Annoying Act!

I played in a local tournament the other day and I was matched up with a pretty good player. The game was nine ball and I was on the hill. My opponent left me an open table with about 5 balls left. As I started to run out, the guy starts packing his cue away. Of course, I see this out of the corner of my eye, but I don't say anything. I ended up running out, but found his actions very annoying. To top it off, he doesn't shake my hand. I'm thinking to myself "what a jerk" and blow it off. Why do people do this? Should I have asked if he forfeited when he packed up?

the weekly tournys we have here if you break down your cue without telling the other player that your gonna change a shaft or something its a forfiet. we use that rule to avoid just such a thing , and we have 1 player that NEVER shakes anyones hand win lose or draw and most people dont like the guy. Mark it up and GRATS on your win.

It happens, I have done it once, in a tournament, broke down my cue, because it was the finals, race to 4, and well i got smoked 4-0, and when he had 2 balls left i just broke down my cue and shook his hand, and just said, nice game.

I wasnt trying to be rude, but the guy had just ran 3 racks on me lol. And i kinda knew my chances of winning was moot.

As for other people doing it when thier opponent is like in the middle of a rack, or something, i dunno. Its almost too early to tell, unless the person thier playing against is just running out from everywhere.

But yea, i see alot of KIDS, they get so mad and think thier going to lose so they start to pack thier stuff, and low n behold the other guy miss's.

And i always try to tell kids, who get all pissy when they miss and leave 3 or 4 balls on the table, dont get so mad, anything can happen. EVEN THE PROS MISS !!!!!!

LOL.. I just had this happen to me on Sunday. Making a comeback, I get hill hill, and as I'm shooting a very tough nine, my opponent- just left of my shot(peripheral view) bounces his cue up and down like crazy while I'm down on the ball. I notice this, and know that this is something to expect from this type of guy, but I decide to try to fade it, and I still stay down on the shot. Wrong answer.. I should have got up, and got back down again. That little lapse in concentration was enough to make me overcut the nine just barely down the rail, and sit in the pocket. I shook his hand, and said ____, please don't do that again when were playing. He instantly said, "You shouldn't be looking at cues when you're shooting!" HMMM... I never said anything about a cue!- obvious he was very conscious about doing it. Funny thing is, that a local guy told me he always pulls that crap- but anyhow- On the same vein, get up and feel comfortable. More often than not, the person is going to feel embarrassed by his/her actions, and be very still/quiet. The person I named would have done it again, but I tried to pull the trigger to avoid all of that. Good post!

funny thing...

I had something funny happen to me a few weeks ago during my weekly 8-ball league. I was playing this guy and we were both on the 8-ball. Anyway he shot the 8-ball and left it hanging in the pocket. I got up to shoot and he came over and shook my hand, so I sat back down. He then waits a few minutes and looks and me and says "Well, aren't you going to take the shot?".
Was I wrong in assuming he gave me the game when he shook my hang?

I would have assumed the game was over. Another thing that has happened to me is when I'm call the 8 ball in a certain pocket. My opponent will say "Good Shot" before I even shoot it. Sharks!!

The next time your opponet starts to break down while you are shooting, simply stand up and offer your hand. They ususally will shake hands and give it to you rather than facing the confrontation or admitting they got caught acting like a loser or brat.

If someone breaks their cue down before you are shooting the money ball, immediately get up from the shot and rake balls in the hole with your cue. Smile as you approach him and try to shake his hand. If he starts arguing with you, saying that the game was not over, act slightly surprised and say "I thought you knew that if you unscrew, it means you are conceding". If he starts arguing even more, tell him that it's a very common and well known rule that was implemented in the game because unscrewing your cue before or while someone is shooting is a well known distraction technique. Usually this will shut them up, and if there are people around at the time, most of them will side with you on this. No matter what, and I mean no matter WHAT, do NOT shoot those balls if you are dumb enough to not rake them off the table. Arguments shatter your concentration, and your percentages go way down. There is one exception to everything I said above. If the shot is a hanger, and not even of the slightest difficulty, then don't rake the balls. Do all of what I said above only if the shot is at least slightly difficult.

Tho, in some places, that might get you smacked! If you really wanna do it right, do all the above...unscrew your stick too, but leave the balls undisturbed . Big smile now, go over, stick out the hand for a shake and say 'good game'. Then (excellent, btw!), 'If he starts arguing with you, saying that the game was not over, act slightly surprised and say "I thought you knew that if you unscrew, it means you are conceding". If he starts arguing even more, tell him that it's a very common and well known rule that was implemented in the game because unscrewing your cue before or while someone is shooting is a well known distraction technique."

Don't forget to ask the always important, " D'ya wanna bet some more (or $5, $10, $100...) from here?"

On our league we have a "butthead report" system. Basically it is somthing that you can tell the league office about without having to write the person up. Things like not shaking hands and such, things that are two minor for a unsportsmanship write up but are still significant for you to want to mention it elsewhere (like here for example :D).

I beleive I filled this out for an opposing bar in the past who the owner of the bar was on the team, after stating multiple times that the table was unlevel and the opposing team even acknowledging that I said it nothing was done. Also the same guy would not open the table for his own team to practice because he didnt want people to play on it for free. Although league rules stated it should have been opened. This is somthing that his own team has to put up with whenever they play home. So since I am all for fairness on all sides I filled out the butthead report on him.

On the other hand our league also has a "Good Sport report" system which I have filled out numerous times.

I called someone on this once in a VNEA league I was playing in. It was the last game in a round that could have gone to either team based on who won. I'm shooting a hard shot on the eight and my opponent walks past the table unscrewing his stick on the way to his case. Normally I wouldn't have called him on it, but the team really needed the round as it was late in the season and we were right in the thick of it for first place. Combined with the fact that the shot WAS diffcult and relying on the rules was a certainty, I decided to call the forfeit.

The nice thing is that the guy was more upset with the fact that he did not know that the league used that rule than that I called the foul, even said he would have done the same thing, and really did not do it with the intent of sharking me.
