Annoying Teammates

I'm surprised that your skill on the table hasn't shut them up. Are they friends of yours? If not, then maybe you should quit the team.

On my team, I have a couple of teammates who cannot stop talking about what shot they like or would take if they were shooting. Yes, it still bugs me, but I think that it's simply their nature, and in the end, back and forth discussion is a learning tool for them. I like to think they absorb something I have to say once in a while.

Fred

They actually are friends of mine. They are just poolhall friends, however. I met them at the poolhall and always see them at a poolhall or bar, wherever we are playing. I went to Vegas with them last season. They hired me on their team as a 'ringer', or whatever they wanna call it.

Here is a funny little story that happened in Las Vegas this past May. This will give you an idea of how one of them thinks. In our first round, we drew this very strong team from Canada. My team captain puts me up first, my rack. The guy breaks and runs out. Next time it's my break, and I break dry. My opponent runs out. When I play again, its my opponents break, he breaks and runs out. Same thing again, I try to break from where the guys who are making balls are breaking, but I break dry again. Opponent runs a few balls, freezes me behind the 8-ball, I have to kick, and I make a good hit. My opponet runs out from there. Heres the funny part, is my team got drilled pretty fast by these guys, I think we lost like 10-5 or something like that. Anyways, one of my teammates, who is one of the critical ones, he managed to pull off two wins. They were lucky wins, also. My teammate would run a few balls, hook himself, then his opponent would uncharacteristically run a few balls and then miss, and my teammate got out. Well he was gloating about his two wins for a long time. Right after that match, he didn't mention my losses. But later on, he is talking to someone else about how our team is doing, and I am standing near him, and he gestures towards me and says "this guy couldn't even win a single game", and not in a joking manner. I insulted him back, but that's the type of shit I deal with. He was giving me crap, and the only chance I got in that match was one kick shot. LOL

I just appreciate a team member who will show up every week. I had to come up with a sub one night. The sub dumped every game, it cost us four rounds in a bca points league. Guess how rounds we were out of first place when the league was finished. Most league players are annoying because half way through the night they are so shit faced its amazing they are able to drive home without running off the road. I recommend not only quitting the team but quitting league play completely. Use the time to prepare for a regional tour event. That's just my opinion, do what makes you happy.

League teammates..

I've got almost the same problem. One particular teammate of mine, who is a decent shot, pretty much refuses to take heed to any advice given to him in a time-out (yes, APA). He will try to make an easy shot with a hard leave, like BIH for a straight-in shot to the corner and _draw_ back for a side shot, instead of an easy natural leave off of a rail. I'd say a majority of the time it will fail, but the times it doesn't just kill me because he keeps thinking he's done the right thing. Apparently he's been told this by other people, but that old dog just won't change his ways (since they obviously work *cough*). Unfortunately it gets worse.. his son is on the team, a slightly less decent shooter, and even though he'll complain about his dad's suggestions, etc, he'll do the same damn thing. It's infuriating.. what's worse is they consider me a better player (sometimes only slightly) after not even 2 years of playing, but they won't listen to a damn thing I say.

Same thing, too.. I say if you think I'm wrong in how I play, why not play me for money? After all, the father just caught up to my rating.

Either way, I'm leaving that team.. sucks spending 6pm-11pm in a bar just to play like 6 games of 8-ball.

Personally I think advice should be asked for and never given unsoliceted.
As for team mates that get on my nerve.

This fall I'm putting a team together of my choosing so I'll only have myself to blame if that happens. I've spent the last 2 years playing with people that get on my nerves and I've had enough. teammates are supposed to help you not hinder you. I'm also tired of playing with people that don't share my drive when it comes to pool. Showing up league night 5 minutes before it's time to play after not practicing all week isn't much of a recipe for success.

League players LOL!

