Archer and Straight Pool

On the newest runout radio with Souqet and Archer, Johnny mentions that when he practices now, he only plays straight pool and usually plays on a GC V with 4 1/4" pockets in his home room. He feels he concentrates more on trying to run high scores at 14.1 than just playing nine or ten ball by himself.

Jose Garcia also mentioned on his player review Accu-Stats 9-Ball match that he plays 14.1 before nine ball tournements.

Anyone near Marietta,GA know what his high run on that table is so far?

I'd love for Johnny, Danny H or Schmidt to win a world 14.1 at some point.

I wonder what his high run is. He was running 100s immediately when he learned how to play the game. 150 and out on Jeff Carter. I think he ran a 125 on Varner shortly after Varner taught him some things about the game. He should get into the world straight pool championship this summer in New Jersey.

There are a couple of Jose Garcia 14.1 matches on Accustats. In one he plays Mike Massey and in the other he plays Efren Reyes. The commentators remark about what a nice old style control game he has. Doesn't go into the balls when he doesn't have to. Gets on them right when they go. Nice to watch.

I was fortunate to play several games of straight pool with Johnny Archer in 2004 (I was just a novice at the time...hell, I guess I'm still a novice...).

In retrospect, I think I was overly impressed with his game at that time; I have since gained more of an appreciation for the old-school game. At this time I would say that his game was not truly old-school; but still very good, with an obvious love for the game; and a desire to develop some old-school skills.

Archer as always been one of my favorite players, not sure why exactly though.
No idea what his current high run is.

It's interesting that he practices this way. I've found that when I'm warming up or practicing... if I go into a match after practicing just 8 ball, or just 9 ball... I play mediocre. But if I warm up with a game of 14.1 I play MUCH stronger. At least a full ball increase speed wise.

It's nice to hear they have that much respect for straight pool.

Yeah, in fact, so long as this game of pocket billiards we love is destined to never attract the masses to the point of popularity like bowling or even darts, we might as well at least work on bringing back a real game like 14.1 to the pool players.

That is a huge and excellent point!!!

how would it help you to imitate top players. you do not know how they are aiming their shots.

I KNOW how they aim.

Top players aim SUCCESSFULLY.

So far these same players have not been very forthcoming with the techniques and methods as well mental approach to these same shots to the lower level players.

I would venture to say that probably a 1/3 or more the top players do not know how they do it either. They do not know exactly what happens however they can make it happen.

I say 1/3 or more top players know exactly what happens and they use all technique and method and probably a fair bit of them overlap with their methods. The remaining top players are in between some knowledge and some art.

What I think can be said for all top players
They all have alot of desire.

They all have hit a ton of balls.

They have all been spanked along the way, went home and worked on their problems, built up faith in their new solutions to what let them down and came back and tried it again.

Systems only work if you work the system.

I have played on his GC5 and its the triple nuts, he sets up the break ball in the same spot everytime and starts a run, when he misses he starts his count again. its a tough table, he aint running 400 on it, nobody could. I wont say what his high run is, but i'll share mine-8, yup 8 on his table. which is good for me, i'm am the absolute the worst 14.1 player ever that can play a little. I have broke and ran out a few racks of 9 and 10 ball on that box.

Right now he is playing great, his game has jumped up alot in the past 4-5 months, about the time he got that table, perhaps it was a coincidence. I dont know. What I do know is he is playing as good as ever and I believe that table has helped IMO. He practices 14.1 he says it is better practice for 9 ball than 9 ball-same for 10 ball.

He is geting ready for that pool school tour with him and Earl from what I understand, I realy hope that goes off good for them. Earl is a great teacher too.

> The longest run I've heard of from him was 201,literally 2 weeks after taking the game up thanks to J.R. Calvert and Nick Varner. The 201 came as an extension of the finals, started by Johnny running 149-out. He got to 201 and missed on purpose because the 10-ball portion of the all-around tournament he did this at was behind schedule. I wouldn't be surprised if he had beaten this by now. Tommy D.

Re-open the main page and look at the top part of the screen. There is a link there to the Runoutradio site.

They have 23 episodes or something like that now and they do an excellent job.

Is Johnny's high run supposed to be a secret?

i cant say what it is, I dont have his permission. Its not as high as you would think considering how good he plays. I will ask him later tonight if I can post it.

Hope I didn't come off as a jerk, I just couldn't think of any reason Johnny would worry about anyone knowing what his high run is. Especially on 4 1/4pockets.

When you've won as much as Johnny, Earl, Souqet, Efren,etc...you're WAY beyond having to prove yourself anymore.

I understand you wanting Johnny's ok though.

Johnny and one pocket don't get along too well but maybe we can get him in all round with 8-ball, 9-ball, and 14.1. Perfect match against the Euros who don't play one hole too much either.

he is a private person and I respect his privacy, putting someone elses business in the street is bad biz. Especially since pool is his business. You didnt come off as anything but a cool guy asking a fair question, i have the answere and with permission i will answere it, pubically if possible or private or not at all. He is my friend-not because of pool, hell we never play and dont talk much pool were friends in the purest sence pool is what brought together our girls get along great, i love his kids. I dont run around bragging he is my friend, infact until this post i never really mentioned it, its not a secret. I'm a notiable internet pool guy, he is a internatinal champion, so I keep it low. Infact I asked him it it was cool that I say here he is my friend, he was cool with that because he knows I wont make his private life public. Another reason I dont say much about him is I dont want to seem like a groupie, were friends thats it-pool or no pool. And we awalys laugh our asses off wathing movies, talking shit etc. pool is 10% of what we talk about.

Bud Green, I like your posts and you, your a great guy in my book. I'll ask tonight or tomarrow and see if its cool. you didnt come off like a jerk at all, the oppsite to say the least, but think of it from his perspective, pool is his business and if people know something about you that you dont want to know that can cost you, like trade secrets in other businesses, like Coke Classic-how many people know whats in it? or KFC its a secret. The other side of the coin is John Schmit another cool guy, he uses his high runs to promote his reputation which is cool-two ways of reaching the same end.....a sucessful career.

Stating what a professional players high run anywhere is not "putting someones business in the street" as you say. and as far as mentioning he is your friend, you have done that enough times for me to know it so i think you should face reality on that.
