Anyone Ever Get a Bad Custom Cue

Cue of Fury said:
I know that, and I don't think that anyone would say that production cues hit like shit. I think the main difference is in the total quality rather than just the quality of the hit alone.

I hear you...guess I'm more utilitarian.

Or, invent a time machine, go back about 6 years and put yourself on Joel's list and cough up the bucks today to get a damn good custom cue, huh?

Or, go back to 1981 and find that extra $50 bucks that the guy wanted for the one-owner Gus, that I was too STUPID to pay!!

It's that time machine thingy that's snookering me. :D

See...NOW you're starting to think correctly. One other thing...you can also wait patiently for those years to pass to get a damn good cue from Joel.
Patience my son, patience.

OK DD...I'm stealing some names out of the "5 best new custom cuemakers" thread and adding some other ones to give you a choice. Whose cue would you rather own out of the following: The cues of List A or the cues of List B:

LIST A: BCM; Black Creek; Jack Madden; Raven; Pat Deveny; Kenneth Murrell; Joe Gay; Bob Dzuricky

LIST B: George Balabushka; Jerry Franklin; Herman Rambow; Burton Spain; Ernie Gutierrez; Harvey Martin; Gus Szamboti; Frank Paradise; Eugene Balner

Everybody else can chime in also.....

put gilbert in there........and i'll chime in.........LOL

are you asking about collectibility or playability?

personally i couldn't care less how collectible a cue is.......if it hits well, it could cost me 2 bucks or 2000.

VAP

Peter Tascarella, Paul Mottey, Rick Phillipe, and Paul Drexler. list B of course.

I think it's already a known fact that all the cues in List B are not only collectible but also have been known for playability throughout the years.
So, List A or List B?

No additions to list 2 or B....only the ones that are on there

I'll be content with my Skips, Gilbert, Fanelli, and ER and will wait patiently for my name to come up on Joel Hercek's list thank you very much!

That is of course unless my OCBD goes uncontrolled again then I'll have to have cues from them all...lol.

well then, i'd have to go with list B.........if i don't like one of them....... i could just sell it for 15 grand and buy me a whole ass load of cues.........LOL

Well VAP, at least YOU made a choice. I didn't realize this was going to be such a tough question. Maybe I missed my calling in life. I should be structuring questions for the SAT exam, or better yet...I could go around to all the states and set up their written drivers license exams. NOBODY would pass the test and all the roads would be empty for those wishing to drive at 100+ miles an hour.

The thing is...there's no right or wrong answer, no grade, and no pass/fail. It's either List A, or List B. How hard is this for all of the custom cue fanatics?

It's the one that you think will give you the most feel, playability, success, which has the best reputation of being a well made cue. Forget cost and forget collectibility. None of the guys in list A or B thought about collectibility when they were making the cues. They were just cuemakers trying to make the best playing cue that they could.

I guess mindlessly hitting could come into the equation...how, I don't know.
Maybe I'll catch up to the rest who think that way and I'll finally get it and go on to greater heights.

OK...everybody that did respond between List A or B took List B, which I would HAVE to think is a no brainer regardless of how you evaluate their cues.

In 1992 the ACA, or American Cuemakers Association formed their Hall of Fame. Since that time, ONLY 10 cuemakers have been inducted into that Hall of Fame and have been bestowed the highest honor. ALL of the names in List B have one thing in common, THEY ARE THE ONES in the Hall of Fame.
How do you top that?

But wait, there were only 9 names that I LISTED. There's actually one more cuemaker that is in that Hall of Fame.

Yet, whenever his name comes up, ALL of the guys IN LIST A, (in addition to some obscure hacks that NOBODY ever heard of) get placed in front of him for cue recommendations from the forum cue elitists just because they got a business card printed up with "custom cue" on it somewhere and learned how to use a lathe. (regardless of how half-assed that might be)

The 10th and last member of the elite group in the ACA Hall of Fame is Dan Janes, maker of Joss cues.

Ohhhhh.....I can just hear the agonized groans emitting over the internet right now. DAN JANES???!!! He's a f*#ked up PRODUCTION cuemaker!!!

Well boys....he's a Hall of Famer in the world of cues in the ACA. That's why I say, give me a damn good Joss ANY DAY of the week from someone that's been recognized and given the honor over some obscure wannabe hack each time. He's also still alive, the cues are readily available, and the price is right.

Just remember.....HALL OF FAME. There MUST be something pretty special about what he does or he wouldn't be recognized. Now....push the end of your noses back down where they belong. :D

over some obscure wannabe hack

Dan Janes makes a nice cue, he makes about 10-12 custom cues a year. He also used to build cues with Bill Stroud another great cuemaker. Joss as a company makes a great production cue.

Do you think everbody on list B, including Dan Janes, started out making cues good enough to get into the ACA Hall of Fame? Of course not, would you call them wanna be hacks. Everybody has to start somewhere, and all the guy was asking was for in the other thread is speculation on who we think is the next Schick or Hercek or whoever.

Man life goes on, your getting to stressed over what people spend THEIR money on. Chill a little bit.

Jim