This is going to sound hypocritical I know, but ill tell you I run and 8 ball league up front. I have been playing pool since I was 16 usually for money or the occasional tourney, I ended up in a league because my dad likes to play and I didn’t want him hanging around the rooms where I gamble. Short story long the guy running the league quit after 4yrs and I didn’t want to lose father son night so I took over. The players in my league are just funny, and if I had to guess its that way in all leagues. They for the most part all think that they are world class and not one of them (one exception) would bet waters wet!! There are times when I almost lose my temper with these people but its like im rasing a child, I have to talk real slow and say it at least twice for them to get it. Its like they have no idea what real pool is about or how it should be done, not even to speak of proper pool room etiquette. I know that some where out there, there are world class players in leagues that would give me the orange crush and rob me, but after my experience with this I would have to say in general that:

1) any one with and A.P.A or B.C.A. league sticker on there case has the last 2
2) they wouldn’t know what that means
3) they wouldn’t bet it if they did
4) #1 also applies if you play with glove, but you might get the 8
5) after they said no they would want to play 1 game even for “fun” to see who is the better player
6) they wouldn’t see the flaw in #5

LOL!!

If this offended anyone you have my apology now

Ive never played pool league, but have been involved in dart leagues. Most of the time, and most of the people I have seen make it into a night out to drink and socialize. Yes there are competitive people and teams..... but at least what I have been involved in isnt what I would call an ideal competitve situation. The dart team I play on is competitive, (we finished 2nd last year) but we are still there to have fun first and foremost.
As far as the 2 guys giving you advice....... smile and say "Hmmmm Ill have to try that some time" and turn away. Its polite, and after a couple of times, they should figure out what you really mean.

I'm in a similar situation with my APA team (I'm the captain). I've got one guy who refuses to take ANY advice, yet insists on spreading his own brand of wisdom without fail. I think he won maybe one match last session, tops? Yet he knows everything there is to know. I always find it either amusing/annoying/bit of both when he tries telling *me* something - when I'm a strong six (I expect I'll be a seven before year's end) and he's a middling four.

There are some players in the BCA that play about pro speed. I'm sure they would love the last two from you lol.

NY JOE,

I think Allison Fisher has a APA sticker on her case somewhere or is wearing one on herself too. What about Earl too? he wears a glove on both hands!!!!!!

Now back to the subject, I have a player on my Weds APA team who is kinda in the same general subject.

He does shoot very decent, he's a APA 6, and should probably be a SL 7. He also plays BCA too. He's put together back to back break n runs 3 times that i have seen in leagues over 3 sessions.

But he lives about 30mins aways and sometimes doesnt show up for a couple weeks but will show up on a whim and expect to play.

Now lately i usta call him to see if he is going to show up, but i gave up and figured if he shows up, ok, if not, ok. I have a decent team right now with plenty of low # players who have enough room to move up and not hafta worry about going over handicap.

Heres my experience.

I have always perfered gambling over tourn or leagues. A few years ago a co worker "tricked" me into playing on a league. Well once the league starts I realize that the only "real" player is someone ive known/gambled with for years. We have respect for one another and know pool etiquette. One night the 2 of us had to play and like I said we are fairly strong players. I dogged a runout and left him an eight straight in the side. I rake the balls in respect for his ability. My "captain" makes a scene about how he "could have miscued" lalalala. It was all I could do to not cause a COMPLETE scene dues to my work ties.

Alot of people talk about gamblers having no respect/sportsmanship but since playing on that league I have never met ANY group of pool players with less respect/sportsmanship. League players do more sharking than Ronnie Allen ever thought of...lol. At least gamblers dont say "well i guess this on is over" when you are down on the 8 ball.

Ian
are we talking about a certain chunky blonde???? :D i think you and i have had some pretty good matches buddy!!! :)

you're a cockey SOB , ain't ya? i can't wait until you're almost 50, blind in one eye , can't see out of the other :D knock off the crap about the glove pal. i have working man's hands. years of construction work. callouses, blisters. SOMETHING, you know nothing about!!! i'll see ya tonight

People have to realize that leagues are filled with really good natured, enthusiastic, fun, competitive, sportsmen who respect the establishment, the players, and the league. I'm talking about dozens of players at various skill levels.

I think if people focused more on the positive aspects of league play, people would not have such a negative view from the outside. It really can be a lot of fun, and can be an entry for a new player, or an opportunity for a seasoned veteran to share their experience and knowledge.

D*m you guys are harsh. it may be true that allison and earl have apa stickers, and i know that lee plays w/ a glove but ill bet that generally if you play with a glove or love apa you can't play as good as you think you do. and as to the other guy that has and apa sticker on his case to "bait people like me" that does nothing but prove my point!! it is a sign of a week player in general. and if you read all of my previous post you saw that i did give credit to the real players that happen to also play in leagues.
