Appleton drops 3 balls on the break again and comes up with no shot again.
Safety battle going on now..

Darren has a tough cut on the 5.. he swings at it but misses. Doesn't leave Shawn with a shot though.

Shawn replies with an interesting safe. Very lazy safety which gives Darren an easy setup to reply with a safe.

Darren breaks and makes 2 balls but has no shot. He comes with a nice safety and leaves Shawn in a tough kick.

Putnam misses the kick and Darren takes ball in hand again. There's a little bit of traffic but the way Darren is shooting he should be able to clean up this rack.

Darren makes 2 balls on the break but has no shot on the 1. He'll have to push here.

Putnam plays a great shot.... with the cue ball rolling right behind 3 blocking balls.

Except.. the last turn of the cue bumps 1 blocking ball out of the way just barely, but enough to leave Darren a clean shot.

Darren makes it and gets back in line once again. Shawn has heart, but it doesn't do any good if he's not shooting.

Darren is just NOT missing at all.

Darren breaks and makes a ball but has no shot on the 1 ball. He's looking to kick instead of pushing. He's got a decent shot at a safety here.
He changes his mind and pushes to the rail for a 1 rail kick.

Putnam kicks it but leaves a long straight shot.
Appleton drains it cleanly and comes up perfectly for the 2! Great shot. The balls are open but a little clustered. But nothing he can't handle.

Appleton plays perfect shape to get a straight in combo on the 3/4. That takes care of any traffic to set up the rest of the table. He just needs one stroke shot to get back in line. Hits it PERFECTLY.

With the rack your own format it looks like Appleton is practicing alone. Putnam has the best seat in the house

Darren breaks and makes a ball. He has a 1/2 combo but it's tricky.
He makes the 2 and controls the 1 ball leaving it right in the jaws.

If he can get on the next ball cleanly it's smooth sailing the rest of the rack.

He makes the one then the 3 ball. Has some precision shot making and shape needed here but he's playing great.

OH.. he hit it perfect but the cue ball drifts into the pocket. Putnam back at the table with ball in hand!
This may be the one and only chance he gets. Come on Putnam!

Putnam breaks poorly and comes up with nothing. All the balls are in the center of the table. Nothing locked up but it's semi congested in there. Gonna take some precise shape to get out.

May be a safety heavy rack here.
Yep, Darren comes with a solid safety.
But Shawn comes with it and kicks the 1 ball straight in. But no shape on the 2 ball.
He may jump.. he does. Misses the ball but gets a good roll and leaves Darren safe.

Darren hits the 2 rail kick making it look easy. But leaves Shawn with a straight in shot. Still a tough rack though.
Shawn shows some experience and makes a nice carom shot to open up the rack. He just needs this shot to get back in line for the run out.

Putnam digs deep to clean up the rest of the rack.

Medium speed cut break and drops a ball straight in the side with perfect shape on the 1ball. Everything is open with the only problem being the 4 to the 5 ball.
Putnam starting to get in gear. He gets on shape perfectly and takes care of the 4/5 perfectly. He takes down this rack like a champ!

The crowd chants USA USA USA..

Ok.. back to the action..

Darren breaks and makes his usual 3 balls. But he does have a shot.
There's a little congestion with the 5/6 but not horribly bad.

Darren is in total cue ball control. He eliminates the 5/6 issue easily. Connect the dots from here...

Darren breaks and makes two balls. He has a back cut on the 2 ball but it's makeable.
Could be a 7/9 combo too. This may be a quick rack.

Darren cuts the 2 in cleanly and gets perfect shape on the 3 ball. Putnam kicking himself for losing the lag!
Darren is just making it all look easy.

The 8 is sitting in the jaws.. Darren makes both the 7 and the 8 to give himself a tough shot on the 9ball....
Very tough.

Darren scratches on the break and gives Putnam a turn at the table.

Everything is in the open but there's an aweful lot of pressure on Putnam. He'll have to stay focused to keep in line here.
Putnam shoots a tricky soft shot with inside english and hits it perfectly. He's definitely NOT giving up. Go Shawn!

Putnam maintains control and goes ahead to get out.
