Has anyone tried ammonia treated shaft wood?
Using ammonia to reset the position of the wood, like they do in making profiled laminated beams.
Thanks for any replies or info offered.

I use ammonia for dent removal and sometimes for cleaning a shaft.

they do not use ammonia to bend wood


they use anahydrous ammonia....a very deadly and dangerous gas...anahydrous means without water....regular ammonia at the store has water in it...just like hydrogen peroxide is a weaker solution than real industrial

Anhydrous Ammonia will kill you dead @ 5000ppm

Well I'm certainly no chemist and have no desire to be one. I just know that I buy it in half gallon jugs at the grocery store and with it I can steam most dents out in 10-15 sec. or so and clean shafts much better than water or alcohol.

I have used ammonia solution to form woods for making my model planes.
Commercial users use the anhydrous ammonia as it works quicker.
The water solution ammonia still works on plywood and balsa, just takes alot longer to dry out.
So I am going to test on some bent maple shafts, and see what happens.
You are correct about the dangers of anhydrous ammonia, along with ammonia solution.
Caution is always better than trying to find a cure.

It does a great job on gophers in their holes .... and a few days later the grass is way greener too :thumbup:

It is dangerous stuff, it kills one or two people here every year it seems.

I love the smell of anhydrous amonia in the morning.

H2S is much better lol....

you swear someone farted and then your dead lol.....


iv'e worked in the mobile bay field offshore and had to sleep with a scba breathing apparatus right next to me incase the H2S alarms went off.....I did not feel comfortable lol

i didn't know it would work with reg ammonia....thanks for the info...let me know about your results.

I had mentioned this awhile back and never got any replies...glad you brought the idea up again....

It would be great to be able to repair bent shafts....how many nice older cues have we all seen with shafts in real bad shape....that would be a very nice thing to be able to offer customers. Even if it only worked half assed it would be better than nothing.

The only other thing I know of to bend wood is HOT LINSEED OIL, and of course steam...but not one of us is going to be steaming any wood for obvious reasons....does anyone know of anyone that has tried the linseed oil and had any success?

Don't know if it would stay straight if you were successful. I would think steam from water alone would work just as good. Never tried it though, always thought if it moved it was always meant to be that way.
 
Hahaha, I have a buddy like that. I swear to God, I have no idea what he eats, buts its toxic.

its the same stuff lol H2S (hydrogen disulfide)

manure, septic tanks, old wet drywall and all sorts of stuff gives off that gas....just in very very small amounts....I believe its deadly at something like 100ppm if im not mistaken...you smell it at around 5ppm and by 20-40 ppm you lose smell...at 50+ you lose consciousness and thats game over brother

you smell it around papermills mostly its the sulfer that smells like the rotten eggs lol

the bad thing about that stuff in places like mobile bay is that if something bad happeded and you had to jump off the platform....H2S is soluble in water and its heavier than air so your double fu*d
