I have an old Abe Rich cue. As the story goes, Tommy Kaye was a road player and went into Abe's shop with Tim Scruggs in 1960. They bought cues made of this beautiful chatoyant wood that I am told is called orion. I never heard of the stuff...can anyone identify the wood from my pics? Just curious. Thanks

never heard of it and i'm not sure what that is but it's nice.

could be an off colored Satinwood amybe?

Never heard of Orion Wood but, I learned a new word when I looked up "chatoyant", thanks.

Some new information

I'm told Orion is an island in the Phillipines. So now I am not sure if I am closer or further from the answer!

That makes sense. The wood looks to be a type of acacia. There are numerous acacias & several can be found in SE Asian islands. In Hawaii, they call the acacias, "koa". It's a broad range of woods but they all look similar. My first thought when I seen this pic was an acacia, but couldn't be sure without actually seeing it in person.

I've never heard of such island.
Most famous coming out of the Philippines are lauan, narra, kamagong ( striped ebony) and Philippine mahogany.
I wonder if they just made up the Orion name.

More than likely, it's amazing how many common names there are for one type of wood. It can lead to a lot of confusion.
