After many failed attempts (failed applications), I finally have accepted a job in Anchorage. When I left active duty in 1994, Montana had a draw that I couldn't resist. I loaded my car and hit the road. Alaska has had a similar draw for about 10 years. But now that I'm slightly more of an adult, I chose to find a job before heading that direction. My persistence has paid off.
So, what is the pool scene like there? On my budget, it looks like it will be impossible to have a table at home. Nonetheless, I may bring my antique 9-footer and my 10-foot Anniversary. Thoughts? At the very least, I figure I could work on restoring or refurbishing them, although both are suitable for playing on at present. My move is funded, so it wouldn't cost me extra to bring them....
Any other thoughts or bits of advice?

Anchorage used to have easily nicest pool hall I've ever been too IMO. But the couple split and the business went with it. I'm told one of the two tried to reopen at a new location but the expenses of fire prevention systems were making if difficult. I believe there are a few smaller places to play, but nothing fabulous. There were a handful of serious players also, but this was ten years ago. Haven't been back since then.

Sue re-opened the Palace Billiards a long while back;)
 
The new Palace is smaller then the ones of old, but has 6- 9' diamonds, 4 diamond bar boxes and the golf table. Anchorage is one of those towns that due to very long winters, indoor activities are big. There are a ton of b players and several a players. There are a couple other pool halls too. Minnesota which is kind of a kids hangout, as I was leaving state Jindo, the owner was trying to get a beer and wine license. That will spell trouble. Its cleaned up a lot over the years, but it can still draw a rowdy bunch of kids. The other pool hall Beluga Billiards. Not a bad room per say, but the tables are junk. Its better than nothing, but thats about all. Stick to the Palace, theres still some action to be had in town, but nothing like there used to be. If you like leagues youll like Anchorage. From in house to traveling, handicapped to even matches. BCA, APA, VNEA.... theres a lot of leagues.

I always enjoy listening to mark griffins stories on podcasts of his times in Alaska' Justin is always hushing him and changing the subject when mark gets on talking about back home tangent.:mad:
