APA league etiquette...to hell in a handbasket???

Maybe... But I know what I like and dislike. So I've drawn on mainly 2 things:

1) Being a competitve golfer. Futiley trying to compete in numerous instances with players that obviously have unpoliced sandbagged handicaps is a buzz kill. It sucks all the oxygen from me as I throw my time an money away.

2) Knowing there's a ton of people in league that are simply ignorant of any ettiquette and reverence for the sport.

I just don't have the patience for cheaters and asshats, so why subscribe when there's a decent chance I'll get a weekly dose? (BTW, sorry for my inappropriate analogy before).

That being said, will joining a Masters league drastically reduce these two negatives?

Hey KK - you need to find a BCA league or "other" non-handicapped "money" league - that's where the serious players are :)

Yes it will. I have been playing APA Masters for 5 years now and love it. I have played regular 8-ball and 9-ball on and off during that time, and get tired of a lot of the BS people have been complaining about. But I have stuck with Masters every session, and have no plans of dropping it. In respose to your negatives:

1) No handicaps = no sandbagging. Its a straight up race regardless of who you are and how you shoot.

2) For the most part there is proper ettiquette. Most everyone playing Masters has played for a few years and knows ettiquette. As with anything there are exceptions, but you shouldn't find a whole team of exceptions.

Masters also allows you to push in 9 ball, only the 9 ball counts as a win, no slop in 8 ball (call pocket), and you can use a jump cue in both. There are no time outs, you only marks wins on the scoresheet, and you still play in cities for a chance to go to Vegas and compete in the Nationals. A team from my area went there a couple of years ago and won it all. If you have never tried it, I would recommend it.

I'm also a big advocate of Masters - everyone once in a while I might jump on a team for 8- or 9-ball, but I'd rather just play heads up. Just one quick correction - we play call pocket 8 ball in APA Raleigh, but that's a local by-law. At Nationals, it's still "slop counts."

For those of you who play with or against teams exhibiting poor etiquette, we all had to learn etiquette at one point - seeing some of the things you deem to be bad form is a chance to teach. If you're a better player/better known player, you can use that to your advantage - use your influence as a respected member of your local pool community to teach proper etiquette.

Can someone elaborate? Isn't Matsers play a team event? This statement seems to infer there's an individual format as well.

Thanks for the input on my Q Milo, rbu, and Doom! :)

Masters is team play, but with individual team members matching up with other individuals from the other team.

Dave, just a question. I think the post you referenced was noting that there is no slop on the 8...do you guys play no slop on any ball?

Thanks for the correctin David. My old team never made it to nationals. although my current team got in the final 4 of cities last time, and would have made the finals if I hadn't missed a straight in 8 ball shot on a break and run attempt.

Great call on teaching etiquette!

Steve, yes, here in Raleigh we "call pocket" on every shot in 8-ball Masters. I really like that rule too, sad to hear its not that way other places.

I agree. Seems like the masters division would embrace that rule. After all, better players shouldn't rely on slop to win a game.

I have added a segment on pool etiquette to my course material. If you haven't already done the same, I can send you the lesson plan if you send me an e-mail.

That's one of the things I love with the USAPL league, handicapped with no slop (or even 8 on the break). I can't wait until enough interest is drummed up and I can get the first division rolling here in Charlotte. I've found a lot of interest in people who want a high skill level league but with a handicap.

So Steve, wanna be on a team? :)

I plan on being down at the Green Room for the tournament tonight. If you are going to be there, grab me and we can talk.

I'll see you tonight then, I'm definitely going to be there. I have my pretty glossy posters to put up now! The Friday night crowd is a lot of my intended audience as a lot of them have quit playing APA/8 Ball Express because of the myriad of reasons people complain about it (but always forget the positives of it).

See you tonight.
