anyone going to play in the U.S. Amateur Championships?

i played in it last year. it was great fun and outstanding competion. see you in hotlanta in sept.

I did last year. It was a good time, and a very well-run tournament. Good luck to you! I think I am playing again this year, but I may take the summer off of pool and get back in stroke on the golf course.

Let me get this straight - You pay an entry for this. Pay for hotel and travel. If you win, you get to play in the US Open which is a $500 entry event plus travel & hotel?

Nah, that's not right. You get a jacket and a trophy if you win. :D That is if you win the tournament in ATLANTA. YOu have to qualify just to get to Atlanta. (I think it is limited to stateside tournaments but I sure would love to go overseas to WPC or other such tournament.

That being said, it is one difficult tournament to win. Lots of top competition. Good tournament to measure your skills against other amateurs from around the country.

I went last year and had good fun. Thought I was going to be a nosh but it was tough action the whole weekend.

Don't forget that they pay for your hotel stays as well. At least they do while you are in Atlanta.

If you qualify the APA pays for the room in Atlanta.

I just got my packet yesterday as well. I have played in it before and made it to Atlanta last year. I shot "lights out" in my qualifier in San Diego but choked in my 3rd match in the Atlanta show. If one is looking to go for the prize payout, don't bother. There was a lot of tough competition in Atlanta and I enjoyed going. I met a lot of really cool friendly people. I'm gonna try again this year. If I make it through the qualifiers this year, I know I'll do better in Atlanta. Good luck to all who participate!

I'll be playing. It's my goal this year to get back to Atlanta after being there two years ago.

As for the no cash prizes offered, well that does turn some people off. For me, I love the competition. The lack of cash waters down the talent level some, but still some pretty decent players.

Keep in mind, it's called the US Amateur. Technically, amateur events aren't supposed to pay out cash. If the pros were structured worth a piss, winning an entry into a pro event would be a little more of a big deal, kind of like it is in golf with Q-School or the Nike Tour.

It used to be that the US Amateur would offer a spot into a tournament of choice during the Camel pro tour. Now it's not as big a deal since we can all pay to go play in the US Open without having to qualify for it. Still, nice competition at the Amateur and sometimes Archer stops by to watch so it can't be all that boring.
