Just a quick question:

Do any of the women on the WPBA gamble regularly? I know a few women that I have gambled with that play on the FL Fury Amateur tour, but I've never heard any stories of the strong pros that gamble.

Anyone have any stories they'd like to share?

I don't know about regularly, but I don't think it was for no reason that Sarah Rousey had 5 c-notes in her case in the recent BD profile. I imagine they gamble as much as anyone.

Just my opinion ...

But I do not think they gamble anything like men players do, and if they do
they play other women, or 'regular' type bar players. I have never heard of
any 'big' money games involving women playing a man with some speed to his game, have you?

A few years ago, I played the top woman player in our area, who had come here from Casper, Wyoming. She won most women's tournaments in the area. We played 9 ball, and she could not stay with me, and she wanted to switch to
8 ball. I gave her 2 games on the wire going to 7, won $500 from her, and she
quit saying she couldn't beat me.

I have also shot women's pros before (many many years ago), and I would give
any of them the 7 in 9 ball. I did lose a little to the women's National BCA
champion giving her the 7 and the break, but I was coming down from a
3 day party mode, and should not have played at all.

Monica Webb & Helena Thornfeldt do.
They came through Houston a couple of years ago and hung out at Bogey's for about a week matching up. Marcus Chamat was with them, he gave Kim White the 6 out for I think 2,000 and beat her. I bet he could'nt do that now.
Kim has been doing well lately, beating Kelly Fisher & Karen Corr in her last
two tournaments.

I just can't stand it . Who in the hell can play pool in Casper
I don't see any names like Allison Fisher , Karen Corr or Jeanette Lee in Your post.Try giving them some weight. I've seen Karen Corr's name deep in some brackets in The Viking tour Among others I've also seen posts on here With Allison playing Earl in exhibition's And losing a Race by like 7-5. The womens tour has strict rules about gambling at their tour stops , but Away from there I'm sure you can get Action.

I bet he could. He beat Lil'John at that game and I think LJ would eat KW alive.

Women Gambling

I To This Date Have Not Seen Any Of The Top Women Players Playing For Money. I Know That They Have, I Just Havent Seen It. With Myself Going To Alot Of Tournaments Im Led To Believe That They Dont Gamble A Whole Lot.

you didn't read it right ...

When I mentioned giving the 7, it was in reference to the ones I
shot back in the early 70's, not today's top players. Women's Professional
Pool has come a long way, Primarily because of Allison, Karen, Jeanette,
and Gerda also contributed for awhile towards raising the bar in women's
Pool. I like Helena's game if she could just get rid of the little logic errors
or out of the blue misses that seem to plaque her. If she can even out
her consistency, she would be a force.

Used to be, that noone could play except Jean Balukas (still my favorite).
It was mentioned about Earl playing them, and only winning 7-5, yes,
that may be true, but he will consistently beat them by that or better.
Why don't more women pros compete in Open events, because they would
find out how good they are not, and they prefer to be thought of as a
top woman pro rather than just a good player when considered in relation
to men players. It would make them generic, plus probably dent their
egos. This is just a thought, but I do not think Venus or Serena Williams
would back down from a challenge match from Andy Roddick. Do you
ever see women winning local tournaments in an open event? No, that's why they have those '$40 for the highest finishing woman player' incentives.
Allison is the best woman player since Balukas, but do you think she would enjoy finishing 7th thru 16th consistently in Open events if she competed
as opposed to being 'Queen Bee' of the women pros?

By the way ...

The woman from Casper that moved to Wichita is Deena Leath, and she plays
good.

Was LJ getting the 6 out or the 6 ball?
The same week at the same place (BOGEYS) David G. Tortured Marcus Chamat even.
Marcus quit after one set, which was smart since he did'nt get to shoot
much.

I know there are several women on the tour that gamble, although they are not allowed to actually gamble at the pro events. That's why in my opinion, men's pro events are much more fun to attend for the simple fact that's there's action to see along with the tournament matches. Out of the top 10 ranked women on the tour right now, I've personally seen 8 of them gamble (away from the pro event of course). When you get below the top 16, MOST of them don't. I've attended many pro qualifers in the last 10 years, and most of the time when I've approached a girl about playing for money (even very cheap sets) she seems to get offended and takes it as a personal attack. The funny things is that alot of them that turned me down I may not have been able to beat, just wanted the competition and the pressure that comes with gambling.

Scott - I have a list of phone numbers in front of me. Which one you want to play? I'd love to see you give Ga Young the 7. That's hilarious but I would pay to see you embarrass yourself.

I proudly played Jean Balukas in the 1988 McDermott Masters and lost along with other male players who were equally impressed with Jean's poise, her respect for us, and her playing. There's a lack of respect in what you wrote, and that grabbed my attention. In my years around this game I have never heard of the women disrespecting the men like that. The women on the WPBA Tour play at an extremely high level. This includes other players besides Karen & Allison. There is depth on the tour, which is evident with the recent success of Christy Norris, Pam Treadway and Ana Kostanian. You have players such as Sarah Rousey, Jennifer Barretta, Melissa Herndon, and Tiffany Nelson who are just a couple 9 balls shy of winning a major. Monica Webb is a joy to watch play, and she'd make you eat those words. As far as making statements like that, take it from am old road warrior; It's better to show respect to others from within yourself than to have it shoved up your butt sideways. I think that statement applies here.

I agree with you Blackjack. Most of the women players (especially the ones that aren't in the top 5) don't get the respect they deserve from the male players. I would love for some of the men on this board to tee it up with some of the ladies....they may be surprised :)

I'm glad you said something, because I noticed that too. I've noticed Snapshot likes to talk like he was some worldbeater, yet nobody has ever heard of him

I'll say this. Not trying to offend anyone, BUT, in Vegas i paid to go watch the BCA OPEN and the ladies were playing at the same time as the men. I watched about 8 matches Simultaneously and i was surprised at what a difference in Caliber there is. The MEN really do play ALOT better. I watched all the way down to Ewa and Tiffany playing for 3rd place, and frankly that late in the tournament the play was nowhere near the quality as when i watch Takahashi and Jeff White ( i think thats his name) play or any other matches in the top 25 finishers.

Just my $0.02

Obviously, there is no room for debate that if straight pool is included in the equation, Jean was clearly the best all-around woman player ever.

But if we're talking nineball, we'll need to set the record straight. Allison plays nineball at least as well as Jean ever did. Had they been contemporaries, they would, most likely, have pushed each other to a higher level, but based on the pool I've seen (and I've certainly seen over 50 live matches of each of them), there is no basis for concluding that Jean was the better nine ball player. By my count, Allison has won 47 of the 99 WPBA nineball rankings events she has ever entered. In an era in which winning tournaments is far more difficult than it was when Jean competed, I'd have a far easier time making the case for Allison being the best nineball player ever than making the case for Jean. Still, it's almost a coin toss. Let's just say they are the two best ever and leave it at that. Too close to call!

On ordinary non-tight equipment, I'm guessing there are only two woman pros that Chamat can't give the six and out, and he even has a chance to beat them with that spot. There are two others I reckon have even action with the six and out. Against all the others, I'm betting on Marcus. No need to name names on this occasion.
