Any of you guys tried the Break Speed App for iPhone? It's pretty awesome...

Ya I bought the break app for $6 a couple of months ago. It's pretty sweet. My break is usually 20-22mph but my highest was 25mph. Only if I could break like that consistently. It's nice to make some changes to your break form and see if the results are positive or negative. Where else would you get some feedback.

Yeah, I got it for 5 bucks.. it's pretty fun, everyone in the room was trying it out.

No, definitely not, because the iphone is crap. But I love it on my EVO! Great stuff!

yea but you can talk about your evo in the NPR thread lol:p

apple cornered the market on phone apps somehow.....who would have thought that in 2010 you could radar your break speed with a cell phone?

next theres going to be one that you can take a pic and it will give you a planned run out lol

Isn't there a really long thread from the guys who wrote the software for this app here in the Main Forum?

I used it the other day to burst the bubble of a guy who thought his break speed was 60 mph.

I was practicing with a woman at the pool hall and showing her the cool new break app I had. When I set it up for her, she miscued and it read 50.98 MPH! Since I was hitting them pretty consistently at 18-19 she was very impressed with herself.

She keeps bringing up that 50MPH break and I'm not really sure if she knows it was a mistake or not.:embarrassed2:

Interesting, I don't have the app but I have to wonder how does it measure the speed? I don't think my iphone has a radar on it.. at least that I'm aware of! So is it by sound, volume and pitch? That might explain why it measured a miscue sound so high. I wonder how accurate the app actually is. But at the same time, I kinda want it now

the app uses the sound of the cue hitting the cue ball and the cue ball hitting the rack, and calculates your speed based on the table size and the positioning of the cue ball (which you set before you break).

How accurate is it?

It measures the time between the two sounds to within 1/44,000th of a second, so if the distance measurement could be perfect it could measure break speed accurate to within one millionth of a mile per hour.

But the distance measurement depends on you positioning a tiny cue ball on a tiny pool table on your phone's screen, so it's obviously not perfectly accurate. But if you're careful how you do that you probably only reduce the speed measurement's accuracy to within, say, 1/100,000th of a mile per hour - still MUCH more accurate than any radar gun.

If you can only place the ball on the setup screen with your finger, than one opportunity to improve the accuracy would be for the setup to have some fixed points; the diamond intersections and the "other spot" (?) would be better.

had/have this app for both my i phone and the droid software, works great and plenty of fun at the bar, my best break is 27mph and i average in the 23-24 range, i miscued a couple of time and get rediculous reading like 48 pretty funny as when i first started playing pool i thought breaks were at least 60-70 mph boy was I wrong

its a great app, I loved it-until i dropped my iPhone and shattered the screen,RIP iPhone. Droid phones suck I have had 2 of thm so far, lots of bugs.

it gets worse

So I load it on to my iPad, I'm all happy and excited again, set it up, broke the balls and nothing...........:embarrassed2: my dumb ass didnt realize until after the fact the iPad dosent have a microphone to pick up the sound, Duh. Thats embarassing, but I did it-Sadly my old age is showing up....:o

thats interesing when I started playing pool, before the radar gun I figured breaks to be from 50-60mph as well, when I heard 20's was average I thought that was just wrong or the players didnt know how to hit the ball.

Knowing what I know now a 60mph break would be a explosion when the CB hit the rack of balls-it would be cool to see come to think of it.

I'll have to verify again. But I'm 99.9% sure I was using the iPad for the break speed app just fine.

downloaded it to the iPhone last week, got the results i would have expected. normal break speed around 18, if i speed it up just a little, up to around 21.

seems to work fine, excellent app!
