Another ferrule question

When I first found the AZ site, the first purchase I made was for 10 pre made Ivorine 3 ferrules.
Now they have Ivorine 4. I take it that as Brian M said, its the devils ferrule as far as cutting goes.

I imagine that it will provide a harder hit than other materials, but what difference if any is there between the Ivorine 3 and 4?

Ivorine 4 isn't that hard, IMO. It's not as hard as the melamine I use. I bought some ivorine 4 to try & wasn't impressed. I never found it to be hard to cut, either, as people have claimed. A sharp HSS blade cuts it just fine & clean. I might experiment around with it a little more but my take on it as of now is that it's not anything as extreme as it's claimed to be.
 
Talking about ferrules.I was wondering if ferrules have any bearing on hit or is it just the tip that really counts?

Yes. Ferrules can increase the cue ball action or decrease it. They can give various noise, feel and hit differences.

Eric is the first one I have heard say the Ivorine 4 is softer than Melamine. I have not tried the Ivorine 4, so I can only go off what others say. They all say the #4 is harder than the #3 which was a little softer than most other Melamines. If you want to buy more of the original Ivorine 3 ferrules I still have a several dozen of them left.

Ivorine 4 was hard on cutters. Dulled everything except carbide. Just behind G-10 I think it's the hardest white material you can buy.

I've used it for sensitive customers as a one piece tip ferrule combo on their break cue. It will hold up to the abuse of no tip on a break cue.

I like Ivorine 4 but it sucks up the chalk. Seal it.
 
It might be slightly harder than the melamine Atlas sells as AegisII, but it's certainly not harder than Spaulding melamine. I never noticed it to be hard on my cutters, either. I use a HSS blade with a steep relief & I keep it razor sharp. It cuts the ivorine 4 like butter.
 
It could be a quality control issue. The Phenolic I've ordered never feel exactly the same. It's possible Ivorine 4 can very in hardness.
