Amsterdam Hosts World Pool Masters

AMSTERDAM—This quiet village is preparing for three exciting days.
Starting today, the vacation town of Egmond Aan Zee will host the 2007 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters.

This quaint area caters to a lot of foreigners like Germans and other Europeans, but is also a popular location for the locals.

It is not the first time that the Hotel Zuiderduin will host a major billiards event, having hosted the Masters four times in the past and the Mosconi Cup once.

This tournament brings together 16 invited players from all over the globe to compete in this knockout format tournament. Each match will be played in a race-to-eight, alternate break format with a 45-second shot clock.

The prize fund totals $62,000, with the winner pocketing $20,000, while first-round losers take home $1,500.

Filipino Ronnie Alcano, the current World Pool champion, is participating for the very first time. And he can’t wait to get things started.
“Gusto ko ang format na ganito,” said Alcano.

He thrives in pressure situations. Other players prefer the double knockout system, but he relishes the fact that just one loss and you pack your bag.
Alcano is deadset on performing well in this tournament that he flew in three full days before the event.

Entering the tournament as the favorite is five-time winner Ralf Souquet, but the field this year seems the strongest ever.

Also, for only the second time in its 16-year history, a woman, Jasmin Ouschan, is one of the featured players and it will be interesting to see her perform against the men on the big stage.

The competition, which is once again staged at the Hotel Zuiderduin, Egmond aan Zee, Holland, will be held from Friday, June 8 to Sunday, June 10 and features 16 of the best players in the world.

This three-day tournament, which is one of the most prestigious in the pool calendar, includes current World Champion Ronnie Alcano (Philippines), five-time Masters winner Ralf Souquet (Germany) and snooker star Tony Drago (Malta).

The rest of the line up is as follows: David Alcaide (Spain), Tyler Edey (Canada), Thomas Engert (Germany), Niels Feijen (Holand), Pat Holtz (Scotland), Li He-wen (China), Imran Majid (England), Naoyuki Oi (Japan), Oliver Ortmann (Germany), Jasmin Ouschan (Austria), Fabio Petroni (Italy), Nick van den Berg (Holland), Wu Chia-ching (Chinese Taipei).

Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan has joined the list of confirmed players competing in the upcoming Turning Stone Classic IX event.., Jasmin won the BCA Open 9-Ball Championship in 2006 and placed third behind Allison Fisher and Karen Corr at the BCA Open 9-Ball Championship in 2007.., Last April, Jasmin won the first annual MBC ESPN Women's World Pool Cup played in Seoul, Korea and was runner-up at the WPBA San Diego Classic to Kelly Fisher.., Jasmin is a two-time Women’s European Champion, competes regulary with the men of the European Pocket Billiard Federation on the EuroTour and said, "my goal is to be one of the best players in the world and also to try to challenge the best male players in the world".

haha. I think I'm in love with Jasmin. Someone slap a restraining order on me :D I seriously want her to win this. I know it's goofy but I wish it were straight pool, which she calls her "secret love". Then again, with Thomas Engert in there maybe not. Anyway she's got a chance.

Would you just look at that picture. And... she can run out too. Get the f$%& outta here! What a combo. I'm forty, and feel like a perv just watchin' her play.
 
If a chick can run 125 (I think that's the right figure) in straight pool I think I'm in love even if she's not so young and hot.

She seems very fierce though. Maybe that's just her game face.

"Hey honey, wanna go to the pool hall and hit 'em around?"
"no, we are going to the mall today for new leather boots."
"but isn't the mall closed today?"

Jasmin did 75 and out in the womens semifinal of the European Championship this year, then 76 and out in the final after she scratched on the openingshot. She is a killer in straight pool! Leave her a open table and you can just unscrew your cue ;)

When she finished 17th in the Eurotour, (her best finish in the Eurotour yet), she played Nick van den Berg and lost 9 - 7 I believe. (Correct me if I am wrong). Guess she is looking forward to get a rematch here!

Also kind of funny, the owner of the poolhall where Nick vd Berg is playing has promised Jasmin 20 000 $ if she wins the World Pool Masters!!!

No americans in the field! True, and very sad. But the reason is that the World Pool Masters is an invitational tournament, based on results in major leagues and World Championships. Since the US performed very poorly in the 9-ball WC and didn't even send any players to the 8-ball WC, (A DISGRACE) I guess that's the reason why there is no Americans in the field...

However, winning a major event like US Open should get you an invitation, IMO.
 
I would be one that might never leave Amsterdam. Was there a couple of years ago and loved it- a must-see, when in Europe.

Roy, Come on now. You mean the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship and the rest of the U.S. Championships mean that little? I think there were a few non-Americans in those fields.

While there may be some apathy on some Americans part because our players aren't subsidized by the U.S. Government and maybe their expenses would have been a little too high to justify participating.

The World 10 Ball Championship was an invitational and a lot of non-Americans were invited if I am not mistaken.

I normally don't get involved in these type of discussions and it is more a curiosity than anything else, ITHINK :D But how many Americans were invited to the 8 ball WC?

BTW, what is the definition of "results in major leagues"?

Is it possible that there is a little bit of anti-Americanism spreading? If so, am I'm leaving myself and the rest of us wide open but from a non-yank without any extra spite, why is it happening in pool?

I would seriously like to hear you honest input. PM if you want or right here in the open is good for me. Either way. If you are not close enough to the World Pool Masters and the powers that make these decisions I will appreciate your candor there as well.

(Perhaps you didn't read my post good enough on purpose, but "twisted" my words so it would look like there is a lot of anti-American activity on this forum) :p

But it wasn't too expensive for players from for example England? They have absolutely no government sponsor at all. In fact, at the European Championship this year the UK players had to pay ALL their expenses out of their own pocket, for a tournament with NO pricemoney. Still Darren Appleton travelled to Dubai and played qualifers to get into the WC. Not all European countries have government sponsors, though it looks like the americans believe that the European players have unlimited support from their countries...

Yes, the World 10-ball Championship had a lot of non-americans in the field. Of course it did. Would it been a World Championship with only Americans in the field? :rolleyes:

I am not a part of the Matchroom Sports, in fact I also said "I guess this is the reason why..." so don't know what they mean is a major league. However, I think I am quite updated about pool in the world, and I can't find any american ranking of big tournaments or leagues. In Europe, for example, we have more than 700 players on a ranking based on the results on the Eurotour. The top players get invited to World Championships, World Pool Master, Mosconi Cup...

I am not close to the World Pool Masters at all. I am just a big fan of pool, especially great characters like your american heros Earl Strickland and Kieth McCready. I think it is a shame that no Americans was invited for this event, as I said in my last post regarding the US Open... (However, for all we know, maybe some Americans actually got invited, but turned the invitation down just like they did for the World Pool Championship??? :confused:

I was thinking that with the World Pool Masters tournament perhaps Holland had some issues with the Red, White and Blue.

No biggee. Just curious. Maybe I will see you at DCC. If I find out who Walt is, I will bring him too. :D

The World Pool Masters is not taking place in Amsterdam. It is taking place in a garbage tip lookalike called Egmond-an-Zee, near Alkmaar, more than 70 kms from Amsterdam.

It's not Holland who is organizing the event, but Matchroom Sports.

However, I do believe they have an issue with the Red, White and Blue. Norway aren't invited either?!!! :eek:

By the way, if you see Walt please bring him to DCC :)

Unfortunately, from the way he talks, I have a feeling that $500 is not enough for him to consider betting. Maybe some of that is braggin and since I don't know who he is I can't assure you that he is.

But if I do identify him and get him to DCC I would love to see the two of you matched up.
