I just read a message that came thru the message traffic. It was about military sporting events, there was a variety of events on there but pool was not one of them. I think that there needs to be an armed forces pool tournament. Maybe we can make something like this happen, I am currently stationed aboard a Coast Guard Cutter in San Francisco and currently in the process of picking my next assignment, if I go ashore I will be playing every day, watch out. Maybe I will also have time to try to organize a armed forces tournament as well, any feedback from you guys would be great as I know there are a few military guys on this board.

I'm not (was 40 years ago :D ) but my step-son is on the CGC Confidence. When they get back from running out of harms way from Jeanne I'll ask him if he knows many guys that play.

Incidently, you guys are doing a hell of a good job.

The Confidence, I know some guys on that boat. WHat is your step sons name? I might even know him, Coast Guard is real small. I used to be stationed out in St. Pete, they are having a brutal hurricane season out there. I hope things slow down for those guys over there soon.
Thanks for the kind words.

thebigdog I am active duty Air Force. The Air Force did have a big tournament in their ACC Command and had people compete within their base and then went and had a championship at Langley. They even had the Black Widow come and entertain the troops playing. But they lost their sponsorship and the last time they had it was 2002. I wasn't stationed within the Command at that time. It would be awesome if there were pool championships within the services. That would be very difficult to start though. Anyways if you actually get something setup, let me know.

He is Seaman Ronald Perry. He has been on the Confidence for about a year.
They did send him to Lauderdale for a while when the Confidence was up in Baltimore for refurbishing. Yea, he said they will probably have a lot of S&R because of Hurricane Jeanne.

Next time you see him ask him if he knows Chief Gibson from Station Fort Lauderdale, he is my old roomate and one of my best friends in the Coast Guard, he was the operations officer at the station there until a couple of months ago. Now he is commanding officer of Station Gloucester, Mass.

It all depends on my next duty assignment, if I decide to take one on the support side of the house I will have time to work on that. Problem is the fun jobs, the operational ones all have crazy schedules so we'll just have to see what happens. But this is something I defineatly want to try to get going eventually. My dad used to own a poolroom in Southern California and I still have a few connections down there so I think I can find people who can help out with this type of thing.

Active Duty Air Force! Spangdahlem AB, Germany 99-02; Osan AB, Korea 02-03; Scott AFB, Illinois 03-current.
I've been TDY to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, England, Italy and France.
I'm interested in helping organize an Armed Forces Tournament. I think if each branch of service held a tournament within each Command, then take the top 2 from each Command and play a Branch Tournament. Then the top 2 from each Branch could play in a tournament with all Armed Forces Branches. This is all in support of Armed Forces morale, so the players should get a Permissive TDY for the events. I will help out any way possible. My contact info can be found at www.zimsrack.com

Its hard to know where to start on something like this. I guess the best place to start would be with an MWR coordinator, my dads old poolroom was in an Air Force town, until George AFB closed down in '91 or so. We had quite a few Air Force guys who where good players coming in on a regular basis. I don't know too many guys in the Coast Guard who play seriously, so its hard to know what kind of turnout a tournament would get from the local units. If you know any guys from Travis AFB who play let me know, that would help me to get a gauge on who's in the area that would be interested in playing in a local armed forces tournament.

Zim how do you suppose we do this? You know how much coordination would have to be done between all of the services? There would have to be sponsors for this also unless the military decided to back all of the money. We had an ACC championship and one sponsor drops out so the Air Force just quit doing it back in 2002. Pool gets no respect from the military stateside. I hear the military in Europe supports pool very well. I had a co-worker stationed in Germany and he told me a story about getting permissive TDY to an Army base and they flew him in a blackhawk helicopter to some tournament over there to make it on time.

Anyways if you guys figure out how to make this happen I will help as much as possible.

I would suggest that we have one POC for each Branch of Service. Then have a POC for each Command. We find a location for each Command to host a Command Tournament. Each Base/Post/Station could host qualification tournaments, then advance to Command Level Tournament, then take xx top places to a Armed Services Tournament. We should have atleast 1 player from each Command in each Service. Since the DoD in general will not support Pool (Gambling) with cash prizes, maybe they can give away prizes and we could generate some cash funds from Civilian sponsors. I have friends that play pool in the Air Force all over the world and an Ensign in the Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor. I think that if we get all our ducks in a pond, the DoD just might decide to go fishing. I suggest that we find our POC's, tournament locations, sponsors for cash prizes, tournament format, all the T's crossed and I's dotted, then we present it to the DoD.
I'm currently stationed at Scott AFB, Illinois; which is a very central location. However, I don't plan on being here for much more than a year and a half from now, and will most likely be a Civilian in a year from now, but plan to be very involved.
Feel free to email or contact me thru AZ.

