APA League

I recently posted some pics in the gallery of some cues that I made for the local APA LO to give as prizes at an up coming tournament. I got a few comments from other APA players in other leagues saying that their LO doesn't give nice prizes or give much back to the players.

I would like to see some comments from APA league members about their local league and if they are generally happy with their LO or are they dissatisfied with the way their league operates.

So ... how about it..........???

care to speak up???

Our Portland area LO is pretty cool. I was a bit bummed when I found out that we didn't have a top gun tournament, so I asked her about it. She said us higher players don't need any more self-gratification, more or less, and instead uses that to fund a big campout. The campout is well worth it, too. $5 for members, $10 for friends, all food is taken care of, free sodas and water(unlike some pool halls!:p), free beer(last year was slow, year before I think we killed 5 kegs), prizes for members, games to play(no pool), along a river, etc etc. At first, I thought it would be kinda lame hanging out with pool players for a few days.. but, then even APA skeptics were singing its praises, so I went and found it to be pretty damn fun.

Oh, and our LO would be on the spot with giving you a foul for bad sportsmanship and so on. Every year we have a 'civil war' with another LO, with prizes and so on. I'd say our LO does a great job. Now, if there were only something she could do about my teammates skill levels going up almost every time we go into the tricup/cities tournament.

The LO up here sucks ass. As soon as she took over the franchise the prices went up from $6>$7. Money payed out after each season was cut in half. "Cities" tournament went from being a big tournament to being a small tournament. No more "Money Tournament". It was replaced with Tri Cup and you only get paid if you win 2+ rounds.

The kicker is the responsibilities of the LO have been put onto the players. Now we need to print up the score sheet from the APA site each week and mail it back to the LO. What is the service we are paying for now?

I still play but they are running the league into the ground. BTW- I am talking about the Seattle area.

Pretty much the same in my area too. LO sucks and does nothing for the teams what-so-ever. Prices went up to $8.00 and there is no prizes at all, not even any patches and/or stickers that you use to get for making the 8 or 9 ball on the break, running a rack, etc..., no trophies, no cookouts, no get-togethers, no money tournaments, even showing some favortism to a certain few teams. Sometimes we'll have to print our own score sheets too, other times he'll bring em down. Our LO is literally running it into the ground just like he did the Busch league when he had it when I first started playing tournaments 25 years ago. He owed Busch so much money that Busch pulled out of our local area and wouldn't let him have anything to do with the league. I come back 25 years later and the same guy is the APA LO for my area....... go figure.

I think when I started, it was still $5/match. It did go up to $6 and then $7. I do A/P work, so I see the rise in bills all over the place. I like the organized online stuff, because it allows me to see more than just our own score sheet. I consider it more of a hobby and a chance to test myself, with the odd chance of making it to Vegas for singles, so for a few bucks I'm not bothered at all.

As for calcwby4u.. I'm sure you can put up an offer to play somebody from the APA.. Brian Parks isn't too far from you, I'm sure.

I don't have any major issue with our LO. Do I agree with everything he does or how he handles every issue, certainly not. But in the scheme of things, and the scope of what he has to manage, he does a decent enough job. I'm quite certain it isn't as easy as many folks would have you believe.

I'm thinking he treats us a bit better than many areas mentioned here often. There is a cash payout at the end of every session, and all four teams in the playoffs get something. First place splits around $800, the others incrementally less. Not bad, for a league that isnt supposed to be a cash league.

We have the Top Gun stuff and and the monthly handicap tournaments with a total point winner at the end, but we have to be the only area in the country that doesn't have the twice a year Classic or team tournament. I have read about these in other parts of the country - The Southwest classic invitational (or whatever it's called), the Northwest, the Northeast, the Midwest, ... and so on. It sucks, until the National Tournament we really only ever face competition from our own side of town.

Nega

I had no idea that there was much difference in how leagues are managed. Here, we have the usual sessions and the playoffs. There are either 4 or 6 winners in the 2 big pool halls each session. There are tournaments going on almost every weekend. League play costs $9.

