Has it occurred to you that maybe it isn't pool's image? Curling has a pretty clean reputation, and you don't see Budweiser and Miller tripping over each other to give that game any advertising dollars.

Face it, the game just isn't that entertaining to watch. A bunch of well mannered pool players in suits would probably hurt our chances at mainstream if anything.

one step farther....how about the idea that because strip clubs and poolrooms all on the same pages it will improve the "fun" factor of pool. Why does this have to be about idealestic clean image thing or its bad????

squeaky clean stuff is great go to Church!!! this is Ames mister!!!

this all goes back to being PC, image has to be clean, why?? i live clean and make responsible choices but dont care what others think-whats wrong with that??? all this PC stuff is just getting on my nerves.

how about the image that its fun??? booze, chix, pool are all fun things to most people, there is nothing wrong with packaging them together and making it sell, with this in mind the strip joints are helping pool

I have seen the paper,I dont see much of a problem with it to be honest because in order for the paper to run they need money. If I could travel and do more live streams because Bada Bing wants to sponsor me then so be it,strip clubs are entertainment and strippers/dames and pool do go together, anyone deep in the pool scene knows that.

First time even hearing about it. If it's got strip joint ads, it might be worth a look though. :grin-square:

Personally if I had a Bar/Sports Bar/or Pool Room and was solicited to buy advertising in the New Paper with the Strip Joints as advertisers. I would pass, as people tend to judge you by who you associate with!

Showed the paper to 5 or 6 Pool player yesterday, and they either made a FACE, or said it was too bad that the Paper has gone in that direction. both Make & Females Pool players.

As one lady said in so many words what the HELL does Strip Bars have to do with Pool?

I say ZERO, and it don't help the image of Pool!

More info

Pool players and Strippers have a lot in common, they are both always looking for an easy buck.

I would like to know the cost to subscribe to these publications and also how many posters in this thread have a paid subscription.

In addition if Coco has a paid subscription and is so dissapointed with the new advertisers I will gladly pay him for the remainder of his subscription and take over receiving his copies of the publication.

Thanks

Kevin

Coco I enjoy your posts, this time I think that you are missing the boat. What do strip clubs have to do with pool? The answer is correct, nothing. The demographics of advertising show that the likely list of readers to this paper will be 18-40, single men with disposable income. It is the likely list of readers or subscribers that is being targeted, not the sport. In the El Paso Times today there are five ads in the sport section four for strip clubs and one restaurant. What do sports and strip clubs have in common? If you try you can start to grasp the trend here. If the readership of the pool tabloid were deemed to be middle aged women I am quite sure that Maytag and Vouge would advertise. If you want to slam something, slam the publication itself, the lack of info, the format, etc. Any publication lives and dies by it's advertisers and as long as the demographics say that a large percentage of the readership is going to be men, a company that offers glimpses of naked breasts in exchange for dollars will probably throw a few advertising dollars at it. If they advertise enough maybe a decent writer could be hired. Just the facts. So if the image of pool is all important to you I guess that in order to play the sport everyone should have to fill out a membership card, go through a background check attend at least one down with strip clubs rally and have a personal reference from a respected minister. Come on, just ignore the ads.

Your post has merit, but as I said I think the addition of STRIP CLUB in a State Wide Billiard Publication does ZERO to enhance the IMAGE of Pool.

If Pool in the State of Arizona wishs to attract MAIN STREAM SPONSOR this addition of Strip Club as advertisers IMHO to what was the Number One Read Pool publication, does ZIP to enhance the IMAGE of Pool. IT is IMHO NEGATIVE!

Pool will have a tough time getting a Fortune 500 company behind it and a small newspaper with a circulation of less then 2000 will be lucky to get decent sponsors so they take what they can get and I see nothing wrong with it,the strip clubs are on the last page so I think it will be overlooked alot and people will get what they want before they even see that. Its a free publication,if you dont like it then dont read it I say.

Yeah, I enjoyed running the paper when I did own it.

But it really wasn't "a good billiards newspaper here in the PHX area".

The layout and use of color in the publication showed that I really didn't put a great deal of effort into the publication. It was really just another iron in the fire that got some of my attention, part of the month.

Right, Coco?

Arizona Peeps-Anyone seen the NEW Version of Arizona Billiards News? Do Strip Joint go hand & hand with Pool?

Well as Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. said to his Sergeant; ?Surprise, Surprise?.

Well I am disappointed as the Paper that I loved when Mike Howerton (aka AZHousePro) put it out as Arizona Billiards News, has changed again for the bad.

I don't see a problem with the ads. Besides what is wrong with titties and beer?

If my local paper can advertise bOOb bars I don't think there is a problem with a billiards oriented paper doing it as well.

Now it is called, The Billiards & Dart NEWS, and the Banner say:

"The Valleys' # 1, Guide to Billiards, Darts, Poker, and Entertainment!"

