Looking to see if anyone on here would like to donate to a silent auction for Autism Awareness.

1 in 150 kids are being diagnosed with Autism.

In the pool section because I'm looking for pool donations. Thanks.

I don't mean to sound rude, but 1 on 150 kids diagnosed with autism? I heard that in a golf commercial with Ernie Els, I think. I'm just saying, that 1 in 150 stat cannot be right! LOL.

I'm just bashing the statistic...not the cause. I hope you do well.

Just looking right now to gauge interest. It would end up going to the Indiana Autism group. But we are really trying to get something going and I know that some of the ppl who would attend a silent auction are pool fans.

If you have someone in your life who has Autism. I would like to hear your story.

I am a special educator and yes that stat is correct.

I'm pretty sure that's right. I know it sounds high but it's a figure that's checked pretty regularly.

We have a few famous supporters. Jenny McCarthy, Jim Carey, Ernie Els, Dan Marino, Kasey Kahne.

I might be a HIGH FUNCTIONING autistic. When I say high, I mean HIGH. I don't pick up on sarcasm to well...among other things that would indicate.

The Autism spectrum is pretty big so it doesn't really seem high when you go to the lowest functioning Autistic child to a teenager with Asbergers

Sounds a bit high, don't you think? Well, I'm not an expert, so I don't know.

The prevalence of autism is up 550% over the last 15 years. Some of it is due to the fact that labeling disabilities has changed. These days greater efforts to diagnose early are made. Even with that there has been an unexplained uptick in the disorder that reaches across cultures and socioeconomic lines.

Autism spectrum makes up less than one percent of the population. I believe 1 in 150 is less than 1%.

That figure is correct.

That is very informative and I appreciate your comments. I suppose, that I was concerned about the prevalence in the actual labeling of autism.
Due to the fact that my mother, too, has worked extensively with this particular disorder, I have been able to observe her work over the years.
It has made me understand what a truly broad spectrum exists.
I was simply wondering, however, if the powers that be might have lost interest in, say, ADHD - and were now focusing on autism as the "disorder du jour"? This would only be concerning, if they tended to jump the gun and actually label a child inaccurately. Regardless of the reasons, though, I'm happy to see a spotlight shine on a disorder that has been neglected far too long!

u12,

Call me tomorrow at 877-399-9901. I want to donate something.

I too have an autistic child. My son, our first child, is 15 and was diagnosed as High Functioning autistic when he was 8. I can tell you that the hardest time of my life was from 2, when he first started to exhibit symptoms, to 8 when he was diagnosed.

I look forward to your call.

WOW thanks Royce.

Can't take any donations until I get the address and tax exempt id numbers and all that jazz. We are also working on the date. But I am putting your name down.

I don't want to say sorry about your child because I think that 99.9% of people I run into with autistic children don't want to hear sorry, they love those kids so much and the love you get back from them is incredible.

Royce, have you ever watched the night of too many stars on comedy central? John Stewart is also a big supporter of the cause. We're trying to get a big name to headline some sort of blacktie event, but you know with the economy it's hard for people to put monies to charities. Here in Indiana we have the Sarkine Autism center at Riley Childrens Hospital and it starts the diagnosis at age 2 which also helps get disability for your child when you have that diagnosis in paper form.

Thank you Royce for sharing your story and for the offer of a donation. If all works out right we will have a few autographed books from Jim Carey and Jenny Mccarthy, a football, an autographed golf club, or maybe a golf outing. Hard to say. Once again thanks so much. If you ever have an event. I will donate some Data Recovery cards (plastic credit card type things like you see at department stores) to recover data from someone's failed hard drive, camera, SD card, cell phone, etc.
