Archer & Varner Southern Tour first day, getting ready

After what seemed to be the shortest drive we have had in a while we arrived in Nawlins. Went right to get into the hotel and they were not ready for us and so it was gonna be about 30 mins before we could check in. I needed to go and meet the pool room owner & Manager at some point before tonight and since we are only about 4 miles away we went over there for 30 mins and killed some time and got a part of what needed to be done at one time. We meet Jimmy who is a manager at Big Easy and chat about where we will be doing the show tonight and set up etc. They gave me a menu in case we wanted to eat and since I love food and southern food I figured I would take a look but figured it would be the regular bar food. To a certain extent it is but mixed in there they have things like red beans and rice, Andouie *SP, Alligator sausage among other southern specialties and one thats all french and can't spell or pronounce it. I know the last time we were here Nick had had some red beans and rice and talked about it alot and so when I saw that was on the menu I waved Nick over who was talking on the phone. He walked over while still on the phone and I pointed to the menu at Red beans and Rice. He tilted his head a little to read it and then told the persome on the other end of the phone "Oh, Oh ERR I got to to go and call you back later" He hung up and said "I'm in for that" So he got a nice plate of Red beans and Rice along with a sausage and ate just about all of it and he had a healthy portion. to be cont...

So we left and got checked in to the hotel. We are trying to figure out what we are gonna do tomorrow through the day. We have a couple of options on the table and we are a little undecided. Nick wants to go to the French Quarter tonight after the show, I know it will be just partying on Bourbon St tonight at the time we will get there. I am really not that interested in that. Amazing that Nick is all in to it and I am the one who isn't. We will see how Nick feels tonight after the show. I would like to go tomorrow during the day as all the little shops etc will be open and be able to see things in the daylight, We are also considering going to Buffalo's Billiards during the day for a little bit but we are mixed on that. Then of course there is the char broiled oysters and I think we can get those in the French Quarter and kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
So I guess its one of those things that we have to wait and see on as JA wants to go to see the places that Katrina hit.

I am sooo not looking forward to tomorrow night and Wednesday morning. We have the clinic tomorrow from 6pm to 10pm and the chances are we will not be leaving right away and will probably hang around a little and then probably hang out with each other and say our goodbyes so I am not sure what time we will get to bed. Now my flight leaves at 7.20am and as most of you know when traveling with luggage you need to be there at least 90 mins before take off. so I need to be there at 6am. it takes about 15-20 mins to get there so I need to leave the hotel at 5.45am, I am not good at getting up and just running out the door so I need at least an hour which means I need to be up at 4.45am. I know plenty of people do this everyday but I am not looking forward to it. Then I have to travel like 9 hours to get home flight to LA and a 3hr + layover then back to Phoenix. Not complaining but just not looking forward to it. After that all will be good, I get to be with my Jessica and my two great kids and a stepson who is also great and likes to ask ALOT of questions and will want to know about every thing about everywhere and why :) I won't mind at all as it will be just good to be home.

We are gonna have a great night tonight stop by and say hi at Big Easy Starting at 7.30pm.

Not sure if I can get James Walden to play Nick some 9 ball or one pocket but if Nick is interested in playing some even up let me know and I will get a hold of James' stake horse. Wait a minute, James W is fat right now even though he is recovering from a broken arm. He may not need any financial backing.

Let me know. Maybe I can have James ready for when Nick gets back from the French Quarter tonight.

Since he is in such bad shape, lets see about having him come up to Big Easy tomorrow night and maybe??

