Anyone Remember George Brundt?

I saw him beat Earl 11-10? in a tourney in Raleigh around 1990. The line was that he wouldn't 8. Everyone bet that he would. I mean like 30-40 people. I'll never, ever forget Earl's reaction when he reached 8 and the place erupted. Earl said, "I wish they'd make a line where everyone would bet on me." This little, older fellow (who is dead now) said, "Noone is ever gonna bet on you, Earl. Because we don't like you." Earl went completely off and George won the match. They had to hold Earl back from the seventy year old fella.

Pretty sure he was from Florida. GQ looking guy. He was mid-late thirties in, or around '90.

George was originally from Wisconsin, maybe Milwaukee. He was a great money player and did fairly well in a few tournaments. He became a high stakes Pot Limit poker player in the mid 90's and used to come to the big poker tourneys just for the side games. He made BIG money playing poker but got way too fat, sitting on his ass all day.

George died a couple of years ago. His heart just gave out on him. He was in his 50's. A helluva guy in my book. Didn't talk any shit, just got on the table and kicked ass! He was a player, not a woofer.

I remember the first time I saw him...was 1983 in Melbourne Fla at the Golden Cue <Poolhall Maven, you know that place?>. Anyway, he looked like a PGA touring pro dress-wise or a male model. Definately didnt look like the pool player back then. I ended up playing him in several Florida Tour events <when it was the Florida Tour> over the yrs, played lights out and no one had to beat him.

I remember seeing him around Romine's in Milwaukee many times. Also heard he travelled to Florida and as Jay said was quite the poker player. Not sure if he was a golfer but I do recall him making the rounds with a golf hustler named "Shoes".

I'd like to know too. I heard he's in VA Beach and doing ok. He stayed with me for a while in the early nineties. Man, that guy was a trip.

I saw him tangle with Efren twice at the first B.C. Open. By the way, this was Efren's only appearance at that tournament. Getting the 7-8-9 in 9 ball and the 8-9-10 in 10 ball. Never had a prayer and he was a good player. Don't remember the bet, $500 a set, maybe?

George Brundt...

I heard about George's untimely passing not too long ago and it reminded me of my first days of hanging out in a real pool room, the original Romine's High Pockets. George was one of the "regular's" and was a tough game to fade. I still remember him talking about all of the tournaments he would waltz in to, pick up a house cue, and wind up taking down the prize. When he went to live in Florida, it was a big loss for Milwaukee's pool scene.

Shoes didn't just hustle golf...he was a pretty good pool player also...Mike Gamboni is his real name.

So right Voodoo Daddy, I remember him too. PGA golf pro is such a good description. So good looking and a snappy dresser. I recall watching him play 8 ahead for $3500, he was so cool, he was called "the iceman"! I'm pretty sure he won too! Those were the days, buddy!
I was saddened to hear that he had passed, he was much too young.

Great to hear these stories. I thought I had him pegged right. I met him right after "the Earl incident." Nice guy and he did. Looked just like he came off tour of the PGA.

Back in 91 or 92 Art's Place in Naples had a Fla tour event and I played in it. I got a great draw and didnt have to play any stone killer until the final 4 winners side. George Brundt was my opponent and for a good while it was close until I shiat all over myself at the end of the match because I was so intimidated by George.

After the match George came over and spent some time talking to me about pool and he related all these times he had dogged it and how it made him stronger every time in the end. I really liked the guy alot after that and rooted hard for him every time I saw him play. I hadn't heard that he died or that he had become a poker stud. He was a great pool player for sure.