Anyone interested in sponsoring?

Press release from August of this year:

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TAP introduction in the Armed Forces

Mechanicsburg, PA – The Association for Pool introduces their latest
Amateur pool league, TAP into the Coast Guard. This division of TAP
will offer military personnel and their families the opportunity to
participate in weekly pool league play on coast guard bases located
across the globe. This weekly league play will offer them competitive
structured 8 ball billiard play under the TAP format of handicap
scoring. A new custom format of play will offer shorter playing
sessions to conform to the military standard operating procedure.
Tournaments at the end of each session will be offered to the top team
finishers with the opportunity to compete for prize money and trophies
with other division winners. A national tournament will be the
ultimate goal for qualifying teams in the future as the Armed Forces
league expands to all 5 services. This league format will be launched
to the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marines in the final months of
2004 with an expectant completion of all services league play by mid
2005.

Keith- Thanks for the info! I'll contact the POC this week and see what other info I can get.

I just looked at the TAP site, www.tapleague.com. This appears to be something beneficial to the Armed Forces, but I would still like to organize a "friendly" competition between the Branches with a tournament.
Maybe a Tour would be more appropriate! Each Branch could host tournaments throughout the year at different Commands within their Branch. Then take the top xx players from that tour and have a DoD Tournament at the end of the Tour. I think we could raise funds and prizes to make this possible. It will just take a lot of planning, communication and organization, along with support from the Billiards Industry.

Is anyone interested in having a webpage dedicated to this? I can put a page on www.zimsrack.com to put info about this. Let me know your opinions!

Thanks,
Zim

I am AD AF... Lindsey AS 90 - 93, Lackalnd 93-03, Altus 03-present.

I just returned from NCOA in Gunter and saw your thread. I would love to see an AF or Armed Services Tournamanet.

I can probably get a couple of cues and some billiard related items donated.

National chains, like retail stores and restaurants would probably be glad to back such a venture.

Izmit Turkey, 1979-80, Fort Campbell 1980-82 (post champ), Schweinfurt Germany 1982-85. Played in just about every tournament. Back then it was easy to find straight pool players. Nine ball was banned in some recreation centers (especially Fort Drum).

PoolMouse :D

Zim I can design a website if need be. This is starting to generate a little buzz, I would like to assist in anyway possible. If we get this all setup, I'd think maybe one of the pro's on this site would be glad to contribute to the success of the event. So who is going to spearhead this little project? Zim you sound like you have an idea of what is going on. We just need to know who, what, where, and how to get this setup.

IMO:
1) Set up a website containing all the contact info for the POC's, tournament locations, sponsors, etc. (most of this will not have info now, but can have a place for it)
2) Get POC's for each Branch of Service and each Command within each Branch.
3) Work on tournament format and by-laws.
4) Get sponsorship (outside of DoD) and Pro's to support us.
5) ADVERTISE to each Branch's Recreational Division (MWR, SVS, etc.) and get their support. Even if they don't support this, we can still hold this for the DoD members. I truely believe that if all our ducks are in a pond, they'll go fishin'!
6) PLAY POOL!

Sounds simple, looks simple, but in reality it's going to be some work. It will have many rewards once "the balls are rolling"! I don't mind stepping up as the AF POC and also a sponsor.

I'd like to see some inputs from some cuemakers and promotors from here (AZ), such as Blud, KingBay Promotions, Eydie/Bob Romano, some of the Pro's, etc.

One concern, do we have a board of trustees as a whole or just handle things in each Branch? We'll come up with something, I'm sure.

Rome wasn't built in a day gents! Let's do this the best we can!
Thanks,
Zim

Zim as far as creating this for all of the services, I think may just be too difficult to start at first. But trying to set it up Air Force wide seems more reasonable to me. If the Air Force tournament gets support behind it then we can try to expand it to include other services. I know of a person that could be a POC in PACAF. I could be one for ACC. You have AMC covered I believe. That leaves the following to get POC's for:

Air Education & Training Command
Air Force Materiel Command
Air Force Space Command
Air Force Special Ops Command - this command does not have any bases listed so I guess we can exclude it.
Air Force Reserve Command

There are some other bases that do not fall under these though
