Hi all,
I had kind of an interesting thing happen recently on Ebay. I was looking at a Titlist conversion that I thought might be a Rambow (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190261035821&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123). The auction didn't have much traffic and I got the cue for the opening bid. The cue wasn't exactly what I expected when I received it. There were large circles inlaid on the butt. I could tell from the pics that they weren't exactly lined up, but I was hoping that it was just camera distortion. The cue came in and the first thing I saw was that the inlays that were pictured were only one one side of the butt. They weren't ivory, but look to be a paste or maybe even a thick paint. The Hoppe ring is synthetic and not ivory.
The interesting thing was that the cue seemed to be very playable and has obviously been reworked to someone's specs. It has a linen wrap, and has been taken down considerably from the original dimensions. It still has the old Brunswick ferrule that is black and white. It has a red pad under the tip. All the rework appears to be old. After playing a couple of games with it, I think that someone has put those on the cue to act as indicators like Meucci has with their dotted shafts, so you always know which way to hold the cue. One way or the other, it just didn't say "Rambow" to me anymore, but that I'd simply picked up a Titlist at a fair price. The seller got a good feedback as they made no claims about anything being other than a "vintage cue".
This morning, I got an interesting email from the seller. Here's what it said...
Hello, I just wanted to tell you something I found out. The cue that you got, was 1 of 3 that my Dad obtained at the same time from a friend of his that passed away. Come to find out, 1 that we were getting ready to list belonged to pool player Billy Burge aka "Cornbread Red", he is in the One-Pocket Hall of Fame. The reason I am telling you this is; it is very possible that your stick along with the other 1 we have, were his also. All of the tips seem to be a red tip, medium with a red baffle. Just thought you might be interested to know. If I find out anything else I will let you know. Thank you Brenda
Anyone remember Red using a stick that looked like this one? I remember a couple that he used, but not this one. Wouldn't it be nice to get an occasional deal in this day and age? One way or the other, I still think I got a nice deal on the cue even if it's just a nice old Brunswick!
