You can call the owner of Playworld in Asheville....Dana...he will be able to give you any info you need.
I believe Mountain man was from the Drexel area...I could be wrong. I remember Dana talking about him. I think I remember he always played with a house cue.

Do you mean A.J. Clemen's? Probably had black hair and possibly a black beard and mustache at the time? Best game was one pocket?

Thanks, Kevin. I am from Asheville originally. Well, Weaverville. I'll ask Dana or Ottis when I get back to see my dad. Yes, house cue was the culprit.

Don't know. He was bearded and flannel shirted. Looked, well, like a guy from back home. Kind of like, well, a "mountain man."

Yes i remember him he was a good friend of mine. Eddie Hubble was his real name. He played with us in Vegas a few times and played in our moose tournaments every month. Yes he could play. I was told he was one of the best ever with the mud ball. He passed away a few years back (May he rest in piece) He had a groove in his beard where his stick ran through when he played pool. He is well remembered!!

Sounds like A.J. he definitely wears a lot of flannel...lol
If it is...he's played here in Missouri off and on for years and has been back here now for probably about 4 or 5 now...he's lost a step at rotation games and such but still plays good one pocket.

A.J.'s a little different no doubt, but he's a pretty good guy once you get to know him...unfortunately at least for a while there he was actually living at a homeless shelter in St. Louis. I haven't seen him in a couple of months but I heard last week or so he was recently at a tournament down in Cape Girardeau I think...I forget who's been backing him recently but he's definitely still around.

Pretty sure that was him. We were playing with the big cueball. Quiet guy. Played pretty good, too.

Hey I'm from Asheville too. Ottis...now thats a name I haven't heard in awhile. He used to be married to Christine...my Dad's sister. Does he still play? He was a terror at one time.

He used to ride the bus from the homeless shelter out to Chesterfield Billiards where I mostly played. He stood out like a sore thumb. We always called him mountain man. Funny, I guess regardless of where he went; he was going to get that pool name.

As others have said, his 'rotation' game was not top caliber (think Terbrock used to give him the wild 8); however, he played great one pocket & banked very well.

I think he's runnin', ( hhhhmmm ) playing in a card game. Yeah, I remember when Johnny came through and gave him the eight. Man, was he pissed. He played with an old Tad. Cliff tried him some in around 91?. Didn't like it. Remember Barry Cook? Clint? I just ran into Clint with Abernathy here in Raleigh at a Jacoby event. Remember Mickey? Sam? Cowboy? (who put me in more traps than trapper John) Gary Winters? (Tell him I'd like to play him some).

Gary Winters...he was tough with the fist. And a champion softball player. I used to date a good looking redhead from Asheville and her Dad...Dennis...ran with Gary all the time...so I used to hear the stories.:)

This is why I love the AZ. You can create a thread "Hey, anybody remember a guy Two Bit Slim, used to run in the North East area"...and get a couple dozen responses.

There were a couple of great players that went by Mountain Man here in the Southeast. The one that stayed in Myrtle Beach for a while went by the name Steve Edwards. I assume it was his real name. He loved to try and get people to play him on the bar box with the Big Cue ball. Very few wanted that action. He came over to the tournaments in the Atlanta area regularly. I talked to him some and he was very entertaining to talk to. He had long redish brown hair and a long beard and could run the racks. His cue went right through the middle of his beard while shooting. He was not top pro level, but he could hold his own with some of the pros. He liked to take them out of their comfort zone and play pay-ball on the snooker table or big ball barbox 9-ball which he would be the favorite against most of them. He got in the cash in many of the pro events I saw him in even though he did not win any of them that I can remember. I have often wondered what became of him.

Doug...When did MM play with your team in Vegas? Was it ever at the VNEA tournament? I saw this fellow 2-3 times in Vegas, in the late 80's and early 90's, and played him once (ONLY once...). Definitely remember the long beard, and the cue going through the middle! LOL He was, I believe, from NC or SC.

Edit: Well, maybe it was the guy described by Cueman, as Steve Edwards...I'm not sure!

Yeah, he told me he was from my neck of the woods, NC. I played him a second time at 301 Snack bar in Florence, SC (What a shithole). He could get out with that mudball, that's for sure.

Scott lee... Yes He went with us to Vegas in the VNEA tourny's quite a bit in the 90's. He actually lived up here the last years before he died. I met him the first time at Myrtle Beach SC. He tried to play me but at that time I couldn't win. We have gambled quite a bit and his Mud Rack was legendary lol:thumbup:

What I remember about him the most was that everytime he played in a tourny or gambling he would take off a perfectly good pair of sneakers and put on these old hiking boots that were about 25 years old.

Nice guy and I liked him alot!

Come to think of it. I don't think I ever made a ball on the break.

I've played both Eddie Hubble and AJ Cleamons(sp?) and they could both definitely play as well as pass for someone nicknamed "mountain man".
