotour. Just two of the last thirty two are American, which to me, is a big disappointment. Let's give credit where it is due.

wonder what the cumulative population of the euro countries is vs tpe, phi and usa...

Don't know about the Asian countries, but the population of Europe is about 800 million and the population of America is between 300 and 400 million.

Taiwan's population is apprx 22mm and the PHI is apprx 85MM.

So much for my theory of a relashonship between population of areas/countries where pool is "popular" and # of participants remaining in what is prolly the closest thing to a "world" tourney.

Wonder what led to Taiwan and Phillipine pool dominance??

We got Corey and Shane. That's it. Still an improvement over last year, when we had none at this point.

I totally agree!!! Couldn't agree more. European players are here only to make the Taiwanese, Americans and Pinoys look good

For the Philippines, it's part of the gambling culture. It was never play for just the fun of it. It's all about getting better, so you can gamble.

As for the rest of Asia, 9-ball, 8-ball and some other billiards disciplines are part of the Asian Olympics.

True, but I guess he was referring to individual country.

Last 16

This is how it looks after the smoke of the battle in the last 32 was cleared:

Philippines -- 4
Chinese Taipei -- 2
England -- 2
USA -- 1
Japan -- 1
Russia -- 1
Netherlands -- 1
Hungary -- 1
Germany -- 1
Canada -- 1
Finland -- 1

That means: 7 Asians, 7 Europeans and 2 North Americans for last 16.

Last 8 had 4 Asians and 4 Europeans

Philippines - 3
England - 2
Chinese Taipei - 1
Hungary - 1
Finland - 1

Last 4 has 3 Europeans and 1 Asian

England - 2
Hungary - 1
Philippines - 1

Finals was Asian vs European

England - 1
Philippines - 1

Finally won by a European.

WPA world ranking points

The Taiwanese men rank high on the WPA mens world ranking and the Taiwanese and Chinese women rank highly in the women's world ranking but because of their lack of sponsorship and economic situation and the low prize moneys in pool tournaments they tend to stay around home and play the Asian circuits. In light of the draw shouldn't the WPA reassess their point system for tournaments that don't get the top players? Some North American tournaments are billed as majors and get much more points than the Asian ones even though they may not have a strong draw.

I'm Taiwanese living in Shanghai now but you are close, Taiwan has a population of 23 million but the popularity in pool arise from a few players making it to the top back in the 90's. Zhao Feng Bang is one of them. After him came Yang Ching Shuen. Now they have a very good mentoring and coaching system. I'm certain the Philippines has a similar situation.

Beyond numbers and countries represented, does anybody know the tv schedule?
Channel(s)?
Time?
Format?

Thanks!!