Well let me start by saying the Red beans and rice at Big Easy are AWESOME! I even have some to go that I will be eating before the night is over. We got to Big Easy Billiards Around 7.10 and the table was set up for us to do the show but only a couple of people sitting at tables around the exhibition table. Although there were alot of people in there playing in foursomes and so I thought we had walked into a dud because nobody seemed to have any interest in the show. As anyone who does these things, Massey, Rossman, Pelinga know it happens and you just got to make the best of it and do the best job you can do. We spoke to the owner Jesse and his Manager Jimmy for a little while and decided to wait 10-15 mins before we started for stragelers to show up and wasn't expecting much. A few people did come in but it wasn't a rush of people. So I tell The owner and manger and JA and Nick "Ok, We are gonna get this going" even though we have a small crown. I get on the mic and begin to do my thing. "Ok ladies and gentlemen we are ready to get this going" All play stopped and every single person sat at the bar, playing on the tables stopped and gathered around and took seats, so now we have a fairly big crown who all took their positions for the show. AH-Ha thats whats going on, they were all killing time til we got there and actually started. JA whispered to me "go figure" We had a fun time and there are some characters at Big Easy Dirty Harry is one one them. He can talk for at least 3 mins without using a period. We got done with a sucessful show and I started talking about food and that got Nick involved and next thing you know they have made us some Allegator sausage. If you have never had it before its kinda spicy, I know not due to the gator but the way they make it. It has a different taste to it and seemed kinda rich to me. JAa and Nick Loved it too and we got a lot of advice as to what to do tomorrow. So we will see. JA and Nicks plan to go to the French Quarter tonight faded away and so tomorrow will be the day I hope.
Sad to say, Lock n Load and JoeyA never showed up to see us, don't know why but I hope all is ok with them. I really would have liked to see them again. Well I guess we missed them this time and maybe next time we will catch them. JA is going to take the van tomorrow til about 11.30am so after that WHOO hOOO ! Nawlins baby! Oysters and Hurricanes in the French Quarter. Really looking forward to it. Just for a couple of hours not an all day thing but will be fun.
Well I have my to go box of red beans and rice I need to go to the lobby to warm up. I thought the Sheaton would have Microwaves in their rooms Ah well no biggie. We are all in a great mood tonight LOve the South even with the fast food F78k ups we have had :)

I am glad you all had a good time without me being there. I had not been to Buffalo Billiards in 2 weeks and was visiting them for a while. I thought you all might come by there. But you did not show. I saw JoeyA and he was busy. I will try to come over to see you guys tonight. How much is it to get in?
I am glad you guys are having a ball. That is the good part of your trip to New Orleans.
Pool players could learn a lot by going to this clinic. Hope to see you tonight!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Hey Mark,
Do not forget that Buffalo Billiards, the world pool hall is open open 24/7, and 365 days a year. Now that is a world class pool hall. So you don't have any excuse to say they were closed or you thought they were closed. Even during the Hurricane they were open with a generator. Now what did you say about Buffalo Billiards being the world pool hall?
Did you tell JA what I offered Buddy Hall last year? He, he, he.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

LOck n Load, I did tell JA what you offered Buddy and he laughed. Tonight is the clinic and I think there is a spot left. The Clinic is $200 per person if you are interested. Please feel free to come by tonight and say hi but yesterday would have been the best day as the guys will be teaching tonight. We had a talk about coming over to Buffalo's and we think it would be a little disrespectful to Jesse at Big Easy Billiards. Like when Buffalo paid to have Buddy and Nick at his place Buddy and Nick did not go and play anywhere else. So the same goes for Jesse, he is paying the bills to have us in New Orleans we would not feel right going to another pool room to play. Just trying to do the right thing, we passed Buffalo's on the way there and back last night. Hope to see you and JoeyA if you make it over.

