Another aiming system (this one deals with the sound of the balls)

I remember reading an article either in Billiards Digest or somewhere on the internet...I think it was writting by The Monk. Not 100% sure and sorry if I got the wrong author. Anyway, I was reading a post here and was reminded of it.

He says that we pocket hundreds of balls and our subconsious records the sounds of the balls and that every different angle/cut shot has a different sound to it when the CB makes contact with the OB. Like a 85 deg. cutshot vs. a 45 degree cut shot. So when you get down on the shot, you try to recreate that sound that is needed to pocket the ball. Now, I know that sounds crazy or far fetched, but sometimes I find myself doing this in my head and seems to help out.

Anyone else heard of this??

When you hit the QB and it don't make the right sound it's too late to adjust. That's like ducking after you hear the shot of a rifle. Johnnyt

Yeah, that's actually the point of the article..... so you try to recreate that sound that the CB makes when it hits the OB.

This has got to be the craziest crap I've ever heard. Sounds? Yes, let's say for arguments sake that different degrees of cut will result in a different sound, or a different pitch. And I'm a firm believer in the human bodys ability to learn over repetition............to recognize the different sounds. Which would mean only one thing................after the CB strikes the OB, you then hear the correct sound or the incorrect sound right? So the sound has not served any purpose as an aid to aiming, but more or less a "you missed it dumbass" notification alarm. All this would mean is that if your body has been conditioned to recognize the sounds of different degrees of cuts, then you can tell wether or not have missed the ball without having to look at the results.

Well.....it does explain why some people prefer Gold Crowns with the plastic over Diamonds with the leather. LOL

I know that when your hitting the pocket real good with your shots
it makes a different sound.

There used to be an aiming system that dealt with how much your balls itched. But people quit using it after they realized it caused them to scratch alot. :groucho:

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just look at the aiming point, line your cue up to that point, and deliver the cue ball??

This is true of every aiming method: we don't know if we're right or wrong until after each shot, but it still helps us learn from experience.

The difference with sounds is that they aren't a direct part of aiming like the picture we have of the CB/OB alignment. But associating a particular sound with a particular "shot picture" could help to reinforce and "flesh out" our memory of the picture and enhance our ability to recall it when needed.

The more associations the merrier.

Bert Kinister said in a video that each shot has a distinct sound.. a correct hit has a distinct sound. When practicing a specific shot you can tell the sound of a proper hit.
However as was said earlier it has nothing to do with aiming the shot, but it does add to reinforcing a correct hit on the object ball.
At least thats what I think he was saying...

you hear that rifle shot , duck anyway . It might not be the only one , and the first might not have been meant for you . Good tactics demand obtaining proper cover before returning fire

This is old news. Everybody I know aims this way. Some of them even close their eyes so the sound is that much clearer.

Steve I dont think you get the point, the sound of the ball that your havent even hit yet is so much easier to aim with then having to be in line or worring too much about having a straight stroke. Keep it simple.

Start counting real fast and duck. What ever number you count to between crack of shot and impact (hopefully not a hit on you) is equal to about 100 yds. so 3 = 300yds. This way you know the distance the person shooting is and if they can hear you yell to stop. The ducking is in case they shoot again.

Thanks for setting me straight
