Putnam breaks... looks like it will be a dry break...
But the last ball rolling drops in giving him another breath of life in this game.

Putnam plays a safety and locks up Darren. But Darren hasn't missed a kick yet.
Darren kicks it but leaves an open shot for Shawn. Still a tough rack though

The race is to 13 again this year, correct? If they do a longer race for the final instead of true double elimination, I would much rather it be a little longer. Maybe to 17 or even 21, similar to the WPC in the Philippines. That would be cool.

Yes.. race to 13 but winner must win by 2. With a 2 game cap. So, 14-14 is still hill hill. Weird, I know.

Putnam plays a wicked safety and puts the hammer down on Darren.

Darren goes with the full length kick, hits it, and makes another ball! But no shot on the OB. He plays a safe. Shawn back in the heat.

Shawn 2 strokes it, double kisses the OB then scratches. No bueno! Appleton picks up his hammer and starts driving more nails in Putnam's coffin.

Odd break but he does make a ball. No shot though.
Darren taking some time on this one. Starting to feel some pressure.
Darren opts to play safe and locks up the cue on the 7ball. Shawn is in trouble.

Shawn takes the intentional safe to tie up the 3 and 6 ball down by the corner pocket. Nice shot.. Darren has some thinking to do here.

3 foul rule is in effect and Darren is gonna go for it. Safe again but a decent 2 rail kick for Shawn. But there's never an 'easy' shot with this much pressure.

Putnam makes the kick but doesn't make anything. He leaves a long open shot on the 1 ball but the 3/6 are still tied up.

Darren makes the 1ball then plays safe on the 2. Putnam back in the heat.

Putnam comes with the big jump shot using his playing cue and hits the 2. Darn near locked up the cue ball too. But he didn't. Darren replies with a table length safety this time. Putnam can hit it but no where to make it. He'll have to play a safe somewhere.

Still thinking.... no pressure. Nooonan.. Nooooonan.. be the ball.
WOW! Putnam fires at the 2 sending it flying. Balls flying everywhere.... 7 gets kicked into the side.. 2 comes down table to knock the 3 free of the 6 ball and both the 2 and 3 stop directly in front of the corner pocket leaving Shawn an easy combo with a clear rack!! Talk about a good roll!

Putnam's break...

Wing ball goes in... both the cue and the 1 ball come back up table. But the 1 gets tied up on the 8ball. No clear shot. Everything else is wide open.
Putnam plays safe putting the 1 ball on the other side of the table. Appleton replies with a calm safety of his own. Putnam will be going to the air.

He doesn't clear the 5 ball and gives Appleton ball in hand! Bad timing since Shawn was hitting every jump shot. Up till now at least.

The 3 to the 4 is tricky. Theres still some work to do here. Appleton makes the 3 but comes up short on the 4. He'll have to do some fancy bridge work and ball cutting here to get out. He cuts it in smoothly and gets perfect shape. Easy out from here. Appleton has been shooting consistently smooth all week.

Not sure but Putnam may have been warned for slow play. Shawn was thinking for a long time when Berman said something to him. What else would he say to him other than to get a move on?
 
Getting close

Appleton breaks and makes 3 balls..

Darren comes up with a LONG shot on the 3 ball. Tough shot. He may play safe but if he goes for it he can get out. Let's see how aggressive he feels.
Nope.. he plays safe and moves the 3 back up table. But a little short giving Shawn a shot. Putnam misses the 3 and leaves Darren a similar long shot.

Appleton fires at it and misses. Leaving Putnam an open table.

WOW.. Putnam running out MISSES the 7 ball but it drops in the side pocket! He's burning up mad karma points here. He must have rescued a basket of kittens on his way to the tournament today. Putnam apologizes and gets out.

Putnam breaks and loses the cue ball to scratch AGAIN.

Wide open rack. The only problem at all is the 8 ball is against a rail. Probably not a major problem for the current US Open champ though.

Appleton is calm and looks like a world beater. Setting up to get shape on the tricky 8 ball now..

and takes a break. Awesome!

Appleton breaks and makes a ball. The 2/8 are tied up but he has a good angle to break them up right now with a shot on the 1ball. He hits it perfectly and gets great shape on the 2ball. All clear from here.. this could be it folks!!

He could be only the 3rd man in history to win the US Open back to back. Makes the 2ball.. then the next.. and the next..
He's straight in on the 8 now with the 9 on the other end of the table.
