Any methods to thin a leather wrap blank?

Hi,

The original leather blanks which I purchased seem to be alway too thick to install on the handle. I do not want to sand the handle down too much. I can pretty much do the seam almost perfectly.

Is there any proper ways or tools that you can thin the blanks so that the corner of the leather can be flushed with the forearm/buttsleeve?

pm jazznpool (Martin) he got some nice thin leather for sale, they are around .022 -.024 thickness
 
skiving tools can be used by hond on the edges and corners of the leather.you can get the tools just about anywhere or on the net.

to actually thin the leather you will need an electric machine to thin it and they run about $500 and up.
 
Depending on how much too thick it is, skiving tools may be over kill and can be problematic to use. Sanding is probably the way to go and using a machine, as masonh said, is the fastest, easiest, and most consistent way.

You can block sand it with 220 on a flat surface from the inside out. However you have to recut end bc it will frey out. I did this on a higher end cue the customer could switch back to linen if he wanted.

Your best bet is to look on ebay for a leather splitter. You can pick them up relatively cheap $3-400, tops. They have a hand crank. Look for the old green ones (Landis or American). Weaver Leather sells them, but they cost a mint ~$1000. Stay away from skivers, as they only thin the edges, not the entire piece.
