Anyone have any Big Steve stories? I heard he was a real piece of work. I'll start with two I heard.

A pro player was gambling at the Golden Cue in Queens NYC a game of straight pool for 50 dollars. Big Steve is in the bleechers watching, he constantly yelling to the player that he is going to rape his wife, and then gets down from the bleechers and farts in his face. The player unscrews his cues pays his opponent, and says he's never coming back.

Another I heard was someone beats Big Steve for money. The guy gets in the car, Steve gets in his car pulls him over and robs him. An officer happens to catch him in the act. He makes Steve return his money, but does not arrest him. The officer leaves, the guy gets in his car and drives off, Steve gets in his car and pulls him over again and robs the guy all over again.

What a character.

I've got a story about Steve "The Whale" in my book. He stole my Szamboti cue from Keith who just got done using it to win the BC Open. How he got it - He told someone at the front desk he was Keith McCready and got locked out of his room accidentally. He knew Keith was in the bar celebrating. He convinced them well enough to send a maid up there to let him in.

Believe it or not I got that cue back! The rest of the story is in the book.

What a character.

I am not going to dispute your stories but I knew Steve for years and he was a stone coward.

One of the best 9-Ball breaks EVER, Pro tushhog, made my life miserable for yrs after his passing. Tough going through life in the pool world being a "Big Steve". Younger guys think Im him cause they dont know the history, old people cringe at the mention of his name. Abe Rich from Star Cues was very old and thought I WAS the Whale, pulled a gun on me in his shop claiming I was the Whale and I owed him money.

Any mention of Big Steve in NY, Miami, Detroit...hell anywhere and I get stared at like I took the Holey Grail...sigh

Voo~~{aka} BIG Steve

knew the whale well. he didnt play great, but was good, but was a lock smith and always had a scam going. he had a few trick type shots he would try to sucker people on. so i had a ball weighted off balance. so when i was hitting them around and would jaw with him and he would get a bet on one of his stupid shots, i would have my ball on the table and so he had to miss it. i pulled it a few times with him but he was smart so i couldnt do it but once in awhile.
always had to make him let me hold the money or out the door or some beef over the pay would happen. everyone that knew him tolerated his crap but he made the poolroom a little bit dearer.

I saw "Big Steve" and I knew they weren't talking about you like that! LOL.

Sorry you share the same nickname with a disliked person :frown:

You don't look like him and aren't nearly as big. All you share is a nickname. Most pool players knew him as The Whale or Steve the Whale.

I thought Steve stole the cue before the final and Keith had to borrow a cue to play with.

Nope. Keith had just won the tournament and was down in the hotel bar celebrating when Steve saw his opportunity.

Your right on one thing Jay, we dont look alike. Im a lil taller and at one time MUCH wider than the Whale...still tough being a "Big Steve".

Voo~~~laughin'

Don't get why people think dirtbags are "cool". I didn't know this guy, but the next time there is a post about why pool and pool players are missing out on the "big money", just reread the first post.

I could offer twenty, maybe even fifty, Big Steve stories. He was a regular at the Golden Q in Queens, NY, as I was, in the 1980's. He has been dead, I believe, since the early 1990's, and I don't see any point in badmouthing him at this point.

no need to bad mouth him. he was a funny guy. so there are many great funny stories about him.

Been a while:wink: and my memory isn't too good, I guess. I was there when it happened. I remember Keith in the hall grousing about the cue being gone, I thought it was before the final.
