APA Nationals - mini-tourney info needed.

It looks like I'll be attending the APA Nationals at the Riv (August 22nd thru 28th) - helping a friend with a booth.

I will have lots of free time, and am wondering what it takes to qualify to play in the mini-tournaments. At the BCA Nationals, the mini's run almost non-stop, and I would LOVE to get in 5 or 6 hours of tourneys a day.

"Calcuttaman" here on AZB works the BCA Nationals mini's; but didn't know about the APA mini's.

I am not an APA member; do you have to be a member to play?

Do you have to be entered in the Nationals to play in the mini's?

If membership is required, could I join the local APA now and qualify to play in the mini's in August?

Any help out there??? Thanks in advance.

i think you would need to be a member and also have 10 matches in so that your handicap is established. the minis are run by skill level.

You're out of luck. Mini's are for APA players with an established handicap. You don't have to be playing in the nationals to enter them.

Thanks for the info. How long does it take to establish a handicap? If I joined soon, would there be time before Nationals?

While I like Vegas a lot; I LOVE to play pool; and one of the best experiences I've ever had was BCA nationals where you could play as many mini's as you like, for as long as you like, any hour night or day. Very cool.

I just can't see sitting around a booth all day; it would be hard just watching others play.

willie, you only need 10 matches to be elegible for higher level tournaments, so you should have time. might have to join 2 teams on different nights to be sure though.

Well- I see ol' Willie has decided to make the trek back to las Vegas!

I also see has has found an event he can feel at home - competing with the 2's and 3's.

I don't want to beat him up too much - because I think it is admirable that he is still trying to compete.

However, mr. Willie; if you wish some spirited pool competition - you have come to sin city. This is not Disneyland and this is not where your dreams (0f becoming a pool player) can come true.

Jump on in- the water is fine!

If you have the time- I might be able to indulge you in a little game of pocket Billiards. Got a couple things you might like to see.

BTW- bring that cup out here and you might have room in your return luggage for more important things.

Wishing for the best in pool

Mr. Marty Griffith,
I would consider bringing the Betmore Cup to Las Vegas if I can arrange appropriate security measures (there are a LOT of scoundrels in that city, the number increasing when you moved there), and if I can find some decent competition (and if I can't, then maybe you and I could play some).

It sounds like there is no way I will be able to qualify for any APA play; and at risk of making your head even bigger, there is no way that APA can hold a candle to the yearly BCAPL extravaganza...that is the greatest week in pool for bar table players...hopefully next year I can make it for your event.

I still owe you a meal at the Peppermill if you are going to be around that area. Maybe lunch/breakfast/or dinner and some pool is a possibility. I'm not sure yet of my "work schedule", I'm thinking I won't be too busy to demolish you on the table.

Vegas - Willie & me

Well, Mr. Willie:

You can call me at anytime. I believe you have my phone number -
I KNOW I have your number!

I appreciate your recognition of the BCAPL event we do every year. We work real hard to try and bring the best event for all of our members - once they have seen our event, others just don't compare.

Get on a few summer teams to get your matches in.

Here is the scam that I know players, hustlers, from my area do.

Get on teams that are just recreational teams that just think that they want to win but really don't. Teams during the summer are looking for players and it is a short session so you need to play on more than one team. Play really bad to keep your skill level low, that is why you want to be on a crappy team. You don't want to hurt the changes of a good team making the playoffs. Now that your handicap is low you can play in tournaments with players below your real skill and steal their money. The tournaments are grouped by skill level. Here is the big flaw. Your skill level is not affected by how you do in those tournaments.

A couple of players in our sandbagging league told me that is what they do. They go to Vegas on their own just to get into the tournaments because easy money can be made. Would like to see some of them beat at their own scam.
