Another tip question

Thought I'd start a thread with this question.

I'd like to ask you guys about a few tips and throw them into the suggestion or rejection mix.

Being an old schooler, I pretty much still reach into my million yr. old box of Le Pros when I have to retip. I'll admit they are inconsistent tips.

Recently I picked up that lathe setup that American Cowboy sells and I got the urge to experiment a bit now that I'm not rolling shafts on my thighs to shape tips anymore.

While I'm willing to experiment, I'm not willing to start spending 15 bucks a tip yet, so I asked Bob at American Cowboy for a few middle of the road suggestions and he suggested a few,and I bought two of each.

Hercules medium, Black Diamonds and Karomi. Does anyone know how any of these fit into the mix of good or bad tip choices?

edit, btw, I'm 90% a straight pool or one pocket player. Thanks ...

Well, Wizard tips are popular and they are about $7 each, there is a new tip out called the Tiger Emerald, and they seem to be liked by those who tried them, they are about $3.40 each. I liked the Wizard medium tip, which is a little harder than I like, and I tried the Tiger Emerald tip, but I haven't used it much yet for an opinion. For a cheapy tip Triangle tips are pretty good.
Some big name cue makers such as Black Boar, and the Samsara I bought put triangle tips on their cue. I saw where triangle tips is what Johhny Archer likes.

I know what you mean by old school. I went in to a billiard shop about 1992 and asked for the best tip for my cue and he said Lepro was the best. I just got serious about pool again last year and I hate the Lepro tips, my favorite is the Sniper tip on a Predator shaft. But those go for about $14 each, but if you look around you can find them for $8-9 each.

I am old school too. I have tried wizard, sniper and 5th ave. Still perfer the Lepro an wish I could find the 1/2 box of champions I bought years ago.

I tried the moori medium once, and it actually suprised me it was a good tip. All the other ones i tried didn't like so much. But I'm a triangle man....and champions are the bomb wish I had some left too.

They don't make Champion tips anymore? I thought I just saw some Champion tips for sale somewhere. I never tried one though.
I have a blackdot shaft for my old Meucci, and it came with what they call a modified Lepro, and I actually like how it plays. I think it is just installed thinner and
maybe pressed.

There's a few things about allot of layered tips that I do not like...

1) they are mostly way too expensive
2) allot of them have a clicking noise when striking the whitey
3) the conisistancy of the hardness levels vary amoung allot of the manufacturers, Mueller tries to give you a general idea of Hardness but I find they are wrong on allot of the tips.
4) allot of layered tips seem to glaze over, and you are constantly using a tip pick to rough them up.
5) most all tips change after a couple weeks of play too, most of them get a little harder, some get really hard.

Non-layered tips, one that you should try, is pressing an Elkmaster in a vise, generally overnight, not too tight but just firm enough to get the dome to sit almost flat. Doing this eliminates any mushrooming, Elkmaster really grabs the chalk nicely. And also tighten them in a vise gets the tip to play like a medium, giving you a little more feedback in the hit.

the tips you mentioned are decent and prefered by allot of the players here... Hercules, Kamui, Black Diamond and worth experimenting with but you might find some of the same things that i have found with layered tips.

Have fun with the lathe...doesn't hurt anything to experiment but maybe your pocketbook....
