Playing snooker gives you firm hands and helps to build character. It is the ideal recreation for dedicated nuns.

Luigi Barbarito...I remember that guy!....

he was always messin with Mr. Cotter!:D

One of the merits of 9-ball is that, if a guy plays 9-ball a lot, he rarely will have to be concerned about living up to the low personal standards he has set for himself.:)

I play quite a few different games, one pocket 9-ball 10-ball, 8-ball and I do play a good bit of snooker as well. 9-ball is a bit better to play with the general mass of bangers and week end warriors. It is easy yet requires some skill to be consistantly a winner and the weight varitions for making the game fair are less confusing which is a big merit for 9-ball.

In saying that, I like other games more, One pocket is a game I loathe to like(and yes that's what I meant) because of it's complxity. And as for snooker it is probably one of my favorites.

What about those who chose the easier games?

The allure is that it's (initially) a simpler game, and thus easier to learn and play. It's faster than 1-h. Easier than snooker. Less strategy than 8-ball. Less complicated than straight. It's perfect for a a tournament format. You can luck 9 balls in and win.

That being said, you still have to be a great player to be a champion in 9-ball, as there are certain skills the other games don't necessarily require. Such as, many long distance position routes, loads of specialty shots, monster breaking under control, kicking to win, and superior shot making.

Other games are challenging on different levels, but 9-ball does have its redeming qualities.

ALSO......as a teenager.....9-BALL....feeds the testosterone rich male, as his balls are flying off the tables, hitting waLLs, gLasses and too many times, your oponnent.....or the unlucky....someone close by. It teachs us how to tear cloth and why dancing on rag covered slate can be slippery. We also learn how to break maple at a young age and whack dents in formica. We then settle down, make our first score, then do it all over again and again, each time with a little less hyperactivity and damage...thus minimizing the chances our oponnent will visit the hospital and the cleaning crew won't have to be called once we exit.:D

Excellent post. Nailed the issues.

However, I do dispute that 9 Ball is meaningfully simpler than most other major games. It has aspects that are simpler and those that are more difficult.

But Mosconi ran over 37 racks in a row of 14 balls each playing straight pool. I know of no such achievement in the history of 9 Ball.

And I would suggest asking Jeremy Jones if he thinks 9 Ball is a simple game.

Personally, I think that pro pool is in the doldrums now and 9 Ball is the flagship game...so there is a LOT of scape goating going on.

No disrespect to any of the major games...it's just that they are DIFFERENT...including being more difficult in some aspects and less so in others. On balance, NONE of the major games is a cinch for any living human.

YEAH 9-BALL IS EASY JUST 1 BREAK & RUN AFTER ANOTHER IT'S SOOOO EASY. WHAT PLANET IS THIS HAPPENING ON? WHATS EASY...SHOOTING THE BALLS IN ORDER, AS OPPOSED TO SOLIDS OR STRIPES? OR MAYBE A RED THEN A NUMBERED BALL, NOW THATS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. HOW ABOUT ANY BALL IN ANY HOLE, THEN USE THE LAST BALL TO BREAK THE NEXT RACK, NOW THATS SUPER HARD TO UNDERSTAND. LETS NOT FORGET, I HAVE ONE HOLE YOU HAVE THE OTHER, HOW CAN I BE EXPECTED TO REMEMBER THAT? All of these games are hard. I guess the guys that are posting that 9-ball is easy are just taking a break from 1 of their multiple break & run sessions. WISH THEY WOULD POST THE VIDEOS!!!!

i actually think 9 ball more resembles and teaches you about life more than anything else. no matter how much you think you're the favorite you might still end up the loser. snooker on the other hand in my opinion seems to me to make it acceptable to miss. it's so hard nobody really expects themselves or anyone else to do it well.