We must be in the Poolplayers Sheraton, last report I left something out but I just was reminded by something that just happened.
So as I was on my way down to meet the guys in the Lobby I was in the elevator with someone who works at the hotel. He saw my Legends and Champions shirt and asked if I play pool. I told him my usual line "I like to play but I am not very good but I work with a few pro players" The staff member's eyes got bigger and he got an excited tone in his voice and said "Oh man I watch the pros on tv whenever its on and on youtube, I like Allison Fisher and I was just watching Johnny Archer again on tv with the Mosconi Cup. I really like him" I said "I work with him" just as the elevator doors opened and you could see into the lobby and JA and Nick were sat on one of the couches and I said "As a matter of fact hes right there" He was so excited and said "Oh yeah he is right there, WOW this is awesome" he kinda stood at the entrance of the elevator door just staring as I walked toward the guys they got up and we headed out to the show I looked back in and he was still there watching JA leave. Thinking about it now I messed up, I should have brought him over and introduced him to the guys. I guess I was thinking about just getting to the show on time If I see him again I will see what I can do. I told JA as we were getting in the car and Nick piped up "Really? what did he look like?" I told him, black guy with dred locks. Nick said OH, cos a guy came and asked for my autograph when I was waiting for you guys, said he is a poolplayer. So, I needed some coffe this morning and had none in the room so I went to the front desk and there was a guy with a clipboard and I am guessing he is in charge of house keeping. I asked for some coffee and he said "Sure come right this way I can get some already made from the kitchen as they just put it away or would you like some pack for your room?" I tell him pack are fine. and as we walk he asks if I play pool seeing my pool related shirt again. I told him my usual line and he says "Yeah I saw Mr Archer yesterday you must all be together?" I told him we were and that was that but It seems like most people who work here play pool. Maybe the Manager does too and wants to comp our rooms :) Thats all for now I think.

Thanks!

Hi Mark,

My friends and I would like to thank you, Johnny Archer, Nick Varner, and Jesse for giving such a wonderful show last night at the Big Easy.

We play in the local APA league and last night was the first time we have ever met anyone on the level of Nick Varner and Johnny Archer. *We were all excited to be there. *
*
It was a real pleasure watching Nick Varner do a variety of trick shots. Coming in, we all knew Nick Varner to be a World Champion but we didn’t know he’s also a very funny guy, a wonderful showman and just an unbelievably nice down to earth person. * The same could be said of Johnny Archer. They both graciously took the time to sign pool sticks and answered all manner of questions from the crowd.

It was a real treat to be there and we hope to see you guys again in New Orleans.*

Take care,*
Nola

Thank you NOLA, we really enjoyed ourselves too. I love Nawlins. I will probably get the time later to do my finalreport. Thanks again

Well here is the final chapter of the voyage, I last wrote while in Nawlins. This morning I am back at home in Phoenix and everything seems like an anti climax, after always being on the run with somewhere to go or something to do. I Now have to get my head back into staying home and working and not having to look at the clock every few mins.

