American Straight Pool Championship - Oct 19th to 23rd *free* live streaming

... bobby c said in the commentary that filler runs 200 (and stops there) on a daily basis playing on 4 1/8 pockets. that's just discouraging to hear about lol
But didn't Joshua contradict that when he was commentating the next match? I thought he said he never goes beyond 100 (or 125?) in practice, because that's the length of most games in tournaments.

Edit -- I checked. Near the end of the second rack of the Lechner/Souquet match, Filler said he stops at 100 when practicing straight pool, then goes on to practice other things.

Much respect to us long in the tooth guys and everyones comments here... but I'm telling ya, you put SVB, Alex, Dennis, Filler, Shaw, etc... on those old school 5" and bigger pockets and easier tables, I don't care what field from the 80's, 40's, 27's, 95'ers, it doesn't matter, the cats today will crush them once it's said and done, all of them. Today's athletes, in every single sport period, are superior to yesterday's. This is complete and utter fact. Just quit it man, grab a pedialyte, an enjoy.
as it should be. Today, high school athletes do what would have been Olympic records of old. I would hope the players are getting better. If not there is something wrong.

Today's players would run HUGE packages on those older bucket tables.
That is my thought also
I agree....a couple years ago, a friend said Greenleaf and Mosconi would kill the modern players...
...told him....they had a bunch of thousand point matches back then...in blocks of 250..
...so how come Appleton’s 200 is the highest competitive run in history...on smaller pockets?

A pool player/commentator exaggerating the truth? Get out of town!
Well, I don't think Bobby just made up what he said -- probably a matter of some wires getting crossed somehow. One possibility is that Filler actually did practice to higher runs years ago but not currently.

Wouldn't the faster cloth and better quality balls play a big role in allowing today's players to run so many balls? It just seems as though the cloth and balls allow them to get better spreads and open the balls more on shallow break shots.

Though, I have noticed a big difference in the standard over the last 15 years though. I seem to remember in the mid 2000's, John Schmidt ran something like 168 at the Derby and or a 170ish ball run was the biggest we saw for a long time. Then Darren ran 200 and out in 2013 and it seemingly opened the flood gates for 200+ ball runs in high run challenges and extended runs.

yes, this is true for all sports, except some track and field disciplines where steroid records from the 80's still stands, like florence griffiths joyner's..

Stu, as I pointed out in another thread earlier this year, the WPA didn't exist until 1987, North America (BCA) didn't join it until 1990, their first world event was in 1990 (9-Ball), and their first sanctioned straight pool event was in 2006. You then suggested that maybe the pre-WPA events that are widely recognized as world championships should be called "fully sanctioned" rather than WPA sanctioned.
Yeah, I tend to forget this historical point. Fully sanctioned would have been better.

I fear I might forget again at some point. The good old days are becoming more and more distant and obscure.

Thanks for the correction.

Watching the other stream it sounds like some stuff went down and Earl maybe got disqualified out of the tournament. Any idea what’s going on?
Maybe he called the wrong pocket again and didn't have that clown Leyman to bail him out this time.

Earl shoved and hit HL

Seems he was disturbed he could hear Hunter talking a table away while he was shooting.

True, most all records eventually get broken, assuming the particular sport doesn’t become obsolete (are they still setting records in badminton & croquet ?), which might have something to do with population increase. More people = more stand-out exceptionals. As the genetic pool gets larger, the more likely are mutations that produce super-human athletic examples.

I wonder how the modern guys would play wearing tuxedos, suits and ties with all ball fouls.