We had about 10 people go to Vegas. The LO went and rented a limo to take everyone around town.
Joe won the annual performance award, platinum level from the APA.

He gives back. We have it good and I didn't realize how good.

I don't know if it's common in other areas but we have to pay $1 for patches and I think that's BS. I don't care about the 8/9 on the snap patches but break-and-runs are a real achievement that should be recognized. In my area, I don't see B & R's happening often enough to make it financially unfeasible. (Maybe make the SL 8s and 9s pay for the patches if they want 'em.)

I will say our LO does a pretty decent job. There are a couple things that get my blood pressure up however. We pay $10 each week but we split pretty good money at the end of session if we finish in the top 2. 3rd and 4th also receive money but not nearly the same and then 5th place will get about $35 for each player.

We pay $2 for the patches and I only take the patches I don't currently have, which at this point I don't think there are any.

What really pi$$es me off is the W9 to fill out each year. This is a league we play for fun and I certainly pay more in each session then I get back. I realize it is a business for the LO, but his expenses are not my problem. I am sure he made more than enough before doing this. (This started about 1 year ago and I have been playing in the league for 3 or so years).

Other than that, I play in this league for the camaraderie and socializing. It is a night out(2 actually, 8 ball and 9 ball) to have a beer with friends, a little competition, and a little practice to hone my skills. If you are playing in it for any other reason, I believe you will be sadly disappointed

Free water? I'm in.

2.00 for patches ? wow !! i have been playing apa for about a year and a half now. i probably got about 70 or 75 patches so far, aint bothering to count them. never paid for one of them. also never seen a w9 form either.

at the end of each session we get individual plaques with the team name and all the players names on it. they say 1st,2nd,3rd etc.

the top 3 finishers in the top gun tournaments get a lil money also. plus you get top gun patches also. oh yeah 3 top teams in top gun tournaments get plaques also with your order of finish.

we never have a problem getting score sheets, they are always waiting on us when we get to where we are playing. if i recall correctly we have 14 divisions here and he is always at one of them every night.

he has never failed to get right back to me if i txt him with a question. i always thought he was a pretty cool guy but it seems like i have a great lo compared to some of you.

being a bar banger most of my life where you had to call damn near every thing that happened on the table i can guarantee you i hate slop as much as any body. although i sometimes get frustrated and sometimes outright pissed off when i lose to a lesser player that lucked a few in, i can honestly tell you i have enjoyed my time in apa more than i did in bcapl before it folded here.

the previous post was long enough. i know this thread is about the apa league but i would like to touch on the subject of all leagues in general.

i play in 3 leagues here.

sunday apa double jeapordy.
tuesday apa 8 ball
tuesday memphis pool league "money league"
friday apa scotch doubles
saturday napa 8 ball and 9 ball

a lot of other players around here play in more than one league. i never hear any one bashing another league or the my league is better than your league crap. i guess we all just like to play pool .

let me tell you how much every one supports each other around here. i play on the same napa team as the napa lo. he also happens to be an apa master league player. around here you do not have to be on a team to play in the master league, you can play strictly masters if you want. i just got him to join my sunday apa double jeapordy team also as he wanted to be eligible for certain tournaments.

with me being the best player on that team and i am only a 5 we needed some help bad lol. now for the 1st time we have to worry about the 23 rule lol. as a matter of fact last night i could not play 9 ball or we would be over 23 so we played our 3 twice.i was able to play 8 ball and we kicked butt winning all 5 games for the 1st time in months and lost 9 ball by 7 points.

any way back to the subject. i do not think you should blame an entire league if you have a negative experience it any league. the blame falls entirely on the individual running it.

The LO in our area doesn't pay out anything. He is not my LO anymore because I no longer participate in The APA for the reason stated. All of the other players complain among themselves but they keep feeding his bank account so why should he change anything. If I was in his position I would do the same why change, more money for me and they just keep comming back for more.