Looks like a sort of clone to Billiards Table Talk from Dr. Jack with the ads for STRIP Joints that IMHO have ZERO to do with Pool, and will do nothing to enhance the image of Pool in the State of Arizona.
angeryonfire.gif

Sorry I think that Darts, and Poker compliment Pool, go hand in hand with Pool, as many of the Rooms/Bars/Sports Bar have Darts & Poker (Texas Hold-em) going on as the same time as Pool Tournaments.

No I am not a prude, but I see ZERO to enhance the image of Pool by putting STRIP JOINTS in a Pool Publication.

The IMAGE of Pool and how to improve it has been discussed many times on this very forum. If Pools image was better would pool be able to attract more mainstream advertisers like other sports, like NASCAR, NBA, PGA Golf, MLB, NFL, etc?

Hey Cocco, you were doing so good. Then you start the crying again. If you dont like it DONT read it. By the way what do you care, you don't even play pool. Do us all a favor crawl back in that hole you came out of. However, if you do feel like playing some you can find at the strip club with the rest of the MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think one billiard publication that has ads about strip joints will hurt the image of pool.

Furthermore, the strip club that advertises is being very smart to advertise to this client base - good marketing in my opinion. And, the publication is in return getting money for the ad. It seems to help everyone. For those that don't like it, don't read it or worry about it.

Totally. Strip club ads do cheapen the image of pool players.

Now if we could only figure out the other 98% of what cheapens our image we're ready for prime time.

Strip clubs advertise in lots of publications.
"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Koopa again." - This guy seems to have wisdom beyond his years.

The man speaketh the truth. Certain sports/activities will never become mainstream, that's just the way it is.

Like it or not, I'm afraid Lenny is right. There are places here that are strip clubs, bars, and pool rooms all rolled up into one.

Arizona Pool don't have to start with Fortune 500 Companies looking for sponsorship, as the State of Arizona is home to some large consumer orientated businesses. Like Sprouts Markets, Bashes/Food City/AJ's Fine Foods (markets), several Large Auto Groups, (2) Budwisher Distributor in Maricopa County (Hensley & Golden Eagle) who neither one seem to support Pool. Plus pages more. Many of who support amature sports.

Yesterday I drove by Liberty Field (a local Softball Park in the West Valley), funny to see who had BANNER ads there trying to capture those Softball Players attention, and consumer dollars. BTW the reason it is liberty Field is liberty Buick is a Major sponsor!

Pool players spend their consumer dollars in many of these businesses, or on these business products, and services.

Well Mike you and I last December in Metro Sports Bar discussed what happened to your paper, The Arizona Billiards News after the first new owner turned it is to something resembling a company NEWSLETTER or as Kevin Lewis called it a Magazine. If my memory serves me correct I said Kevin Lewis had pretty much destroyed what your Paper was in THREE ISSUES.

Than came the Arizona Billiards Info that for 9 issues was more of an Advertiser, and Tournament guide with little original editorial content.

Now the paper is called Billiards & Darts News. and has (2) Pages of STRIP Joins advertising, that IMHO does ZERO to promote the image of Pool.

Like I said in post NUMBER # 1, Mike about when you had the paper.

Well I am disappointed as the Paper that I loved when Mike Howerton (aka AZHousePro) put it out as Arizona Billiards News, has changed again for the bad.

I still have the LAST Howerton Issue of The Arizona Billiards News, it was by far BETTER than anything the Paper became after you sold it Mike. Also many of the Glenn Bonds HOW TOO ARTICLES.

Sadly gone are the interesting editorials, Glenn Bonds How Too articles, the Page 26, Place to Play Pool Listing, that cover the Valley so well, etc. etc. etc.

I have 4 step grandsons who the youngest of is very interested in pool, he watches many of the archive live feeds with me when I am over at his house that has high speed net, I use to bring him the Paper to Read, now GRANDMA say NO Pool Paoper to him, its the Stripper Ads!

I've always thought it would be great to have a combination strip club/poolroom. I'd call it BEERS, BOOBS & BALLS! LOL :D

When I ran the paper, I had a rule that all advertising had to be billiards related in one way or another. I did run an ad for a pool service and a flooring company, but they were both ran by pool players and the offered a discount for pool players. Not sure what I would have done if I had been approached by a strip club owned by a pool player.

I realize that I sometimes have a real naive viewpoint of things like this, but I really wanted the paper to be supported by the pool world.

Just keep puttin Jasmin on the cover of every magazine....That's an eye catcher if i've ever seen one adn she doesn't even have to take her clothes off....

:clapping: That would be awesome. I've often considered the possibilities of installing a pool table in a strip club and playing our league matches out of there.

I've seen Mike's paper before he sold it. Billiard, professional, informative & clean; just like his "site" is now. He is modest and sarcastic... I love it.:D He and his "staff" have worked tirelessly and done a wonderful job.

I have seen the paper after the new owner has it, the least I can say is... I am disappointed.

"Paper" whether it be flier or news is Prehistoric. Everything moves faster on the "net", I know if I want info, I Google first. One of the few reasons Mike gave it up. Made a little but was a lot of effort for the return. Sometimes you have to ask yourself how much is your time worth. His family is important to him.