The final night in New Orleans was just a clinic so no excitement to speak of except for the people taking part in the clinic andc JA and Nick. During the day before the clinic we did all take the opportunity to get together and first of all talk about the tour. Its something we do everytime and we go over what could we have done differently, how can we make it better, what did we do well and what did we do not so good. We have some ideas that we think will make the shows better and a little different and also some preparation on my part that can be done better and also how we can make the clinics different and have more tools to use like a manual that goes along with the clinic and video for stroke analysis. All these are just things for us to work on. Some of them are great ideas but also may not work for wone reason or another so again, we shall see.
We also took the chance to give eachother a hard time about one thing or another and JA got some jabs about his driving and I got some for just being me but JA and I decided that Nick gets away with so much that it was time to lay it on thick. I think I have talked before about Nick and the dissapearing act he tends to do when its time to load and unload the van. This loading and unloading usually happens when we arrive at a new hotel, leave the hotel for the shows, get back to the hotel from the shows, when we get to the pool room, when we leave the pool room. Here is what has to be moved when we arrive at a hotel and leave a hotel when our time is done in that town. 3 large suitcases, 3 overnight sized bags, 5 dealer cases that look like big flat suitcases, 3 boxes of extra cues for the display cases, 2 regular cue cases, few boxes of balls and a box of DVDs. From that point when we get to the pool room its everything but the suitcases. So just to let all of you know, JA and I do not really mind doing the loading and unloading, Nick is the oldest and so out of respect for him we do what ever we have to. The thing is we have talked about it between ourselves that we don't mind but we have never told Nick and so he still tries to find reasons to not be around or have something else to do right at the moment its time to load and unload. It has become a source if entertainment for me and Johnny, laying small bets as to which of his reasons he will use this time to not do the work. Its anything from needing to go and hand the hotel keys back in at the front desk, to checking in, bathroom taking trash out of the van and putting it in a trash can. Here is an example of this. We began the loading process to leave a town, Nick decided since we were already checked out and had nowhere to hide that he was gonna take the trash out of the van. Ok, well I suppose that does need to get done if it gets too bad but we keep it pretty clean. Sh we are loading and JA and I whispered "this is a new one hows he gonna make it last long enough though?" so Nicks head dissapeared into the passenger side along with the top half of his body obviously looking for trash and gathering it together. He is still there when we are half loaded. Wow must be more trash than we thought, every now and then we would see Nicks head peeping over the front seats into the back I am guessing to check on our progress. Nick steps away from the van and heads toward the trash can. JA and I watch him walking with one empty bag of Cheetos. Thats it one empty bag and we just laughed at how long it took but that wasn't the end of it we walks right past the closes t trash can outside the hotel and heads for one thats much further down and if he walked any slower he may have started going backwards. This made JA and I laugh even more that he thinks we don't see what he is doing. So as he gets back we are still sniggering and talking about it, nice says "Whats wroing with you two idiots? We ready to go?" "Yes Nick we are ready to go, Ja says "Did you get all the trash?" we laugh again. Anyway so since we are giving Nick a hard time in the hotel room over this we tell him all the things we have noticed him doing and how he dissapears etc. He starts by giving us a confused look and as we recount the things he has done and the differnt times he has done them he begins to laugh, he starts laughing louder and louder and once you get him laughing its hard to stop him and its really is very fun ny to watch because he tried to talk and he can't get the sentence out cos he is laughing too much. Anyway I said "Its ok Nick we are just giving you a hard time and letting you know we have been on to you for a while. Nick still laughing says "Yeah, I probably deserve it, I don't know what the F&$K I'm gonna do when its time for me to unload this stuff when I am on my own I have gotten so used to avoidinbg it that I might just get out and go stand in the hotel for ten mins and realize its not unloading itself."
After the clinic that night the guys wanted to go out and do something, its something that we try to do on our last night, end of tour Wrap party as often as possible. I could not do it this time as I had to be up VERy early and so we just all settled up what we all owed eachother for one reason or another and I went to bed. Not sure if they stayed up and chatted or went out for a drink or something to eat. As expected I was shattered and exhausted last night after the full day of traveling home and watched the debate and was ready for bed.
My final word is that this tour had its ups and downs, it could have been better but all agree it could have been much worse. So at the end of the day we are all happy and I have to say what and honor and privilage it is to work with these two living legends and am honored to call them my friends. We could not do three week tours together without having that friendship and understanding. Well thats all folks, I will be back reporting when the next tour happens. Thanks to all the people who have been following along with the reports and thanks also to all the people who have send me messages telling me how much they have been enjoying it. Til next time.

Thanks to all the people who have been following along with the reports and thanks also to all the people who have send me messages telling me how much they have been enjoying it. Til next time.

Hey Mark,
I think you and the rest of the gang did a very good job. And I like your reports a lot. You keep us posted very well. I think you do a lot all by yourself too. I apologize for not making it over there to the Big Easy. I hope you, JA, and Nick are not angry at me for not showing up! I had my reasons, but I will keep them to myself.
I enjoyed the idea of knowing you all were in new Orleans. And I hoped you all enjoyed your stay here in our fair city! It was very good to communicate with you also. Any time I can be of help to you just call me. If I think you really need me I will show up. Thanks again, Mark, Johnny, and Nick.
Many Regards,
Lock N load.
